John and Rachel BOOTH arrived in Victoria in 1853 on the 'James Brown' (I think ) - bringing their son John with them. Rachel's maiden name was BRUERTON.
They came from Warwickshire/Staffordshire. I've managed to get back a couple of generations in UK before hitting brickwalls.
their family:
Fanny 1849 - 1849
John 1850 - 1895 m Blanche Buckingham PERCY 1875 in North Melbourne - got them sort of sorted.
MaryAnn 1854 - 1924 m John Thomas DALEY 1876 Victoria somewhere. John DALEY was a teacher.
I'd like to try and fill in this family of DALEY.
Children all had very distinctive names, and I've done some research and managed to fill in some of the info - they were living at Yea. Some of them are buried at Yea but I haven't seen the graves - I believe they are unmarked.
DALEY children
Elsa Marie Bruerton 1877 - 1952
Zoe Thirza Curzon 1879 - 1972
Eric Momford Curzon 1882 - 1956
Oswy Irving Curzon 6 Jun 1884 -
Rand Orm 23 Mar 1889 -
Esme Alifaire 27 Jul 1891 -
Roslyn Alva 3 Nov 1892 - 1969
Mervyn Ainslie Curzon 7 Oct 1895
Olive Freya Bruerton 20 Jun 1896
Any help would be greatly appreciated please - I've just checked and I don't have any more info re marriages etc. :D
Wiggy :)
-
Actually their arrival is a little problematic as the family I've found looks right - providing the transcribed got Esther and Rachel mistaken - only trouble is they are on different pages in the records - does this matter - I have searched the PROV original record copies at length, and can find no others which would fit the bill! also ages are out a bit - a big bit really - so if anyone can help me clear this matter up - great!!
The record I found was as Assisted Migrants!

Oswry Irving had another name "Curzon" DALEY
There are many entries in the electrol roles for him.
In 1919 he is living with Eva and Lorna Amelia in Moonee Ponds
He's on his own in Moonee Ponds in 1963
Looks like he married Eva HAYLES in 1908 in Victoria.
-
Thanks Ted - Electoral rolls coming up! ;)
And Trove . . . .
Wiggy :)
-
Rand Orm also has Curson as a middle name. He is also on the electrol roles
Looks like he married Daisy Adeline Stevens in 1916 in Sydney NSW
-
Esme Alifaire had a child called Kenneth William John THRELFALL b 1930 d 1936 in Wangaratta. His father was Robert George THRELFALL
-
Care to bet that their father's mother's maiden name was Curzon? ;) ;D
I did have that extra name written in my files - don't know why I didn't have it in my spiel - but thanks for all info!!
-
This is Esme Alifaire Threlfall's death: 1974 Heidelberg, Victoria age 83. Father: John Tho DALEY mother Mary Ann BRERETON # 8933
Red post: No problems Wiggy. ;)
-
You are a fount of info - thanks Ted!
Wiggy
-
Roslyn Alva also has Curzon in her name.
Looks like she didn't marry. She was a Postal Officer.
Red post: no problems Wiggy - its more fun than my ancient brick walls ;D
-
Mervyn Ainsley married Amelia Campain Lorna PRESS in 1916 in Victoria.
and he died in 1952 in Heidelberg Victoria
-
Olive Freya Bruerton DALEY stayed in Yea and wasn't married in 1949. She was a dress maker.
Cant find her death yet though.

Here is a little article on Oswy and Olive in Sunday School

Olive also organised a St John's Ambulance course for 30 ladies in Yea.

Hi Ros - thanks for that - ;) Going to have my work cut out slotting all this info into the right departments - thanks girls!! :D
-
Will do that Yea search Ted - good idea
- I've noticed it is in Trove now so - good thinking! being a local school teacher is probably good for getting your name in the paper - why didn't I think of that before! ::)

Wonderful what you can learn from death notices isn't it!
Olive married Mr Jones, lived in Yea, and Elsa married Mr Ball and lived in Tasmania!
It does help to have handle on things before searching the papers though!
I wonder if the Booths could have entered Aus via another port other than Victoria - or do you think I've probably got it right even though their names and ages are out!

Dee,
Do you know if the R means Registry office - or what??
Wiggy :)
I am not VIC savvy, but I think it means the entry has been REVISED at some date after the initial entry. I think I read that somewhere on the Aussie Board here at RChat . It would be worthwhile looking at the online index on one of the commercial websites.
Cheers, JM ;) ;)

...... I can think of spelling errors, or names in wrong order, or wrong names indexed etc ! The hired help at the BDM office may have had no local knowledge of the locations, family surnames etc. or errrr..... like in my cousin's case .... HE had given the wrong names for BOTH his parents..... His bride had also given wrong names for her parents.... Huuuuummmmmm ..... eeeerrrrrrrr ..... They were confused .... shhhhh .... it was WWII and they were both in uniform..... It was sorted when they both returned to civilian life ..... I could add HE was an Officer, aged 30, and she was no spring chicken either.... And neither had been married previously .... HE initially cited his paternal grandparents ..... I have not ever figured out how the people she had initially cited were connected to her. But of course that happened in NSW, ummm.... Sydney Registry Office.
Cheers, JM

Just a summary of the things we found (we found more this is the basics)

Zoe Thirza Curzon 1879 – 1972 didn’t marry
Eric Momford Curzon 1882 - 1956 m Jessie TAYLOR 1910
Oswy Irving Curzon 6 Jun 1884 – 1975 m Eva HAYLES 1908
Rand Orm Curzon 23 Mar 1889 - 1957 m Daisy Adeline STEVENS 1916
Esme Alifaire 27 Jul 1891 – 1974 m Robert George THRELFALL in ?

