Title: Eastwood family - travellers, Kent, 1860's
Post by: ladynicotine on Wednesday 01 February 12 13:45 GMT (UK)
Hi

I'm trying to trace information about my ancestors the Eastwood's of Kent/Sussex.  My gt gt gt grandparents were John & Ann Eastwood, married c1860.  John's parents were John & Harriet.  Thanks to searching this site & reading some posts by Kuri I've discovered that John seniors parents were William & Philadelphia.  I'm trying to find details of the marriage between John & Ann (according to the 1911 census they'd been married about 50 years, which puts the marriage around 1860).  Their first daughter Phoebe (later Wingrove) was also born in 1860.

I'm also trying to find both John senior & family & John junior & family in the 1861 census.

John & Ann's daughter Caroline (born 1867) "married out" to a fishmonger in Dartford (Alfred Slater), & I'm descended from her.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi

I do have a tree on A* - Coles family tree.  Don't yet have any dates for William & Philadelphia.  The earliest birth dates I have are for John Eastwood senior & Harriet.  My screen name on A* is ladynicotine, same as here.

Any help you could give would be much appreciated.

Sorry, have just noticed the "reply 3 times" thing.  This is what you get for checking on the sly at work ;)

I've discovered a bit more about William & Philadelphia, but just one or two dates, & I'd need to confirm them from another source.  It's where both John senior & John junior & families got to in 1861 I'm really puzzled about at the moment...

hi ladyn - think i put 3 times because you posted on beginners - but actually you have posted 16 times so no problem.

Hvae you got access to the 'breeds' tree on A* - put in Phoebes details and then scroll to trees. if not then PM me .

unfortunatly the 1861 census is the only one missing in osurces given - seems noone else can find them either.  probably mistranscribed ('Heastwood -1871!) they were in kent for 1851 /1871.

I could be - where have you found them living?  The John & Ann I'm tracing were in the Dartford area, but John's roots go back to Burwash in sussex.  Mind you, James was also an Eastwood family name, & they were fairly prolific!  I've got notes of an James Eastwood born 1811 & another in 1855.  One site I've found helpful is http://www.thesussexweald.org/home.asp, which lists (among other things) various geneologies.

Good luck, & let me know if I can be of any more help.

Hi Romany

Thanks for this.  First William is almost certainly "mine" - brother to my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather John.  I would suspect that the other William & the George are related somehow, but given how prolific they seem to have been, it's going to get a bit complicated working out exactly how!.

Again, the Phoebe is probably connected somewhere, as it seems to be a family name.  I know for certain though that "my" Phoebe, born 1860 (or end of 1859) married a chap called William Wingrove in 1878.

All useful though.

Hi
Not sure if this is of any help, but I have Eastwoods on my tree and they "married' into the Breeds family. Well they didn't excactly "marry' but had several children!
My Gt Grandmother Alvina Eastwood  [born 1851 in Brastead Kent] had children with John Breeds born in 1851.

Her father was John Eastwood born in 1816 in Burwash Sussex. He married a Harriett Jennings.

John's father was William Eastwood born 1772 also in Burwash, and his wife was Philadelphia Hawkins.  Hope this of help to someone, Cheers Kuri  ;D

Hi Kuri

Sounds like we're kind-of related then!  Your Gt Gt parents (John Eastwood/Harriett Jennings) are my Gt Gt Gt grandparents (am descended from their son John, born 1821).  ;D

Do you have any information about Harriett Jennings?

Hi Lady nicotine,

I should have put that John was my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather also. I really do not know anything about Harriett. It is John's daughter Alvina [who was my Gt Gt grandmother] I am decended from.
Nice to know I have found some I am related to. Cheers Kuri  :D

Thanks for this - I think George is the brother of the chap I'm tracking, but it's all useful information.  They may have been in the same area.

Hi Kuri

Thanks for this - I'll head over & check it  out.  Given I live in the North East it's very difficult for me to access archives in the Kent area, so I'm having to do nearly all my research on line & rely & double & triple checking everything.

Hi,
John Breeds b. 1851(husband of Alvina Eastwood) was the nephew of my 3rd. g. grandfather John Breeds, b. 1801 at Tenterden Kent.

