Title: Logie
Post by: rebelrouser on Friday 03 February 12 10:28 GMT (UK)
G'day Chatters,

I am hoping to obtain information on the LOGIE family of Westray and Papa Westray.

In particular with a James LOGIE who was born in 1824 to the parents of William and Mary nee BREMNER.

This James LOGIE came to Australia prior to 1848 and his Port of arrival is believed to be Port Adelaide.

Regards
Wal rr

Many thanks akc for the information.

I did have all the children which you have now confirmed, thanks.

The information in relation to cemetery inscription was fantastic.

Would you have access to the various census 1841 to and including the 1871 census, offline if necessary.

Is it just me or do the dates not add up?
Mary Bremner/Logie died 1847 age 71 , so Birth c 1776
I doubt that she would still be having Children in 1841.
Shouldnt she be age 51ish?

And the William Logie died 1879 age 84 would be born c 1795.

1841 Census (under LOGUIE)
Farwald, Westray
Orkney and Shetland, Scotland
William LOGIE, 45, Farmer
Mary, 45
Isabella, 20
George, 20
JAMES, 15
Thomas, 14
William, 4
Mary, 10

1851 Census
Farrafield
Westray and Papa Westray,
Orkney, Scotland
William LOGIE, 55, Head, Mar, Farmer of 16 Acres employing 3 Labs, born North Row Adbury, Orkney
Margaret, 45, Wife, Mar, Farmers Wife, born North Row Adbury
Isabella, 33, Daug, Farmers Daug, born North Row
Thomas, 23, Son, Sailor, born North Row
Seater, 18, Son, Scholar, born North Row
William, 13, Son, Scholar, born Westray
Mary, 10, Daug, Scholar, born Westray
George SEATER, 4, Grandson, born Westray

Looks like William remarried.
William LOGIE Married Margaret LOGIE, 14 July 1849, Westray and Papa Westray, Orkney, Scotland.

ah the plot thickens!! i did wonder about the age difference on the m.i inscription, it would make her 20 years older than him, orkney family history society, site has been out of action for a couple of days and i took the inscription out of my westray mi book, but on checking on the ofhs site they have the same inscription so would probably need to find her death cert to check

on cursiter.com website: mary bremner born 1796 westray to george bremner and isabel seatter. sounds a more likely birthdate and these names would fit in with their children, so the mi inscription must be wrong or possibly not easily read?

So interested that you answer on this and have also referred to my late father's book I helped him with 'Emigration of Seatters and Rendalls 1961-1925' (from Westray and Papwestray to New Zealand) with family trees including my direct ancestors:
John Seator b.1773 Westray who married Sybilla Logie b.1773 Westray
My father has the generation before as:
James Setter Westray m. Barbra Setter, but not dates and details.  I wonder if you have any?

kindest regards
hundland

Not sure if this is still active thread but if so, I do have pictures of:
James Logie (postmaster of Pierowall) and Wife Ann Balfour Logie (nee Hewison)
and others.
One picture I have is titled Grand uncle James Logie, Grand Aunt Ann Balfour Hewison, James Harcus, Neeny Maam, George Rendall and Mrs Rendall circa 1906-1907

My grandfather John Stewart Hewison was born Oct 13, 1896 in Westray to Timothy Harcus (?) Hewison and Elizabeth Walls of Westray.

The Hewison's are descended from the Westray Dons. I remember my grandmother - the above mentioned Milly - talking very fondly of the Logies and the Drevers.

I'm fairly new to Rootschat so not sure yet about appropriateness of posting pictures or what rules might be aside for ensuring not posting pictures of living persons.

If anyone interested in pictures just let me know