Olive Freya Bruerton 20 Jun 1896 – ?? wasn’t married in 1949 m Mr Jones
-
You are all wonderful!!
Please can anyone see a death for John Thomas Daley - he's the father of this lot - I don't think i've missed it in the avalanche of good info.
He seems to disappear off the Rolls after the 1924 roll - but there are rather a lot of John Thomas Daleys and they can't all be he - I don't think he was omnipresent!
Ahh well JM - when you put it like that . ;D ;D . . . that's lateral thinking for you!! but there were rather a lot of them in this family, and others we've investigated - ;) ;) I take your point though!! ;D
Thanks for the summary Ted -
- Olive married Mr Jones sometime after 1949 and before 1952 - she is Mrs Jones at Mervyn's death!
-
And while you are there JM - point me to incoming passengers to other states - if the family I found on the 'assisted' list isn't correct! Please :D
Don't do that - I have found how to do it - still can't find them in NSW though. Not in the narrow time frame of 1851 - 1854 Well there is one in Jun 1851 - would they have time to be in the census in UK before catching the ship? and their baby doesn't seem to be with them - then they had to get around to Melbourne - Nah . . . . ::) :-\
-
NSW State Records Office
1. Find surname on the keyname search then scroll through the list, find year and ship name http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/ (and it includes Port Philip to about 1853)
2. then try http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/guides-and-finding-aids/nrs-lists/nrs-5316 and JUMP straight in and scroll through etc
or try http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/
for QLD http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/index/immigration.asp and remember that apart from steerage issues and lack of names etc .... the Qld records were badly affected by the 1893 floods.
Cheers, JM
-
Can't find a death for John Thomas 192o or after......there's a few Johns but no idea which could possibly be him at this stage.
Interesting point though......I put just the name Curzon as a given name into one of the databases.....and got names with the surname of BRUTON.....not far removed from BRUERTON.
Dee :)
-
Oh gee thanks for that JM - will do just those things!
Dee - that's odd I will have to do a trawl through the papers and see what I can see. Might start with Yea! ;)

DALEY. -On the 24th September (suddenly),
at Kerang, Mary Ann, relict of the late John Thomas Daley, Yea; loved mother of Elsa, (Mrs. Ball), Zoe, Eric, Oswy, Olive, Orm, Esme (Mrs. Threlfall), Roslyn, and Mervyn, aged 70 years.
The Argus - 25 Sept 1924
-
I have that paper clip - didn't notice the 'relic of' though - thanks for that Ted! So also in 1924 - if he was there for the Electoral roll p or had they forgotten to update it!
Wonder when the election was that year!
I will pursue the matter - good find ;)
Do ya think we'd better get dinner?? ::) :-\ ;D ;D
Wiggy ;)
-
Lani says yes!
Can't find a death for John Thomas in the earlier database either. :-\
Dee :)
-
Yeee Haaa got it!!!
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0kfm/
18th July 1924
Right, dinner!
-
I couldn't find his death but then I find the newspapers are better for deaths in more recent years.
And Wiggy - get someone else to cook ;) ;D ;) I am 8)
-
Unless I run down to the shops for F&C, there is no one else - but it will be salad as usual - 'cos I love it - so no cooking!! ;) ;)
Thanks for you help everyone! ;) Might find their children later - much later!! another day even!! I went to school with the grand daughter of one of these people - I wonder which one!! ;) Can't ask her - don't know where she is!
-
Lucky you, Ted!
Found the death....note the spelling! ::)
Jno Thos DALY aged 75 died at YEA in 1924.
Father = Jas Jno Daly & Mother = Mary MCPHEE
Ref = 12647
Dee :)
-
Don't make it easy do they, Dee!! Like the news paper announcements - easy once you have somewhere to home in on the which!
Thanks for that!
-
Must say John Thomas Daley was a very busy lad in Yea and as Ted says there are lots of references to his activities - great stuff Ted.
He was headmaster of the school and lay-reader in the parish as well as secretary to various clubs!
That's enough for tonight!

