Hello,
I am trying to find out what my great great grandparents family were doing in Victoria between their arrival in 1863 aboard "Golden South' and the death of Thomas in 1893 and Jane in 1901.
When they first came they went to Ballarat as tailor/dressmaker/milliner - - - when Thomas's father Samuel died in 1873, Thomas gave his address as Hotham, Melbourne, on the death certificate.
My great grandmother was married in Melbourne and her address in 1873 was Hotham.
I have most of the families dates and the newspaper announcements - but am looking for other things about them - afraid I don't know how to go about it in an orderly way.
I've been looking in Trove newspapers but at the time the DUNNINGS lived in Melbourne, there was a touring theatre company run by AT and JF Dunning - I can find 4 million ads for them (OK slight exaggeration- but only slight ::) ;D) They are not part of the family I want! ;)
I'd love to know how to narrow the search and how to find out where they lived. And anything else about them actually - or were they just citizens who kept their heads down and their minds on work and family?
Found a couple of Ads for them seeking workers when they lived in Ballarat. Possibly one in Melbourne - but not sure where they lived so. Was Fitzroy part of Hotham . . . ?? Also there seem to be quite a few Dunnings around who aren't related.
Wiggy :) :)

Hi Wiggy,
A few possibilities.
1865-1866, Ballarat & Ballarat East Directory.
Dunning Thomas, tailor, Sturt St.
1884 Melbourne Sands Directory.
Dunning Thomas, 100 Leicester St, Carl.
1888 Wise Victorian Directory.
Dunning Thomas, sawmills, Ballmatum.
Dunning Thomas, sawmills, Shean's Creek.
Regards
Gerry

Sands and McDougall
1870, 1875.1880 No Thomas DUNNING
Hotham is now North Melbourne. I actually have an old map but can't for the the life of me, find it.
Do you have any street addresses? I could look those up to see who was listed at the addresses.
As you are probably aware not everyone was listed in these directories.
Cheers
Cando

There are a few DUNNING's on the Wills index....John F DUNNING, agent lived at Fitzroy

Gerry,
The Dunnings did have a wood business I believe - it is still in Kew and we don't know if it is part of our family or not - should call in and ask shouldn't we!! - don't know if the people at Ballmattum and Sheans Creek (or Skeans creek?)would be ours though - Unless Thomas was putting up the money for his sons (don't think so :-\) - Our Thomas was a tailor.
There was a John F Dunning - but he went to QLD - I don't know if he came back - more likely the one in Fitzroy is the J F Dunning who was part of the Theatre Co certainly there are many references to AT and JF Dunning Theatre people. Think that will might belong to him. Fitzroy did come up in Ads about him.
I like the 100 Leicester street address - that's him I'd say Gerry. Thanks.
Address on death certificate is 198 Leicester Street , Smith ward, City of Melbourne, County of Bourke. His son James was listed as Richmond Terrace, Richmond when he notified Thomas's death.
On Jane's death certificate her address is 6 Kinkora Road City of Hawthorn county of Bourke. She must have been living with her daughter, Rebecca Brown/Crees, or right by her.
Cando,
- no Dunnings in those years - odd but they were definitely there somewhere - Thanks for the searching. I'll try to Google Sands and McDougall, or do you need to own the book?
Thanks for your help folks! ;)

I have all of the available CD's. Well have a look. Bit pushed for time today.
Cando
-
No hurry - they aren't rushing off! ;D ;D
Thanks Cando. Hope you have enough of the wet stuff up your way, but not too much!
I have previously Googled Kinkora Road on Street map, and I believe the original house is still standing - though you can't see much - just a whole lot of chimneys and a roof behind a high fence. but the roof and chimneys makes me think the house is pretty old.

Interesting that there was a J Crees (butcher) in Sturt St Ballarat in 1865-66 the same time as Thomas Dunning.

Gerry,
- great - thanks for those - reckon I can say with almost certainty that the last four are mine - don't think the first couple are though - they may belong to the theatre family!
James in Richmond Terrace is definitely ours as is T Dunning J & Co., and I think the elizabeth Street one will be also. Odd though - all the same year. Several shops?
Just found a terrace of houses in Leicester Street North Melbourne next door to where the Dunnings would have lived - and built around the same time I'm thinking. Their address is all modern now.
There are also a famiies of Frederick Grigg and Thomas Gilbert, James Grigg, and possibly Edward Alfred and William Dunnings- Have to check the deaths of the last two!
Wiggy
-
Ahh - remember the Crees in Qld? ;) ;) ;D
Well this is their son, Charles Percival Dunning Crees who came and married his cousin Gertrude Amelia, then her widowed sister Rebecca, daughter of Jane and Thomas Dunning! Jane, his mother in law, died in his house!
John Crees Butcher in Ballarat is his father. ;) ::) ::) ::) ;D John Crees is also the one who went to QLD and squatted!

Back after storm has passed ;)
-
Wiggy,
Do you want the 1861 England Census info for Thomas & Jane Dunning?
Gerry
-
Got it thanks Gerry! ;) and the 1851 and 1841! :D
-
Please would someone remind this slow coach how to get back into the Victorian BDM after an initial search.
- I look for one person, they can't find him. I clear the decks then put in another with the same surname and it tells me I've already made this search - which I haven't - (I was told once - but, botheration - I've forgotten!! :-\ :-[ :-[)
I am looking for the marriage and death of William and Edward Albert Dunning of this same Dunning family. William born 1865 and E A born 1867. Both are still alive when Jane died in 1901.
I can't find any marriage before 1910 for William - then it tells me I've already searched when I look for a death or marriage for either him or Edward.
They may have left the state - I don't know!
Wiggy - frustrated! ::)

Dee,
thank you so much, How do I get Vic BDM to let me look these things up without them locking me out.
Not that I am extremely happy that you have found all this - do you have these CDs too?? saved me a lot of 99ces!! I hope you haven't been spending yours.
-
What a lot of male Dunnings running around for me to look for and rule in/out when searching.
I really must call in at the wood yard in Kew and see if it is connected to our family , or to the other family of sawmillers Gerry found yesterday!!
Thank you very much for all this - think an evening with the electoral rolls is in order!!
Wiggy :D
-
Wiggy.....never spend 99 cents per pop.
Just ask....there's lots of us can help you. ;)
Dee :)
-
Umm dare I ask for more?? Just read your last post - thanks Dee.
I don't know if James married - but given that he wasn't living at home I suppose he did!! Born1861 Honiton, Devon.
Also Frederick Grigg Dunning is buried in the same grave as Mum and Dad - does that suggest not married to you?
Born 1850 Honiton Devon, Died 1903.
If you haven't run out of ergs, Dee please would you have a look for these two also? Or I will have another go - I put in the correct parameters for those other two marriages you know - but because I'd looked for deaths before I couldn't get back to look for marriages.
Wiggy not frustrated any more!! ;D
-
Just had visitors, Wiggy....now they've gone so I'll get back to looking.

Getting close to home now - living just down the road from us!!
Thanks Dee! Well now there's Frances Dunning born 1851, Honiton, Devon- I have tried the BDM again - just to see if they would let me in again - but they said I'd already looked - again - which I hadn't - again!!
I'm going off to Trove to see if I can find a marriage! ;)
By the way - if there is someone else requiring your eyes - please give up on this!! I am very grateful!

Wiggy,
To 1888 there are marriages for 7 Dunnings where it states born Devonshire and two that say born England. There are others that give places or counties that don’t look like they are yours. And there’s a heap where birthplace isn’t stated.
I’ll list them for you tomorrow.
Dee :)
-
Beg you pardon Dee
Been back searching for where I got the female Frances from - the birth record looks like Frances but the ship manifest says Francis and so does the 1861 census - so I've been wrong all this time. We'll go with Francis and take this as his death notice in the paper with a wife and couple of children - well well well - common law wife maybe as you can't find a marriage.
- or was that because I sent you off on the wrong track with a female? Sorry :-[
-
I'll check again when I've woken up properly, Wiggy! ;)

