Title: JOHN & ANN (nee Card) ROOTS FAMILY
Post by: cattao on Sunday 29 January 12 05:16 GMT (UK)
Looking for Mary Roots born c. 1814 (died in Australia 1892 aged 78, wife of Charles Cook) Parents John Roots and Ann (nee Card).
Familysearch showing me possibly 2 entries for children of John and Ann

1. Penelope 1814, Martin, James, William and John. (Mother Ann Card.) Speldhurst Kent
2  Mary, 1814, Lucy Maria, Richard, William, George. (Mother Ann)
Bidborough Kent.  Villages very close to each other.
Can anyone advise which could be the right one?

Who did she marry?

Maybe we can check census information, which would give her place of birth.

All the Martha Roots in 1851 are already married!

John ROOTS Married Ann CARD, 19 Feb 1814, Tonbridge, Kent

The Baptism of PENELOPE Roots took place 07 Dec 1814, St Mary the Virgin, Chatham, Kent
Parents JOHN/ANN
Fathers Occp Shipwright
Another Child with same Parents, Fathers Occp;
ANN 19 March 1813

So this one mayvbe is not the JOHN/ANN you are looking for as the Child Ann above and others were born before the 1814 Marriage quoted of John Roots/Ann Card.

The other Ann is possibly nee WOLFINTON, married to John 06 Aug 1804, Cobham.

To to me the Bidborough Christening looks more likely for your Mary Roots.

When and where did your Mary Roots and Charles Cook Marry?
Was it post 1841?
I have found a John Roots, Farmer, with a Daug Mary in 1841 Census.

Trish :)

Thanks folks for all the info. The Marriage was terrific, I had the reg no.and did think about getting the Cert, but as I can see saved some money as there isn't a place of birth.  His death index in Victoria states, father Charles, mother Elizabeth and we've applied for this which may give birth place (hopefully).
Charles and Mary should just make the 1841 census - I'm wondering with that Star Street address if they might be there then?? the only way to isolate if there are many Charles and Mary Cook.

They emigrated to Australia 1849 so not around for the 1851 census.
re CARD/ROOTS
I've been in touch with a man in Utah who has put his work into Familysearch (he is a Card descendant) & this is where I got the 2 entries for Ann from, but it doesn't seem to fall into place easily.
If anyone could check the 1841 census for me for Charles & Mary Cook and also Charles & Elizabeth parents of (Charles). Doesn't help when the names are the same does it???

The shipping list for the "Whitby" June 1849 lists:

Charles COOK tailor 33 b.London, Middlesex
Mary 35 b.Kent
Mary A 7 b.Kent
Charles Hy 5 b.Kent
John Jas. 2 b.Kent

Mary Ann COOK dau of Charles and Mary, tailor of 95 Star Street baptised 3 Oct 1841 Paddington Green St Mary (born 5 Sep 1841

Charles Henry Herbert son of Charles and Mary COOK, tailor of St George's Terrace baptised 24 Dec 1843 St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey

John James COOK son of  Charles and Mary, tailor of 6 Westbourne Place baptised 12 Sep 1847 Paddington St John, Middlesex (born 9 Jul 1847)

It would appear that the 1841 census returns for Paddington do not survive ............ typical when we have an almost certain address for them ::)

Sorry I should have noted the Source;
London, England, Marriages/Banns, 1754-1921 on Anc..

I also tried to track the Witnesses on the 1841 Census with no luck. And have just starting looking for Georgina Roots who may be a Sister of Mary.
If I find anything I will post it here later.

Trish :)

Marriage;
10 March 1850, St Pancras Parish Chapel
Georgiana ROOTS, Full Age, Spinster, Residence Watford, Herts (Hertfordshire), Father JOHN Roots, Occp Butcher
Joseph Newman LEACH, Full Age, Bachelor, Occp Miller, Residence St Pancras, Father JAMES Miller, Occp Miller
Witnesses are hard to read, John Voice?/Mary Bond?

1851 Census
Watford, Hertfordshire
HO107/1714/325/8
Joseph Newman LEACH, 32, Head, Mar, Miller, born Watford, Herts
Georgiana Leach, 32, Wife, Mar, born Brighton, Sussex
James Leach, 2mths, Son, born Watford, Herts

1861 it looks like Son James has died and by 1871 Georgiana is Widowed also. She is still around in 1891 Census, a Widow living on own means.
1871 she has a Charles H H SOOK, age 27, Birth c 18444, Nephew, born Kentish Town, Middlesex, living with her.
She gives, Langstone, Essex, as her POB in 1871!

OH could Charles H H be a COOK, as image is hard to read.

Could Charles Hy COOK, age 5, from Passenger List Casalguidi quoted, and Chrsistening she found as Charles Henry Herbert Cook, have gone back to England ???
Looks to me that he did!

I had trouble reading Charles's Occp in 1871. I think it says "Under Headmaster at St Johns College, Cambridge"

Familysearch.Org has a Georgiana ROOTS Christened 18 Aug 1816, Laughton, Sussex to JOHN/ANN

Someone has a Tree for Charles, Dr Charles Henry Herbert Cook, birth 30 Sept 1843, Death 21/5/1910, New Zealand.
Has a Photo but no Parents for him.
Married Emily Denman.
Son Charles Frederick Denman Cook of Marton, Wanganui, NZ died 1918 in Hampshire. There is a 1920 Probate for him in London.

All of this is interesting but does not help with the original enguiry much sorry!
I cant find Georgiana in 1841 pre Marriage.

Charles Henry Herbert COOK
It says "Under Graduate".  The Cambridge University Alumni gives his date of birth as 30 Sep 1843 Southwark (baptised 24 Dec).  First son of Charles COOK, gent, of Melbourne.  Professor of mathematics at Canterbury College, New Zealand 1874-1907.  Died New Zealand May 1910 (Marton, Rangitikei, New Zealand).

Catteo, does the death certificate for Mary COOK nee ROOTS give her mother as Ann CARD?

It's hard to decide where she was actually born when the births of the children in the shipping list were given as Kent when they weren't actually born here and whether Kentish Town (Paddington) has any significance given that it is mentioned as Charles H H COOK's place of birth in the 1871 census :-\

Thank you everyone for your great help.  I have passed all this on tomy friend and he has worked out just how it all fits in - he is another Charles Cook!!! - so many of them.  He's justreceived the death cert of Charles (who emigrated in 1849) and it says his place of birth is London!!!  So chances of finding anymore is probably a tad hard with that name.
Yes he did return to England and that is where he met Emily.
re Mary Roots, the Victorian Indexes show Mary's mother as Ann Card, we don't have her death cert.

Trish you say  'someone has a tree for Charles' where is that - on Familysearch or Ancestry  we may be able to chase this up and pass on info, it might be a NZ connection.
Thanks again everyone.
