Title: Catherine Batson
Post by: welshbear on Wednesday 22 February 12 14:45 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find out about Catherine Batson - I know she was born 1883/1884 Angle and was married to John Scourfield. I have managed to trace her in the 1871 and 1881 Census where she is boarding in both instances, in 1871 with an 80 year old man named Lane Lewis  ??? Where are her family?

I am not able to find anything about her parents - can anyone help?

Many thanks

Catherine was baptised at Rhoscrowther in 1863 and born in 1862. She possibly has an older brother William George Batson who had been baptised at Angle in 1854.
If req'd (and no one beats me to it), I can have a look at P.R.'s for you on my next visit to the R.O.
I wonder if their father was a soldier based at Popton ??
Have you looked at all types Batson surname in Pembrokeshire on Free BMD.

For additional future reference, an Anne Batson was buried at Pwllcrochan in 1817 and ;
John Batson a farmer of Haverfordwest St Mary married Sarah Thomas at Angle 17 Oct 1830.
These last two x/ref nicely with Free BMD search.

Please post if you are going to purchase birth certificate, then I need not search for the baptism entry.
You don't give an age for John Scourfield, so I hope this may be the gentleman you are looking for;
From my database of the parish registers of Stackpole Elidor in the register which cover baptism 1813 to 1930 I note the following
23 Jul 1852 John to John & Sarah Scourfield of Stackpole Village a labr baptised by F. Geo. Leach
02 Nov 1855 John to John & Sarah Scourfield of Stackpole Village baptised by F. Geo. Leach (Note entered in the margin against this entry is shown "Confirmed 1887")

These are 2 of 7 children shown to this couple who live either at Stackpole Village or Stackpole Quay.

It looks as if Sarah was of Stackpole Cheriton at her death and burial on the 14 Dec 1902 aged 83 yrs buried by Francis R.A. Hamilton

I note a John Scourfield was buried 08 June 1922 aged 66rs by E.T. Roderick and a John Scourfield was buried 24 Aug 1868 aged 43 yrs by F. Geo. Leach.

 :) Thank you all for your help.

Catherine I know was born 1864 in Angle ( so Omega 1, I believe this is the correct birth record for her - thankyou  ;)) - I have found her in the 1891 census married to John Scourfield ( born 1859, died 1940)  with their 5 children living at Williamston Carew. In 1881 she was boarding with James and Jane Harris in Rhoscrowther ( and married John later that year - thanks Omega 1 for the ref no for that marriage) and in 1871 was boarding with Lane Lewis @ Corside Farm House, Rhoscrowther. Anything further back than that, I just don't know.

Orielbenfro - your findings of John Batson and Sarah Thomas of Angle marrying in 1830 is certainly worth me pursuing as these may be her parents?  I have as yet not searched FreeBMD for Batson - only for Catherine's birth and found nothing. On your offer, I would welcome you to look at the PR's at the RO on your next visit - thank you.  ;D

Catherine I know was born 1864 in Angle

No she wasn't I'm afraid she was born in 1862 most lightly at Rhoscrowther and baptised at Rhscrowther in 1863.

If this information is unacceptable and I know beyond doubt there is no other Catherine Batson in the area, then there is little point in my looking at P.R.'s. Likewise goes for John Scourfield of Stackpole.

I have located another John Scourfield baptised at Carew in 1860, much closer to East Williamston than Stackpole, Angle et el., and the date of your interest.

  :-[ I am sorry about this - I was working with data provided by a family member and clearly they were wrong! Sorry!

I would still like to take you up on your kind offer of looking up the PR's for both Catherine Batson and John Scourfield.

