Hi All.
Could some kind person please lookup the 1871 Dumfries census for a Chalmers Mclachlan who was born 1864/65 in Dumfries. I am hoping to find out any imformation on the other members of the household, with whom he was living with at the time. Any help will be really appreciated.

Hi gnu.
Many thanks for your quick reply.
So they were living with their grandparents, I was hoping to find them with their parents William and Agnes (nee Burgess) who married in June 1861 at Dumfries, who I have not been able to find on any census after their marriage. Once again many thanks.
Dave.

Hi Dave
What age was William and where was he born? I'll have a look for them.*
I'm interested in your Agnes Burgess - she could be related to mine (Agnes was a family name) but would have to check.
gnu
* found him with family in 1861 aged 19 (circa 1842)

Hi
I'm not sure if you've seen this but it's Chalmer's death cert:
26 April 1885, Morton
Chalmers McLachlan, pauper, formerly tailor, aged 19. Single
3 Townhead Street, Thornhill
Parents - William McLachlan, slater, deceased and Agnes, m.s. Burgess
Cause - Phthisis Polmonalis. 9 mths. Cert Thomas Davidson, M.B. Thornhill
Informant - Alex Hewison, Inspector of the Poor of Morton.
So William was dead by 1885.

I'm having probs finding Agnes after Chalmers' birth.
Is this her in 1861?
23 St Michael Street, Dumfries
Janet Paterson Gillespie, unm, 82, Clergyman's daughter, b. Kells, KKD
Francis, sister, unm, 69, -do- , -do-
Agnes Burgess, servant, 21, b. Dumfries Burgh
(Mr Gillespie, their father, baptised my 2 x great grandmother, Jean Burgess, in Kells :))
If it is Agnes, I've trace her back to the 1841.

Hi gnu.
I have Agnes on the1841 census living with her mother Agnes Burgess born 1799 and sister Isabella born 1824 and brothers James born 1834 and John born 1836 all in Dumfries Dumfrieshire. Agnes Burgess (nee Hogg) their mother is my GGG/Grandmother who married William Burgess about 1818. I cannot find my GGG/Grandmother on any later census, and I am trying to find out what became of her. Seeing William passed away in 1866 it is possible that she remarried, I cannot seem to find a death for a Agnes Burgess that fits.
Many Thanks.
Dave.

Hi Dave
I think I found the same family.
I've tried many different ways to find Agnes - a second marriage, a death, censuses, etc. but so far nothing is coming up. I've not checked whether she went to England or emigrated.

Hi gnu.
Thanks for your help with this post.
I have just done a free search for a Agnes Burgess born 1798 or 1840 living in Dumfries on the 1851 census, and it came up with a Agness Burges born 1795 and a Agness Burges born 1840. I think that this could well be my GGG/Grandmother and her daughter with their names incorrectly transcribed. Could I possibly ask you if you could check this out.
Regards Dave.

I think that was one of the ones that I looked at:
1851
King Street, Dumfries
John Milligan, 33, Carter
Mary, wife, 33, housekeeper
George, Ronals (?), orphan, 6
Agness Burgess, m-in-l, wid, 56, pauper
Agness Burgess, daughter (presume of Agness), 11, pauper, scholar
All b. Dumfries

Hi gnu.
I am fairly sure that this is my GGG/Grandmother.
On the 1841 census Agnes was living with her children but there was no husband William so I assume that he had died before 1841, I had no record of a daughter Mary as she was not with the family on the 1841 census and if the age given on the 1851 census for Mary is correct then she must have been the first child to William and Agnes after their marriage in 1818. I will have to try to find a birth and marriage for a Mary Burgess with parents William and Agnes to comfirm.
Many Thanks
Dave.

Hi gnu.
Many thanks for all your help.
I now believe that I have found the deaths for my GGG/Grandparents William and Agnes Burgess. There is a death in Dumfries for a William Burgess in 1841 and a death for a Agnes Burgess in 1866 in Dumfries. I did a free search on S.P and these seem to be the most likely ones.
Regards Dave.

Hi
Yes, I saw the 1866 death and wondered because it was in the Dumfries Poor House and the 1841 did describe her as a pauper, aged 70. Unfortunately, no details of her parents are given.
How sad some of these discoveries are :-\
I've still not found the younger Agnes.

PS - I've found this link very useful for D & G relatives:

Re my PS in the last posting.
I've found this in the Dumfries Kirk Sessions Records:

On the same page is my 4 x great uncle, Thomas Burgess. He had married Agnes by then but obviously she had had a child within 9 mths of the marriage!

Did you find the baptism of Mary Burgess ?
1st August 1818, Dumfries
Mary Burgess Parents - William Burgess and Agnes Hogg

Hi gnu.
Yes I did find the baptism for Mary Burgess on IGI and thanks for the links. Do you know what an irregular marriage means I have never come accross this before.
Thanks Dave.

Hi Dave
Marriage laws and customs were different in Scotland than in Eng & Wales. An irregular marriage was broadly one that wasn't performed by a Church of Scotland minister and no banns were proclaimed. This link might explain it:
