Title: John Lunney b. 1797 Belturbet.
Post by: CaileanMac on Monday 23 January 12 10:46 GMT (UK)
Hi folks, I am looking for any information regarding John Lunney, b. 1797 in Belturbet. He spent 27 years in the 26th Cameronians and was in Gibraltar and India, where all his children were born.  I have a record of him being discharged in India, but nothing after this point. His daughter was born in India but married in Ireland before moving to Scotland.

I know his wife was called Mary but I have no idea where they were married or what her maiden name was.

Sorry, I'm going to shamelessly bump this in the hope that someone might know some more information. The info I have is:

John Lunney or Lunny
Born: 1797 Belturbet, Cavan, Ireland.
Married: unknown date to Mary, surname unknown.
Died: unknown.

Occupation: Soldier 26th Cameronians. 1813-1827 served in Gibraltar, Ireland and England. 1828-1837 served in India. Discharged in 1838 and known to have returned to Gravesend in 1838. No further information from that point.

Children:

Catherine Lunney, born 1827 in Dublin. Died in 1828 in Madras, India.
Eleanor Lunney, born 1829 in Madras, India.
Catherine Caroline Lunney, born 1830 in Chinsurah, India.
Sarah Lunney, born 1834 in Meerut, India.
James Lunney, born 1836 in Ghazipur, India.
John Lunney, born 1837 in Fort William, India.

His daughter Mary Lunney, who was born in 1832 in Meerut, India was my 3x Great Grandmother. She married a James Irwin or Irvine in 1854 in Killesher, Fermanagh and emigrated to Scotland in 1865. She died at High Craighall Rd in Glasgow in 1908.

Is anyone connected to this particular family? Or has further information?

It's been three years so time for another shameless bump.

I have updated information regarding John Lunney, I now know that he died on the 14th of January 1868 at the County Infirmary of Enniskillen. He died after a hernia operation. This injury may have been related to his military service some thirty years previously, as he was discharged due to a 'rupture' and was thus unable to march.

I'm still looking to make a connection with anyone related to this family.

Any deaths in Scotland should give both parents names (with mother's maiden name) on their children's deaths if the informant knew those details.

At least one of John Lunney's children did die in Scotland (my 3xGrt-Gran). Unfortunately the mother's name is given as "Mary Lunney, maiden name ---------". The informant was John Lunney's granddaughter.

I can't seem any immediate family connection to anyone of that name... so I'm at a bit of a loss.

Yes got his service record already thanks, and some pension records.

Sadly no mention of extended family in those records.