Many thanks to your Orielbenfro.  :)

I have to apologise that because I failed to read simple information in a straight line across a page, I got the wrong dates for Catherine, thankfully I double checked whilst at the Record Office today and found the following ;

Rhoscrowther Baptism Register
Born in Dec 1863 Baptised 01 Dec 1864 Catherine dau of Elizabeth Batson of Carthouse Green Angle a farmers daughter baptised

Angle Baptism Register
16 Sept 1831 Elizabeth Mary to John & Sarah Batson of Carthouse Green a Farmer (Pvte Baptism)
26 May 1833 Sarah to John & Sarah Batson of Carthouse Green a Farmer (Pvte Baptism)
21 Nov 1834 Mary to John & Sarah Batson of Carthouse Green a Farmer (Pvte Baptism)

I have a jpeg of the mrge entry of John & Sarah at Angle, drop me an email address by P.M. and I will forward it to you.

Once again my apologies for my error.

No I did mean Jane Batson, she is either a daughter or if you are very lucky old enough to be John's mother ~ we live in hope.
Likewise I'm pretty sure that Anne Batson buried at Pwllcrochan could well be John's wife and John's mother (if you follow me ??)
Have a nice holiday, living in Pembroke one is not in need of such events as one is on almost permanent holiday.

Hello welshbear,
I hope that you are still interested in the Batson family of Bluewell, Pwllcrochan.  Catherine was the first of three daughters born to John and Sarah Batson.  I am a descendent of her sister Sarah Ann who married Mark Roch and farmed Penyholt Farm Castlemartin.  Sarah Anne was a formidable woman, having about eleven children and, as a widow, farming over 300 acres.  She is my great grandmother and I have photos of her.  I am engaged in researching her father  John who may have been a child prodigy:  I possess his school mathematic books written in the most immaculate copperplate  handwriting - although he was only aged 14 (1804) at the time.  Sarah Anne is buried in Castlemartin cemetery.
Please get in touch - I live in Pembroke Dock,    RIJ

Catherine BATSON was the daughter of Elizabeth BATSON  b1831 and recorded in the 1881 census of Pembroke Union Workhouse as unmarried, aged 50, a pauper, domestic servant, birthplace Angle Pembrokeshire.  Her sisters were Sarah Anne b1833 and Mary b1834.

Elizabeth BATSON (Elizabeth Mary) was the daughter of John BATSON (1790-1864) (buried Pwllcrochan) and Sarah nee THOMAS (1798-1859).

John BATSON's parents were Peter BATSON (?-1810) and Anne GRIFFITHS (1798-1859).  They were married at Pwllcrochan in 1781.   She was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth GRIFFITHS.

Peter BATSON was 'of Bullwell' and there remains today Bullwell Bay within the jetty of the Rhoscrowther oil refinery.  Old maps show that there was a ferry from Bullwell due north across Milford Haven to Milford.  In the old days it might be easier to get to Milford Haven than Pembroke.

This might explain why some Batsons could be found north of the haven - such as Jane BATSON who ran a boarding and day school in Short Row, Haverfordwest in 1830.

Some info on Catherine Batson ( my great great grandmother)...

Her mother Elizabeth was brought up by her parents at Carthouse green in Angle (they were originally from Rhoscrowther) until they died and Elizabeth went into service at Stackpole Court for Lord Cawdor where she fell pregnant with Catherine (my grandmother says Lord Cawdor himself did the deed). As she was unmarried Elizabeth went to the poorhouse in Pembroke and Catherine was raised at Corside Farm. When she was 16 Catherine was sent to Pembroke fair where she was hired by John Scourfield to work for him at his farm in West Williamston, Carew. John and Catherine ended up marrying.

Hello rjhh,
Thank you for your information posted yesterday (13AUG2017).  I passed Carthouse Green farm yesterday on my way from Pembroke Dock to Angle.  It looks to be well kempt but is now a private house not a farm.
As Catherine BATSON is your great great grandmother and her sister Sarah Anne is my great  grandmother, we are related (but I'm not sure of the exact relationship).  Sarah Anne is buried in Castlemartin.
I'm pretty sure that when my grandfather Mark ROCH (Sarah Anne's last child) died, one of the mourners was a Sourfield. I will check.  Mark ROCH and his wife Amy Gwendoline (nee Willing) are buried in Lanion Cemetery, Pembroke Dock.