Something else for you to check Wiggy.....Guy William Grigg DUNNING has a digitised record on the NAA. It gives his wife as Vera.
Dee :)
-
I'll do that - thanks Dee - found it - interesting - quite old when he signed on wasn't he at 39.
Interesting - I've just found Frederick Grigg Dunning's death notice - he died at the home of his sister Mrs Beenie in 1903 - I wondered why he was buried in the family grave with Mum and Dad. I wonder where his family were - nicked off interstate?? - divorced?? Maybe that's why there was only one son - who'd died before Fred. Will have a look for her under her own name instead of associated with Fred.
Well there is a Clara Downing living alone in North Carlton in 1903. not so far off in sound is it. Hmmmm I wonder . . . She is still there on her own in Farraday Street - Laundress - doesn't sound right though - unless her family have 'caste her off'! This was the family who had a bit of money . . . ! Dunnings I mean!
Another thing - been looking at the Electoral Rolls - Frank Grigg Dunning and Andrew Dunning are together on the electoral Roll in 1903 - no sign of Mary - Can't find Mary's death notice in the paper - so I wonder if she'd nicked off too? I looked but women were on the rolls in Victoria so . . . .
As for looking for Frederick Dunning on the rolls - forget it - everyone named Dunning had a son named Fred + another name - and there were lots and lots of Dunnings (some saying copy to NZ or UK or . . . . )
-
Just had a look at Clara Dunning's Death record- short version!
- interesting that her father's name is given not her husband's - though father had died well before her husband - so it looks as if there had been a rift there. Don't think I will bother getting the certificate itself - she's fairly far removed - but interesting!
-
forget all that about Clara Downing - she is still alive and laundering in 1914 - Clara Dunning died in 1909! :-[
Wiggy
-
;D ;D ;D
You've got a lot to sort, Wiggy! ;)
No Dunning Divorces in the Index to 1900 in Victoria.
Dee :)
-
reckon she just nicked off!! or maybe she was sick :-\ ::)
-
Wiggy, I presume you have the baptism of Thomas Dunning?
Dee :)
-
as in Thomas who came out from Devon - well I have the Devon read out of the record - I actually find them better than just the birth lists in UK - but I don't have the original church record.
Why do you ask Dee? Or are you talking about the Thomas George, son of Frederick Grigg, Born 1876 in Carlton.
I don't have his birth certificate.
- it is only now that I've been going sideways in this family - my line is through Rebecca Jane Scott Dunning. I started just following the direct line back - then since hitting brick walls everywhere, I've started trying to find out more about their families and lives here in Australia.
Wiggy
-
Have I got it right....Thomas who came out is the son of Samuel and Susan?
Samuel was a tailor?
If I have, you have what I have. ;D
Dee :)
-
Thomas, son of Samuel both were tailors - correct. Did reasonably well with that family in UK - got back three more generations - rather too many Samuels and Susans for comfort in that mob! not to mention the recurring marriages with Clapps in different generations!
-
Dee,
Next time you have the time and the inclination, please would you look for the marriage of Thomas/Tom Gilbert Dunning to Jane Bryce. Tom born 1859 Devon and died 1937 Victoria. I knew he was there but assumed he was a bachelor as I'd not found anything about him before
Wonder how slipped through your most efficient net!
I've just stumbled over his death and his whole family. They had four children I believe - Gilbert James, Archie Allan, Gertrude Amelia and Bryce Frederick. Bryce, at least, was married to Muriel . . . and they had a daughter.
Wiggy ;)
If I don't report back it is 'cos I have to go out to a meeting!

Ooohh Gerry
- I didn't see all that extra stuff you'd added - thanks for that! Very helpful!
I think I have found a memorial for Mrs Francis Grigg Dunning - i.e. Mary Barrie - but no death notice! the Bereavement card was in march 1923. I wonder - seems to fit - but no names are given so difficult to tell - . . . .

