Title: Groat
Post by: bapkas on Thursday 09 February 12 23:42 GMT (UK)
 Hi all
can anyone help me please. i have been searching for my 3xg grandfather
George Groat  b 1793 Cannisbay, hje was a ships master lived in pultenny town wick .
he married janet hunter in 1816 wick.
icannot find a death for him, i have searched scotlands people no luck i e mailed them and they did a search for a death record no luck there, last year i went to Wick and had the same
problem i could not get any info apart for the death of his wife janet . i could't even buy a death cert for her. i had travelled from yorkshire just hoping i might find something.
On Georges daughter's marriage cert 1855 wick his name is on the cert the daughter my gg gran janet groat married john rosie,
i am guessing he could have died after 1855. i found on 1841 janet with her family but no george,
                             any help i would appreciate.
                                           barbara.

If George is on the 1855 marriage certificate as being alive (i.e. it does not say "deceased" after his name), then he must have died away from Scotland or perhaps been lost at sea.

What I would suggest is:

- Does the family have a gravestone which mentions him?
- Is there a will for him?
- Check the on-line catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland
- Find the first reference to his wife as a widow (in a census, for example)
- Is there a newspaper report of his death overseas?

Graham.

Hi George
On the marriage cert it does not say he's deceased. also his wife janet died c 1848.
i searched three cemetaries in wick .the groundsmen were very good they checked the old book's and they couldn't find him.    i did find his son george groat a boat carpenter .  but not the father,
i will look into the info you sent me thank's for that.
                          regard's
                                          Barbara.

There's a site called Am Baile which gives access to indices for some of the northern newspapers. It may be of use.

Hi Barbara,
there is a headstone for Janet Hunter and one for George Groat in the churchyard graveyard in Wick, unfortunately there is no year of death on George's stone.     I had a quick look on the Am Baile northern newspaper site,  there is an anouncement of a marriage 30.3.1855 of your John Rosie & Janet daughter of Geo Groat seaman at Pulteneytown.   and another 22.12.1859 Robert Anderson fisherman Sarclet to Anne (possibly sister of Janet?) dau of the LATE Mr George Groat  Mariner.  so George appears to have died 1855-1859.
It may be worth your while getting in touch with Caithness Archive Centre in Wick Library as George was a mariner, I think they have records of boat owners, crews etc.
On Caithness.Org there is a genealogy forum where you may get help from someone researching the same family.

Kris.

i will give it another try.
                   Kind Regard's

Have you seen this discussion on TalkingScot - http://www.talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17508 ?  Looks like it could be your George Groat, dates fitting with the discussion here etc.  If he really was lost at sea, this is probably as good as you are going to get. Sometimes families did add details of those lost at sea but not in this case it would seem.

There's a report in the Caledonian Mercury 12 Feb 1856 of three vessels going missing. It reported

"The third sloop is the Breeze of Dundee..... Her crew consisted of George Groat, Master, belonging to Pulteneytown...."

The report mentions its is more than 3 months since the Breeze went missing

A similar report appeared in Dundee, Perth and Cupar Advertiser 15 Feb 1856 - the source was the Northern Ensign.

There's an earlier report in the John o'Groats Journal 18 Jan 1856

Hi, link I gave earlier quotes at length from the article in Caledonian Mercury, derived from the Northern Ensign.

You should be able to order a copy of the John O'Groats Journall article of 18 Jan 1856 mentioned by Hanes Teulu through the Am Baile website: http://www.ambaile.org.uk (http://www.ambaile.org.uk)  (go to Newspaper Indexes section and search for George Groat - site seems to be down this morning or I would have given the exact link). The article will probably take several weeks to arrive, by email.
