Hi David,
I’ve also got Murtha, as Murty Fennelly in my tree . I’ve got him marrying a Mary Ann Bergin on Dec 1st 1820 at Clough, Ballacolla and going to have my Great Great Grandad Martin October 25th 1829, at Bushfield, Agabahoe. In other peoples trees they have him re marrying a Mary Leonard and then going on to have Murtha , mentioned above in the graveyard in Abbeyleix. I wonder if anyone has any information regarding the two marriages or if I’ve got something wrong. Look forward to hearing from you,
Karen x

Hi KG,
Thankyou so much for your reply. It’s that Murthers father that I’m curious about. As David mentioned Murthers parents were Ben and Bridget and the Murther you and David refer to is his son but I have the same Murther (son of Ben and Bridget ) as my GGGGrandfather but his wife a Mary Ann Bergin the mother of my GGGrandfather Martin. Murthers mother is Mary Leonard , so two marriages. The time line fits and I’ve seen Mary Leonard and their children listed in a few trees , I just can’t find any proof, I’d love both families to be linked in this way and would maybe prove some of my DNA links x

Death 1922 at the County Hospital, Abbeyleix.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1922/05063/4387680.pdf

The 1908 State Pension law was passed in August 1908 and the first pensions paid on 1 January 1909 to around 500,000 people aged 70 or more.

The introduction of the State Pension is why many peoples ages are incorrect on the 1911 Census of Ireland where people upped their age in the hope of getting a pension a few years early.

In order to establish a person's age, a search of the 1841 and 1851 census was necessary.

Hi Feno, thank you so much for your reply. So do I presume that were related ?? Murtha 1792 was my GGG Grandad and his son Martin was my GG Grandad. When I visited this summer I met Fennellys who we’re related back to this Murtha but via Mary Leonard, not Mary Ann Bergin which is my root and I so wanted there to be a connection although I’d seen other people list the two marriages I couldn’t find proof. I found a marriage record for a Mary Leonard marrying a Micheal Fennelly . But i’ll happily take your word for it . I think I saw Murthas grave ,whilst I was looking for my relatives grave in Abbeyleix as the man I met it was his relatives grave . And by doesn’t he seem canny, clever man, get what you can that’s what I say. Thanks again Karen x

Indeed, the transcriber on the 1911 census has typed it as New Ross Street when it was clearly New Row 'Street' (see reply #8 and underneath attachment).

On the OSi National Townland and Historical Map Viewer.
(click 'Accept' and 'OK'. Click 'X' in the black band. Then select MapGenie 25 Inch [1887-1913] in Basemap Gallery) where it's definitely New Row.

So….. the two brothers I met in Abbeyleix, whom I was hoping that I  have a dna link to were related to Murtha 2 , but then obviously Murtha 1 . Their grand parents were Thomas and Kate , so share grand parents with you Feno. One of the brothers houses he said was built on the site of his Grandma ( Kate) old house, up the Ballyroan road . They said how the Grandma had brought the children upon her own after Grandads death. So if Murtha 1 did marry twice then we all share Murtha 1 but then come from the two lines of his children with different wives x

I don’t sorry and I only know a little about Martin, that he was born in Bushfield Oct 25th 1829, was married to Mary Quinn in Abbeyleix Nov 25th 1856 and died there May 7th 1899. They had John, Patrick, Margaret, Mary, William and my GGrandad Michael. I met the lovely Sacristan at Abbeyleix church and she went through the Baptismal records with me, the ladies in Parish records office were very helpful too. My Great Grandad Michael went on to marry Ellen Brennan from Ballinakill where they then lived and had their children including my Granadad Edward.

So …. I’ve seen a few people posting that Murtha 1 married twice but the people I contacted didn’t reply. I’ve got him bapatised as Murty and can find marriage records for him marrying Mary Ann Bergin in Clough , Ballacolla on Dec 1st 1820.  I don’t have a death record for her though so can’t fit the dates to see if she dies before Murtha could re marry Mary Leonard.
When I was trying to find a second marriage record however I could only find a record of a Mary Leonard marrying I think a Michael Fennelly , which seems a little strange.
My GGrandad Michael ( Murty &Marys son) married Ellen Brennan who was from Ballinakill , they ended up living in  Drimaterril in a house opposite Ballinakill GAA. Their son Edward my Grandad after marrying my Grandma Mary Dunne from Monesterverin lived in a house on the Square but moved to England about 1950.
My grandads brother and sister Jack (John) and Madge ( Margaret) both continued to live in the Drimaterril house until they died mid 1980s .
Karen.

I’ve seen lovely pictures of her in peoples trees and Thomas, and wondered if the Brennans were also related …ha!!! I think my GGrandma Ellen Brennans parents lived on Church St Ballinakill .
They both started to appear very familiar though I have to say 😆.

The death registration for Kate Fennelly clearly shows the date as 26 May 1953 NOT 1954 as you keep posting.

This topic has been edited to remove a number of posts which were repeated quotes of previous messages.  It had become confusing - probably unintentionally - and was causing a bit of upset all round.  Hopefully it all still makes sense and no information has been lost.

Wishing everyone a Happy and peaceful New Year - and happy ancestor hunting.

Nell