Wiggy, I've forgotten....
Were any of your Dunnings who went to Queensland at Kilcoy? ???
Dee :)
-
I think they were near Mackay, Dee - is that near Kilkoy?
I was thinking I'd better chase them too - though they are a further generation back and related less closely - same as the Crees and Spillers actually!!
Gerry - do you reckon those are all the same Tom Dunning - I wonder if he was an estate agent - time for the Electoral Rolls again! Having stuck in the same house for 30 years, I can't imagine moving as often as that!!! Bet they didn't have as much junk as I do!!

There's a collection in the Queensland Library called
Collection reference: 6199 Dunning Photograph Albums
Dee :)
-
When I try that link, I get a session time out warning - why is that??
Photos - oohh goody!!! ;D ;D Is it available for me to access - or have you special privileges?? ;)
Well well I found Willie's death notice yesterday in the Melbourne paper - didn't notice if it said he died in QLD - but I think I would have surely!! going back to look! I have SO MANY newspaper clippings to file into the right families now!!
-
OK....try this link. If it works click on the photo to see a larger one.

Willie may only have been on a visit to family up there.
Dee :)
-
Good picture of the garage - thanks Dee. No photo of Willie and Minnie though :-\ Well it didn't say who was in the photo - but William was a photographer - out on a photographic expedition to QLD
That link also said research data no longer available - (apart from the one photo of the garage)
There is a problem - if they are supposed to be in that photo, William had been dead a year. I haven't got any of John Francis Dunning's children - maybe he had a Willie as well. But not a wife named Minnie! ::) Or am I not seeing something here! ???
Went through QLD library, and did find the photos of old QLD places - very interesting!
-
Wiggy, something went wrong with that link too....so
So go to
http://www.pictureaustralia.org/apps/pictureaustralia
put in Dunning.
Photo of Willie and Minnie is on Page 13.
It looks like a wedding photo sent to family in Queensland and out in the photo album that has been scanned by the Queensland Library.
If you still can't find it, I'll get it to you another way.
I'd also like a list of all Samuel's children that you know about. There's a Charles who died in Queensland before 1888, father Samuel.
Dee :)
-
Article in Trove shows that Charles Dunning wasn't one of yours. ;)
Dee :)
-
Thanks I'll try that - meantime here are Samuel's children. ( Sam arrived in Aus in 1859 aboard Wellesley. Emma Came two years earlier with Susan Crees and family.)
Charlotte 1824 haven't tabbed her yet
Susan Mrs John Crees 1824 - 1899 twin?
Samuel 1827 - 1914 (Married Susan Skinner 1822-1900) Have these two in all censuses up to 1891
Thomas 1830- 1893 (mine) married Jane Grigg
Emma Ruth 1838 - 1893 Mrs John Spiller
Amelia Lavinia 1842 - 1861
John Francis - 1844 sighted in QLD.
I know Samuel stayed in UK - have his death and that of his wife over there. I haven't found any children for them!
-
Brilliant - did you notice on page 8 there was one of a Frank Dunning - but I suspect it was in Tasmania! :-\.
-
Yes.....I suspect that too.
On John Francis Dunning sighted in Queensland....that was the Probate advertisement in 1873. Well, I cannot find a death registration for him. Frustrating!
No sign of Charlotte In Queensland and so far I haven't spotted her in Victoria. She certainly didn't marry before 1888.
Dee :)
-
Oh oh, Wiggie.....look what I just found....
Thomas William DUNNING married Minnie ROSE in 1902 in Queensland.
Ref =1902/C239
I wonder if Thomas William was known as Willie?
Dee :-\ :(
-
OH heck!!!! ::) ;D
I wonder - 'cos mine married Minnie Murphy didn't he!! And he died in Vic - 'cos you found his death here.
But mine was a photographer - and John Francis was his uncle . . . . I can just see it!
"Minnie dear, Lets take a trip up to QLD for some snaps - lots of interesting pictures to be had up there - and we can stay with Uncle John and visit the rellies while we're away! And we only have Harold Valentine to take with us!"
[/s]
I wonder if John F had a wife and family up there. Next assignment!! ;)
I was just thinking - I could get the photo dated - but they were probably the same generation so that won't help much!! more thinking - that photo is too recent for my William and Minnie - that's the early 1900s big wide brimmed hat brigade - so another generation - Mine were married in 1887
this photo is Spot on for a 1902 wedding I think!