My John Breeds married Ann Farndell at Ewhurst Sussex in 1820.

Ann Farndell attended the death of Patience Farndell at Tenterden Kent in 1842.
Patience was a "Hawker of Goods"....she was 77 years old at time of death,
therefore born c. 1765.

Patience Farndell married Richard EASTWOOD at Ebony Kent.

Patience had a son Richard Farndell at Windlesham Surrey in 1788.
I believe he is the same man who used the name Richard "Isted" when he married Ann Fuller at Salehurst Sussex
in 1808. They had 3 children born at Ewhurst, Sussex with the name Isted.
This Richard "Isted" was "of Tenterden" at the time of his marriage.

12th Oct. 1794, at Sandhurst (near Etchingham) Kent, William Eastwood was baptised......son of Patience "Furnell" and Richard Eastwood.......I have not found any trace of this William Eastwood since his baptism.

My Ann Farndell has reported that she was born c. 1806 at Robertsbridge Sussex but there is no such record.

Two more relevant baptisms:
Mary ISTED bpt 10 Dec 1797 Lamberhurst KEN
Ann ISTED 28 Apr 1801 Herstmonceux SSX

An Isted researcher told me that the above Mary and Ann were children of
Patience and Richard ISTED who were TRAVELLERS......this according to the
baptism records.

Ann "Isted" b. 1801 at Herstmonceux, could possibly be my Ann Farndell
but I have no proof.

I am told by two different sources, one a Breeds and one an Eastwood, that the Eastwoods used the alias "Histed" and variations, at one time.

Mrs. Ann Breeds (nee Farndell) witnessed the marriage of
John HAWKINS and Charlotte Ansell at Tenterden 25 March 1828
my notes from parish registers indicate John Hawkins was a Traveller.

Ann Breeds also attended the marriage of Robert Farndell to Maria Russell
at Tenterden 18th March 1828......I believe Robert was Ann's brother.
Shortly after this marriage a Removal Order was issued to Robert and Maria,
sending them to Salehurst, Sussex.....Robert is shown as Robert Farndell
alias "Hysted" on the Removal Order.

I need help in finding more information on this Richard Eastwood
as I believe he was my 4th g. grandfather.

Patience Farndell's approx. year of birth 1765 gives an indication
of when Richard was born......I haven't found a birth or a death
or any census record for him.

I wonder if John Hawkins was related to Philadelphia Hawkins who
married William Eastwood.....and is "my" Richard related to William.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Foxglove.

Sorry, forgot to include marriage details for Richard Eastwood,
sent to me by a cousin in the UK, from the KFHS cd's :

Ebony marriage banns 1823 Richard Eastwood ba Ebony  Patience FARNDELL
(no parish given for Patience)

Farndell is extremely uncommon in Kent, so I am positive she was my
Patience who was born c. 1765.

Hi Foxglove

I don't have my records to hand, so I'll have to take this home & do some digging around it to see if I've got anything that links up.  The Eastwoods seem to have been fairly prolific, so "your" Richard & "my" William may be cousins or something, but I'll see if I can find anything for you.

Hi Foxglove

I don't seem to have "your" Richard in my tree I'm afraid, & the only listings I've seen would be for the wrong generation.  I did find some useful information on the following website, which might give you additional avenues to try:

http://www.mandywillard.co.uk/surnames/eastwood/william_1714.htm

If you've not already done so, it's worth looking on IGI as well.  I've found a few useful leads there.  The real problem of course is that being travellars they didn't always register things officially.  And they did like keeping names in the family ???

Hope this helps.

In reply to an old post from Lady Nicotine.

My mother's side of the family are Hackers (not computer hackers) and in 1911 Mum's father is on the census as living in Dartford with Alfred and Caroline Slater and their son Jack. He was sent to them as his mother had died in 1910 and Alfred is his uncle.

My family had heard of the marriage of Alfred and I'm not sure if it wasn't a bit sensational then and it has become romanticised since. Do you know any more about the Slaters family rumours are that he did well for himself and was something of a 'big wig' in Dartford.

I know it was ages ago that you posted but anything you know would be welcome and likewise anything I can offer on the in-laws you are welcome to.
