Hello, I am looking for some advice to a) determine the correct birth date of William Scott and b) determine his parents. This is my 6th generation ancestor and we are stumped. Whilst he lived in Surrey due to work as he was married at Roxburgh/Kelso it is most likely he is from there. Details about him are:

Died – 18 July 1854 in hospital at Frimley,Farnham,Surrey, England
Age –51, he still lived at the Royal Military College Sandhurst.
He was buried in Plot 126 in their Academy’s/College Cemetery.

Mathematics Master later he became a Professor of Mathematics, until his death in 1854.
He and his family lived at the College, at No.4 College Terrace [known locally as Tea Caddy Row] a group of houses built by the College Professors and Masters in 1810.

Norma,
Thank you immensely.
I did a google search on the address and another person, Celia Dickie (?) was born there also in 1820.
I checked on google maps and it is now a hotel - if it was a large building I guess they could apartments - was there any 'social norm' of using a Post Office address as their address during that period?
Thanks again !

Hi Richard,
This looks like him in the Edinburgh Advertiser, April 28 1820, page 6, last column, in which case he did come from Roxburghe:
"List of the names of Gentleman who have gained prizes this Session in the University of Edinburgh"

Brigyn,
Thank you, that makes sense 'a hotel' - any advice on where to from here on trying to define his birthplace? Appears he was born 1806 - it's a very popular name.
Thanks,
Richard

Ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years for people over 15 years on the 1841 census. His age on the 1851 may be the correct age.

I notice from the following that William & Maria were married at Windiwalls, Roxburghshire.

It may give you a clue if you can find out who lived there in 1841. An excellent website for tracing addresses is graham maxwell ancestry but their free census search facility is down at present, however Graham & Emma will do a look up for you by e-mail if you contact them.

Otherwise, looking at the childrens' names, births for William Scott that come up in Roxburghshire that include them are:
1801, William Scott & Elizabeth Henderson, Roberton
1804, William Scott & Margaret Dickson, Melrose
1808, Walter Scott & Mary Young, Roberton
No Ferguses showing on SP!

ps: it's not Kamplings Hotel in Waterloo Place, but RAMPLINGS

Have just found Windywalls in the parish of Sprouston, it was owned by Captain Walker, so not much help in finding William's family there, I'm afraid.

Maria Walker age 20 was living at Windywalls Sprouston Roxburghshire in 1841
Looks like her mother(?) and aunt(?) are also present

Hi,
David & Venuta Walker come up as Maria Agnes Rebecca Walker's parents on IGI parent search (bpt 4 Nov 1818, St Andrew, Jamaica) so I'm guessing that Benvenuta Walker, aged 45 in the 1841 Windywalls census is the same person (Maria's mother).
Mary Walker, aged 35, Independant, looks like the wife, soon to be the widow, of Capt. Robert Walker RN of Windywalls, whose will (23 pages) & testament (3 pages) is listed on SP, dated August 1841.
It also looks as if Benbennta EJ Scott who appears in the 1851 English census is a mis-transcription of her grandmother's name: Benvenuta

William Scott:
Parents: William Scott & Elizabeth Henderson
Birth: 14 Oct 1800 Lillieslief, Roxburgh (IGI)
Baptism: 15/01/1801 SCOTT WILLIAM WILLIAM SCOTT/ELISABETH HENDERSON FR87 M MAXTON/ROXBURGH 798/00 0010 0087 (OPR from Scotland's People, also IGI)
Sibling: James Scott bpt. 28 Apr 1799 Maxton Rox. (IGI)
William Scott biography, see pages 115 – 117:

There is also a baptism for William Scott, 19 Sep 1802, Lillieslief, parents: David Scott & Agnes Oliver. Their other children include James 1804, David 1806 & Margaret 1811. Given the text of the biography, William Scott & Elizabeth Henderson seem the best fit parents for your particular William.