I can't find any records for John Francis in Queensland....only thing I've found is that Trove snippet. ??? :-\
There's no marriage for him in Victoria either.
He's a mystery man!
I was thinking more that Willie sent the photo to Susan or Emma Ruth! ;)
Dee :)
-
Like your thinking - but time frame is wrong!
Pretty sure about that. :D
-
been on a big search for John Francis Dunning in Victoria - can't find him - maybe it was just him in QLD - no family! He died in 1873 or thereabouts in QLD so . . . . . he wasn't very old - only 29ish. Can't even find a death notice in the paper in QLD for him.
There sure are lots of Dunnings around the place - common that's what! ;)
-
Just found his death, Wiggy.....he died in Sydney in 1872, which fits with the 1873 probate notice in the paper. Have a look at the NSW Deaths Index.
Dee :D :D :D

what can I say - you are all brilliant!!
Thank you so much everyone, you've excelled, and I reckon this family is just about tabbed now!
I am very grateful and quite over the moon really! I've actually managed to chase them forward a bit further with the assistance of names to work with.
I think I'll close this thread now - I haven't seen anything much other than family notices while going through the papers - some ads but I think they kept their heads down most of the time. ;)
Once again many thanks for your time and interest. :)
Wiggy :D :D
-
Don't close it just yet, Wiggy....I'm on the search for Charlotte b 1824.
Can I ask if you have her on the 1841 Census? ???
Dee :)
-
Just one more thing - Merlin - some of those names are ringing bells - specially Stanley N and Minnie - but i think we found there was another Minnie in QLD. Can't remember if I found Stanley Norman - no, I found Norman Stanley - some confusion there - but he was there with all the right people around him so . . . .
I'm on the wrong computer so will have to look in the morning.
Dee I won't close just yet.
Charlotte is the older sister of Thomas - I'm just looking at the census!
Wiggy
-
No I don't have her on the census - not only that but :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ I can't remember how I originally found her
- she may be a figment of my imagination - :-[ :-[ :-[ I'm looking again.
Wiggy ::) :-\
-
Found her - daughter of Samuel and Susan Dunning of Combreraleigh - father tailor. b 1824 27 Dec.
There is another Charlotte daughter of Charles and Susan of Comberaleigh also 1824 - 29 Feb Her father is also a tailor.
No wonder there is confusion!
Can't find a death - though there is one for a Charlotte Downing, in Plymouth, 5b 175, in 1854 what do you think.
She's have been old enough to be out on her own by 1841 wouldn't she.
-
I can't find her in 1841. :-\
She's baptised at Combe Raleigh, Honiton, Devon in 1824. (Family living at Combrawleigh)
But.....I'm tracking Charlotte DUNNING born Combrawleigh c1824 on the 1851, and not on the 1861, and there's a marriage of a Charlotte DUNNING in the Jun Qtr of 1851 in the Taunton District, and there's the burial of a 6 year old Charlotte DUNNING in 1830 at Combe Raleigh, Honiton, Devon.
There is another Charlotte daughter of Charles and Susan of Comberaleigh also 1824 - 29 Feb Her father is also a tailor.
So one of the Charlotte's died but which one? We need to find Charles and family in 1841.
I'll continue to work on it. ;)
Dee :)
-
No Charlotte with Charles and Susannah in 1841 either, so that doesn't help! :-\
-
I've been looking at the census forms for both with no luck .
At least you've found Charles and Susan in 1841 - I haven't even managed that - I have now!
Found Samuel too - but no Charlotte with either of them as you say.
Funny thing I have the census forms links on my tree - I find the Dunnings that way - but not by searching anew - I wonder why that happens - does if happen to others as well?? ::)
