I have an ancestor who's death certificate indicates they died at Riddens, Dalry. Can anyone tell me where theis was. The family were coal, or iron miners. I live near Dalry but have never heard of this place.

The National Library of Scotland maps website gives you access to old maps of Scotland, including 19th century 6" to the mile ones. It is always worth looking at.

It is briefly mentioned here www.scottish-places.info/parishes/parhistory822.
The parish contains also the villages of Blair Works, Burnside, Den, Drakemyre, and Riddens, with part of Glengarnock.

I have ancestors from there and it is down as riddance/riddens on some of the certificates. I think it a miners row as on one certificate it says Riddance Row, Dalry.

Thank you monical and bigt. I believe it was a miners row. Possible Iron miners. I just wonder where it was.

Hi, I just noticed your chat. I was born in Dalry and my first thought is that there is an area bounding the Blair Estate called Lambridden but then I remembered that there is a street of council houses in the West Kilbride scheme called Reddance Terrace. The local council often named streets after old names for nearby areas so maybe there was a miners' row or other accommodation there where your ancestor died.

Riddance Cottage is approx 650m west of the cemetery at Dalry along the Ardrossan road. Checking out the old OS maps at the NLS shows that the spelling has altered over the years.
The following 6" OS maps show Riddance:-
On the 1856 map the location is unnamed, but an Ironstone pit is shown near the location (https://maps.nls.uk/view/74425799).
The 1895 map shows Riddance Cottage (https://maps.nls.uk/view/75494193)
There is an error on the 1909 map which shows the names of Reddance Cottage and Mount Pleasant having been transposed (https://maps.nls.uk/view/75494190)
The 25"OS maps of 1857, 1896, 1910 and 1938 show the area in greater detail (https://maps.nls.uk/view/74926821), with the 1910 and 1938 maps having the Riddance and Mount Pleasant names transposed.
Its interesting to note the number of bings (spoil heaps) that existed in the area, and that by 1896 the original pit had disappeared. Nowadays not a great deal of the former workings can be seen on aerial photographs.

The builders merchants out the West Kilbride Road is called Reddance, probably the same root for the name and that's up past the cemetery.
And a wave to Marie, I grew up in Dalry too.
