Title: JONES - Corsham
Post by: g1rxr on Monday 16 January 12 01:37 GMT (UK)
Looking for information on the Jones family of Corsham in the mid/late 1880's.
I have them on Census records but no common connections to share data.

Henry Jones birth 1852
William Jones birth 1813
Ralph Jones born 1888 (My grandfather)
Ernest Jones born 1875

and may more.........

The family were Quarrymen.

Goblin Pit and Westwells pit was a common work place for them 1860's to well into the 1900's

Do you any information to help with research.

It's probably to complicated and long winded to post on here.
My grandparents and parents all died either before I was born
or when I was very young.  Now all family relatives are either
dead or on the wrong branch of family.
I first purchased my mother and fathers marriage certificate to make
sure I was dealing with the correct couple.
I then purchased fathers birth certificate to find out grandfathers name.
He was Ralph Jones (shown in OP)  As you can imaging it was
virtually impossible to go any further as I had no knowledge of his birth date.
For years I was unable to pass this brick wall. Then with a splendid bit of
luck I contacted someone about a wrong Ralph Jones.
This lady kindly did a bit of research and found a record of Ralph in the Coldstream
Guards. (My gratitude once again to Sue Waller)   This record linked Corsham
to Surrey (place of marriage) Thus I was able to get back to census searching dates.
Since posting my original message I have noticed the men folk were quarrymen working
at both West Wells Pit and Goblins pit.

My thanks West.

I have the baptism from IGI which only says Corsham. The date is correct and parents correct so it is the same person.
Could I ask how you managed to get a listing of Gastard, Corsham.
Is there any chance that your superior records show which James Jones married which Catherine Shell in BOX on 4th Oct 1808 ?

There are 2 James Jones born Corsham and 2 Catherine Shell born in Box.
There are also two James Jones from Corsham Parish which is the nearest parish to Box. I will list them as they might be of help to you.

27 Mar 1785       James Jones            S        Parents    James and Sarah                       Parish  Corsham.
12 May 1788       James Jones            S        Parents    George and Catherine (Pauper)  Parish  Corsham.

14 Oct 1781        Catharine Shell      BBD     Parents Joice Hancock and T Shell           Parish Box.
3 Aug  1783        Catharine Shell       D        Parents  James and Lucy                        Parish Box.

As you can see either James could have married either Catherine as the dates are all so close.

I Found the following on the Box transcripts. It seems Joice baptised Catherine twice on the same day.

14 Oct 1781  BBD        Catharine Shell           To Joice Hancock & T Shell.
14 Oct 1781  BBD        Catharine Hancock      To Joice Hancock & T Shell.

There are no other Baptisms to Joice Hancock & T Shell.

I hope this info does not make it more confusing.

West.

Many thanks West.
I now think this a brick wall that I will never be able to solve.
Not least the fact that there are 2x Catharine's and 2 x James's

Hello VickyTaylor
In 15 years of researching my Jones ancestors from Corsham area I have never found anyone that actually had family information. You have blown me away with the amount of information in your reply. Most of my records are at our house in France but I have typed a rather long reply until I get over to France in a few weeks time. I will post the reply in the next post in case in the future it may help others. Admin if you feel it is too long please delete it.

sorry, but there were 2 boys who were killed in WW1. just took it for granted that they would be the oldest 2... the person to ask is Rosemary Cainey  wife of James son of Gilbert or Harry   , she lives in Walcot Bath. James did a full and extensive family tree .  Are you descended from James of Anthony  Plymouth???My Grannie was  probably the youngest  child she died in 1971. All the information I got was from Auntie Betty  Edith's daughter, and Auntie Miriam who was Nellies daughter, both have since passed on . I have a cousin  Nicholas Drew  who lives in Plymouth - no , the last time I saw him I was about ten years old- he went into the Navy triedto get in touch in 1971 when our paths crossed , I was married to an Airman and living in Cyprus  and Nicky was on Hms Hermes. But because of my pregnancy they wouldn't let me go out to the ship....He has 2 sisters - one in Falmouth the other in Birkenhead.Beware there are 2 Jones families in Corsham - one in Elley Green and are they related  not sure ....my e- mail address is Vickyetaylor@hotmail.com  you may get in touch with me at any time - don't leave it too long  I am 72years old.....

I think that somewhere in there you will find William Jones married to Elizabeth Herbert, this would account for my grans rhesus negative blood group. there were 3boys who fought in south Africa all of them getting awarded medals etc all Joneses  - blond hair and blue eyes... there is a close connection to the Army, ( I think also Elizabeth Perry  came from Devizes  and then back to Cornwall) George's wife was the cook at the big house in Corsham owned by a Captain Fuller my Auntie Nell also worked there and so did Auntie Eaddy
George and his wife are both buried at the Chapel in Neston they were caretakers there.
Richard Jones is buried in the graveyard attached to the Parish church . He married one of the Chivers girls
think that is the lot for now  hope it is some use to you....
