Title: VANSCHAGEN Luton 1841/1851
Post by: Pat236 on Friday 13 May 05 22:09 BST (UK)
This is my first posting to your list and was wondering if some kind sole
could look up 1841/1851 Census for the VANSCHAGEN family. I have only just
come across this family in my tree and have them in 1861 as
GEORGE FRANCIS ISAAC PAUL VANSCHAGEN born 1818 St Pancras, London - married
to Martha BATES nee (Fensom) born abt 1809 - Luton
Children
Charles born 1849 - Luton
In 1871 Charles had married Sarah (born Luton) and had a son Henry born 1869
Luton.
As this is an unusual name any information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Patricia

Hi Suzanne
We must have a connection somewhere. I am researching all Vanschagen's and have quite a few in my tree. I start with George as you can see from previous e-mails. Charles Edward his son had nine children all born Luton one of his daughters Mary Ann married a Robert Cox in 1896 and then left him for George Williams and had a daughter Agnes Gertrude Cox who is my family line.
Would you like to share your parents and grandparents names and dates and see if we connect.
Would love to here from you.

Have another look on the free BMD...some of this family have their name spelt without the 'c' in the middle... :D

Charles Marsham VANSHAGEN b 1845 [Luton]
Herbert Smith VANSHAGEN married 1894 [Luton]
Sarah VANSHAGEN married 1896 [Luton]

There was also a Charlotte VANSHAGEN who died in 1841 over in Ware district [of Hertfordshire]

Thank you Cathy
Don't know about the Charles Marsham but had the two marriages.
I think the Charlotte who died in 1841 is the wife of Issaic Paul. Will search the Ware District.

It is an unusual name but it seems to be spelt a number of ways!

Three more are I can see - from Holborn & Luton are:

VANSCHAGN
VANKAGEN
VANKEGAN

There is a reference to a marriage of John VAN SCHAGENs marriage in 1753 in the Norfolk Archives and a reference to his business partner 'John CROUCH of Amsterdam' too [please see the A2A catalogue on-line]

I have tried a number of spellings of that name but cant seem to find any of that family who fought in the First WW which indicates how rare the name is

I know this thread started nearly 5 years ago but  I also have these people on my family tree, so if Patricia "pat236" is still around or contactable I'd like to swap information.

Hi, I'm in a genealogy group and the tutor suggested I go on this website. I see you have been searching for Vanschagen, which is my maiden name, having lived in Luton almost all my life! I have been researching my family line for a couple of years, so may have some information you might find useful. I have reached 'dead ends' on a few names so maybe comparing notes might be beneficial, if that's ok with you? I can't back any further than George Francis Isaac Paul Vanschagen (DOB:1818) and wondered if you had? Have you found the family source from the Netherlands?!

Would be interested to hear from you.

Best wishes, Shirley.

Dear All,

I have got back to George Francis Issac Paul in 1818 and cannot pick up a trace of his birth certificate/parents and therefore reached an impasse. I've had no luck with the Norfolk Archives - when I do a search there is no trace of a Vanschagen. Any help gratefully received.

My mother's maiden name is Vanschagen and she has lived in Luton all her life.
