Title: Charles Crossan and Helen Jane Mathieson
Post by: Forfarian on Friday 20 January 12 13:54 GMT (UK)
Charles Crossan, cattle dealer, born Derry City in 1862/3, married Helen or Ellen Jane Mathieson, born Scotland in 1880, in St Mary Chapel, Glasgow, on 8 February 1901. I have seen the marriage certificate. In 1911 they were living in Fahan Street, Londonderry, with Henry, 9, born Glasgow; Charles, 7; Bella, 5; Lena, 3; Annie Josephine, 2; all born Derry City.

Is anyone researching this family? I'd be interested in any information about descendants, and about Charles' parents. I have loads of information about Helen's family.

What are the names of Charles Crossan's father/parents on the marriage certificate? Unfortunately it looks as though he was born just before that start of civil registration in Ireland.

I have conflicting information, which is why I didn't quote it originally. According to the marriage certificate they were Henry Crossan and Louisa Bonar. However in the census his mother is Elizabeth, aged 72, also born Derry City. So I don't know which is right. The family were RC, and spoke English.

According to 1911 census Charles' mother was Elizabeth-

Found this on PRONI website- "Crossan Henry of 94 Bogside Londonderry cattle dealer died 31 October 1925 Administration Londonderry 15 December to Charles Crossan cattle dealer. Effects £394 2s. 6d." Unfortunately no Will but paperwork in PRONI might reveal family details.

Hi,
The IGI, using a Parent Search, shows several children born to Henry Crossan and ELIZA Bonar (spelling varies) in Londonderry between 1864 and 1879.

Hi,
Just noticed another couple having children at the same time, Henry McCROSSAN and Eliza Bonar. They were married on 5 Jul 1859 in Long Tower Roman Catholic Church, Londonderry City.
Cannot find the marriage of the other couple and wondered if the two couples might be the same.

Regards

Looks quite likely. I can just about imagine Charles' Irish voice saying his mother was Eliza and the Glasgow registrar hearing it as Louisa.

Hi, I see 5 children born to Henry (Mc) Crossan and Eliza Bonar births registered at Long Tower RC church, Londonderry

Charles Crossan (1862)
James Crossan   (1864)
Ann Elizabeth McCrossan (1867)
Matilda Crossan (1869)
Henry McCrossan (1871)

Seemed not to matter very much whether or not the 'Mc' was used when registering births
The later 4 births also appear in the Civil records (Londonderry Urban NO1)

Thank you all for information about Charles Crossan's parentage.

Where might I see the original 1862 baptism record?

A transcription of the birth record can be viewed on line at http://derry.rootsireland.ie/

to  view full record costs 5 € I believe (this will be transcription not copy of register)

Hi,
I am Charles & Helen Jane Crossan (Mathieson's) great grand daughter, on my mother's side. I've just started looking into our family tree. At the moment I have only a few details from my Mum about her Uncles and Aunts, Charles' and Helen's children.

Harold  (Harry Died 03.10.1942)
Bridget Crossan (Born 04.06.2011. Died age 76) 1 child
Charles (Charlie) 4 children
William. 1 child
Issabella (Bella). 9 children
Jean McCauley (Jinney) Married James McCauley. 9 children.
Annie Watson (Born 26.05.? Died 19.04.1978) Married Joe Watson. 6 children.
Lena  (Died aged 90) Married Alex McCafferty. 1 child.

I hope this is of interest to you. You mention that you have quite a bit of information about Helen Jane Mathieson. I have found out a little about her and her parents William and Penuel on scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Would you be able to share any other information about them or their family. It would be lovely to find out more.

What is your relationship to Charles and Helen?

I have Isabella Francis Crossen  born 1906 died 1983, married to William McCafferty.  I think her parents possibly are Charles Crossen and Ellen Jane Mathison.  Does anyone have information on this?

Civil birth record below confirms her name as Isabella Frances b. 2 April 1906, daughter of Charles Crossan and Helen Jane Mathison (presumably 'Bella' in the 1911 Ireland census return posted at reply #3):

Is Harry, died 3 October 1942, the son born in Glasgow on 5 April 1902 and registered as Henry after his grandfather? Or was there another son named Harold who died on 3 October 1942 and is buried in Yokohama? And if so, when was he born?

A supplementary question relating to this family. Charles Crossan, 94 Bogside, son of Charles Crossan, dealer, married in Derry in 1935.

Charles Jr was born at 110 Bogside. Several of his sisters were born at 94 Bogside.

In the 1911 census, the family are listed at 94 Fahan Street.

What, if any, is the relationship between Bogside and Fahan Street?

Thank you.

So could 94 Fahan Street and 94 Bogside be the same house?

Their Daughter Isabella Francis Crossen married William McCafferty in Glasgow.  I am working on their grandson Raymond's ancestry.  I am new to Irish research and any help will be appreciated.

I have seen the marriage certificate of Wm McCafferty, aged 43, 2 Donegal Place, Derry, son of James McCafferty, labourer, to Isabella Crossan, aged 28, 94 Bogside Street, Derry, daughter of Charles Crossan, dealer in cattle. They were married by Wm Murphy, CC, in the Roman Catholic Church of Strabane, County Tyrone, on 7 February 1935, and the witnesses were Charlie Crossan and Bridie Crossan.

William McCafferty was born on 22 April 1889 in Port Glasgow, parents James McCafferty, carter, and Mary Ann Breslin, who were married in Strabane on 1 August 1885. In 1901 and 1911 the family were living in Londonderry.

Thank you, Ronan, that is very interesting. I apologise for being slow to responde, but I have been away from home and had missed the e-mail notifying me of your reply.

I would be very interested in anything your aunt would be able to tell me about the Crossan family.

No, I'm afraid I am not in Ireland at all. I'm actually much closer to where Helen Jane Mathieson was born. If you reply to this I can contact you by Personal Message.
