Title: How do I find out who Michael Feehan's parents were??
Post by: littlemissx77 on Saturday 18 February 12 09:44 GMT (UK)
Hoping someone can point me in the right direction pls....i'm trying to find out who Michael Feehans parents were. He was born around 1840 and according to 1901 census he was born in Queens county. However at some point he moved to Dublin (Terenure) where he married Elizabeth Blayney and then Mary Byrne when Elizabeth died. There are some Feehans living in Queen county on 1901/1911 census but i dont know how they are related or if they are even related. Really hope someone can help.
Thanks

Do you have a marriage record for Michael ?

Depending on the date and type of record (i.e. civil or parish) it may mention his father's name...

all depends on the date and location of the marriage ..

can you post some 1901/1911 census details for your Feehans - i.e. locations, ages etc ..

The 1911 return is particularly useful as it includes number of years married

Is this your Michael in Connelly's Cottages with his 2nd wife ?

found a baptism of a son of Michael and his 1st wife :

  Baptism of Josephus Feehan - 22 Oct 1875 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/6d0e1b0072899)
  Parish : St. Joseph (RC)

The address is given as Roundtown Quarries - Roundtown is the old name for Terenure.

couple more children from the first marriage (all St. Joseph's RC)

  Baptism of Elizabetha Feehan - 31 Jul 1870 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/c3a5640072516)
  Baptism of Joaness Feehan - 5 May 1872 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/0b9ebd0072638)
  Baptism of Michael Feehan - 11 Jun 1873 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/3270150072721)

and a child of of 2nd marriage :

Baptism of Therea Anna Feehan - 3 Jul 1881 (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/4364360073329)

there could be other children between Michael and Theresa , but it gives a date range for the second marriage between 1873 and 1881 - so there should be a Civil marriage record on the BMD Index.

For some reason i cannot save the census form to my laptop in order to upload it on here but this is the link for 1901 census for Michael Feehan and his 2nd wife living in Dublin. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003709380/
He does not appear on 1911 census, he was possibly dead.
Here are the Feehans that i found living in Queens county.

one step at a time...

To start you need one, or both, of Michael's marriages, to see what details these records have - that's why I did the search for children to try to narrow down the dates a little. A Civil marriage, i.e. after 1864, will show his father's name and occupation and could help confirm, or rule out, any possible baptisms you find later. A marriage record may include other useful details such as a relation or sibling as witness, and if the marriage took place in certain Dublin parishes it may include details of both his parents.

An RC baptism record will generally show both parents full names.

two questions :

do you have details and dates for any other of the children (either marriage) ?

do you have any idea where in Co. Laois Michael came from ?

Not all parishes have records back to 1840 so knowing the location might be vital. Details of Michael's father might help find him on Griffiths Valuation, which might give a location or two to focus the search..

here's a possible marriage cross-match from the BMD Index for Michael's 2nd marriage - with Mary's surname slightly mistranscribed :

  Name: Michael Feehan
  Registration district:   Dublin South
  Event type: Marriage
  Quarter and year: Apr-Jun 1878
  Volume: 2 / Page: 579

  Mary Bryne
  [same references as Michael]

couple more children from the 1st marriage from extracted civil records :

  Philip Feehan / 01 Feb 1864 / Castletown District / Ref. 361
  Patrick Feehan / 09 Oct 1865 / Rathfarnham district / Ref. 719
  Charles Feehan / 27 Nov 1867 / Rathfarnham district  / Ref. 698
  Joseph Feehan / 21 Oct 1875 / Dublin

The first record listed has Elizabeth's surname as Bleany - and is in Queens County/Co. Laois, so it appears that's where Michael's first marriage took place. Since Philip's birth is listed the year that civil records commenced it's possible that there were other children before him.. so the first marriage could be a few years earlier.

See : link (https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Afeehan~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Ablayney~&collection_id=1584963)  (Familysearch)

p.s. Castletown sub-district is part of the registration district of Abbeyleix.

Here are the full BMD Index references for the birth of that child near Abbeyleix - there could be useful clues on the record, such as a more detailed location, Michael's occupation etc...

  Name: Philip Feehan
  Registration district: Abbeyleix
  Event type: Birth
  Year: 1864
  Volume: 3 / Page: 361

For others, here's his second marriage to Mary Byrne in 1878. His father Philip Feehan, a labourer.

Clennonpritchard will have to make a couple more posts to be able to use the private message option to exchange personal information. Clennon could post names of Michael's parents to answer the original question.

Hi thank you so much, yes i have his parents names, i also found that one of his childrens godparent is a Mary Byrne and think now it may be the same woman he married as his second wife, id love to email when i can and find out more as you are years ahead of me, I have questions about Elizabeth Blayneys grave, i found it very odd that she was put in an unmarked Grave in a Church of Ireland Cemetery, i would have assumed she would be buried in a Catholic graveyard. I also cant find her daughter Elizabeth Feehans grave, she would be my gr gr grandmother
