I'm presuming you have access to FindMyPast?
If so there are a number of parishes of interest that are not on there, in particular the Chapel at Trelystan (only at Shropshire Archives). Also near by are Churchstoke and Hyssington. There are also gaps for Shropshire in the IGI, Rattlinghope & Melverley in particular in that area.
You should check these. They are all only available at Shropshire Archives, except Rattlinghope, BTs for which are at Hereford.
Also could be that the marriage wasn't recorded, is some distance away, transcribed wrong etc.
-
Hello David64 Thank you for responding.
Access to FindMyPast? Find My Past not sure.
Spend too much time in Shropshire archives and I think I have exhausted all the records in the different parishs. Have worked on all Hughes's on Western Salop.
Trelystan Parish or chapel is not earlier enough for my marriages.
Not on IGI or Boyd's.
From red book of Mont. marriages at Aber. I have 2 possibles but another trip back to Aber I think.
John Hughes m Jana Maurice 30 June 1726 Llanrhaiadr
John Hughes m Jane Hughes 16 May 1735 Llanfyllin
David also feel I need to look at Bishop's transcripts. Especially for Buttington Parish. Hughes's of Hope.
-
FindMyPast has transcriptions of the majority of Montgomeryshire parish records to at least 1837, including Buttington. They include BTs, though I am unsure if all BTs have been used or just ones to fill in the gaps. I have a feeling it may be the latter.
Regarding Trelystan, I'm not sure how far back the original registers go, but the Bishop's Transcripts go back to 1638 then 1660. There is also the issue of the chapel of Penrhos in Llandrinio. I'm not sure if there are BTs for this and I think there are quite a few gaps.
Some mar.s from Trelystan:
Edward Hughs m 26 Jun 1729 Beatrix Hughs
Richard Pursel m by banns 14 Jan 1730/1 Anna Hughs
Have you checked the register for Ratlinghope? Originals are lost, but there is a transcript from BTs at Shropshire Archives.
-
You obviously no this area of research very well.
It seems I will have to do work on Bishop's transcripts.
Ratlinghope have not researched for Hughes but for other lines of my family, could be worth a try. Although I think my earliest Hughes's are in the Buttington and Hope area. Have also researched Hughes's in the Welshpool Parish transcripts at Salop archives.

Hi I was wondering if you have this family in your tree?
Mary Rogers married John Hughes 14th
May 1829 at All Saints,
Buttington
Mary & John
had four children, Thomas 1831
who became a wool
manufacturer in
Montgomeryshire; William
1833; John 1836 who also
became a wool manufacturer in
partnership with his brother
Thomas, and Maurice, 1840who became a school
inspector and married Mary Lloyd from Worthen
in Shropshire. Alas, no children seem to have been
born to this couple.
Thomas and John appear not to have married,
but were successful wool manufacturers. As for
William, he seems to have vanished in records
-
Hello Floozy
John Hughes married Mary Rogers on 14th May 1829 Buttington.
It is possible this John Hughes could be the son of William Hughes and Sarah Davies who married on 28th August 1781 Buttington.
I would have to look at the original record to prove a link.
I think the Rogers family have connections to Guilsfield Parish.
I obtained similar information you supplied, from a gentleman in Melbourne, Australia.
-
Hi,
that could have been a cuzz of mine Graham??
Here is a roots chat link from my other thread
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,606546.0.html
Would that make us distant distant distant cousins??
Not sure about the Guilsfield parish though. Alot came from around Forden and Buttington.
I already have links to Mary Rogers she is in our Rogers famil for sure.
many thanks Floozy

I want to enquire about the ROGERS family who are included in this post. John Hughes, son of John Hughes & Mary ROGERS was married twice. First to Elizabeth Jones & they had a son named John born in 1872 & Elizabeth died in 1875 aged 26. He then married Mary Jane [nee Beattie] Lewis whose first husband had also died. She was daughter of William Beattie & his wife Elizabeth Newill who lived in Welshpool. She had been married to Pryce Lewis a cabinet maker in Welshpool & had 3 daughters, who had all left home by the time she married John Hughes. Incidentally, [for Floozy's info] Emily one of her daughters emigrated to Melbourne, Australia & married there twice & I have researched her to her present day family & written an article on her sometime ago for the Montgomeryshire & the Shropshire Family History Society. She & John Hughes had 2 children, Alice Mary born 1879 & William Thomas born 1882, both in Welshpool. Mary Jane died in 1883 aged 44 & John died in 1887 aged 51, this is why the children were living with their uncle Thomas Hughes who was John's brother. They are buried in Christ Church cemetery in Welshpool & their grave reads, " In memory of John Hughes [flannel manufacturer] who died Aug 15th 1887 aged 51 years. Also Elizabeth wife of the above who died Feb 25th 1875 aged 26 years & was interred in St Mary's Churchyard. In memory of Mary Jane wife of John Hughes who died Oct 20th 1883 aged 44 years."
My interest now is searching for the parents & other ancestors of Mary ROGERS 1808/1870 who married John Hughes in 1829 in Buttington. I believe her parents were John ROGERS & Elizabeth [possibly Humphreys born 1773?]who married in 1797 in Welshpool. I found 4 children William born 1798, John born 1801, Elizabeth born 1805 & the said Mary born 1808, all in Buttington, although I think they lived in Cletterwood. Now this is where I'm stuck, who were John's parents?? Has anyone researched this family back from John & Elizabeth???
Hoping to hear from someone with some ideas, please.
Amberly.
-
amberly that is very informative.
I think it would be worthwhile starting a thread on the Rogers family of Buttington or Welshpool.
Perhaps cut and paste the information you have provided above.
I could not find the census returns from familysearch for your John & Mary Hughes.

-
Thanks for your prompt reply. I'll certainly move it to Rogers Family, but I have to go out now & have no time.
However I want to say you gave the incorrect Mary Rogers! She was Mary Rogers bap 3 Apr 1808 to John & Elizabeth at All Saints, Buttington. Easy to make a mistake with so many M R's around.
Until later,
Amberly.
-
Have to get back to you later on this. Have not been researching much in the last year.
For any Rogers decendants who are following this post, my mother passed way last year.
Joan Edith Reed Nee Rogers. 29th July 1915
her brother William Percy Rogers died two days later 31st July 2015.

-
Hi Floozy/Susan,
I'm not researching the Rogers anymore, they turned out to be the wrong branch, however thought you might have been interested in all my info on John Hughes & his 2 marriages, since his 2nd wife was my rellie & I had researched her family quite thoroughly.

Think we'll call it quits then on the Hughes family.
Many thanks again,