Little bit more tracking on this family
- really BOOTHS this time. ;D John Booth married Blanche Buckingham Percy in 1875 reg 2642 - their family :-
I have been looking and looking but cannot find several cert reg numbers. Got most of them I think ;)
Marriage Marion Rachel Booth 1879 - 1953 to Walter Henry Holmes Quite possibly in Horsham - and quite possibly later than one would expect.
Marriage Percy Rupert Booth to Eliza Northousen 1922 Melbourne I think. Don't know about children here.
" Stanley Bruerton Buck'ham Booth to Violet Amy ? ??year
(Stan b 1884 - 1964 - had four children first being John - ? year.)
Also looking for
death of Esca Bruerton Booth 1876 - 1956 Wangaratta Victoria
" Alice Rose Booth/Darnell 1878 - 1959 in Perth WA
" Marion Rachel Holmes 1879 - 1953 Horsham Vic
" Bessie Louise Buck/ham Cann 1882 - 1962 Perth WA
Thanks folks!
One question - is the number on the marriage certificate signed in the church register the same one that goes on the state reg?? OK sounds a dumb query doesn't it. ::)
Wiggy :)
-
The first time I can find Marion with Walter at Corrangorach is 1942 - in 1949 there is with them Walter Kevin Holmes - maybe a nephew??? Don't think they had children!
Farming - possibly property name.

Thanks Ros - much appreciated!
Last mention of Marion as booth is 1937 - so married between 1937 and '42.
-
Just been looking - I have the birth regs for those two
- Alice was two years older and Bessie 6 years younger!! Someone didn't know what they were saying when they registered those two!! ::) ;D ;D not that it matters one iota!! Thanks for the info!
-
I've found Marion's death reg - and guess what - her age is wrong too - i think those Booth girls were all shading their ages for one reason or another!! :o
-
Haven't read all the thread ....so...
http://home.vicnet.net.au/~kerangfh/ have copies of the burial register, and this
has also been indexed- not available online though.
Marriage in Vic

Death
HOLMES Walter Henry

At Horsham 71 years 1959 Reg#27875
No MI for Marion or Walter at Horsham but my resource does not include the Lawn Area of the cemetery.
Connangorach is a rural locality [it may be the name of a Parish - similar to the area where I live and simply named after the Parish of **** County of ***** No gazetted township] I notice that Marion's electoral roll listing is Ballina Park, Connangorach.
Thomas Sherlock HOLMES is Wm H's brother.
It would appear Walter was married previously. I suggest you search Trove - there a number of news items including the death of his first wife and son. Marriage of another son in 1950 - son of Walter of Ballina Park and the late Mrs HOLMES.

Thanks Cando - so maybe Walter Kevin Holmes living with Marion and Walter Henry is a son from a first marriage - I'll go Troving - ;)
A troving , a troving,
I go some more a troving . . . . . . etc :D :D but first I'll go walking in this beautiful day!

Tribute to Marion

Wiggy have a trawl through the Horsham Times - lots of info on the family. Walter and Marion moved to into Horsham in 1950.
Cheers

-
Yep ;D ;D
Managed to find first wife's death, name and births of children, death of son aged 17, marriage of other son in 1950. Info about Walter's 2 brothers killed in action - very very informative.
- been doing that half the afternoon - lots of mentions there aren't there :D- terrible year was 1937 for Walter - lost wife and son in two months! :'( :'( He grew good wool apparently!! ;)
I've seen a photo of Marion - (which I actually think is probably my grandmother, from that paper I think) - feeding a lamb - not sure how to access it - I've looked through most of the mentions. I must confess I missed a couple of years - bet it was in those years - but do you have to do something special in the looking to get to photos??
-
Don't ask me why 'cos I don't know ::) :-\ :-\
- but to day I've found two marriages which I swear weren't evident yesterday
- anyhow I now have the date and ref # for Percy Eliza Booth marriage and Stanley B.B Booth marriage.
Also Marion now thanks to Cando.
Deaths - now have all Esca - has just turned up !!
Has anyone else noticed that sometimes records are there and sometimes they aren't? I isn't just me is it??
Thanks to Ros and Cando for those.
Wiggy :)
-
Has anyone else noticed that sometimes records are there and sometimes they aren't?
Absolutely Wiggy! :)
(perhaps we forget to remove a filter from a previous search ;))
For illustrated articles on trove, there is a filter there on the left where you can choose "Illustrated" and it then gives sub-categories of Photo and illustration.
cheers,
Ros
-
I'm looking and looking - and i can't see where it says illustrated. I found one place that says images and clicked on that - but then I can't put in the years I want to look - :-\ :-\ :-\
And now my eyes have had enough for the day =- so I will try again tomorrow!!! I might have an inspiration in the night!!!
Thanks Ros. ;) ;)
Wiggy :)
-
Hi Wiggy,
I suspect that you couldn't see illustrated down the left if you were searching for "marion booth" or "sister booth" or "marion holmes" within Horsham Times as there were no illustrated articles. :(
Try searching for "marion booth"~2 across all newspapers and then down the left you will see
Title
all the newspapers
Category
artcles or ads or family notices
Illustrated
Decade
Word Count
There are 4 that are illustrated. I'm afraid that none of them is relevant - seems to be a short fiction story :(
cheers,
Ros
-
Thanks Ros
- I will get there later and will try your method!! I did try putting in pictures before asking for a person - but will try again - I will try to find the photo i have and scan it to show you - might be from the Argus maybe!
- I'm making fig jam and pickling tomatoes and cucumbers this morning!!
Change from hunting Dead people!! ;D ;D

Roslyn Alva Curson Daley was my grandfather, I may have info for you
-
Hello jdaley and welcome to Rootschat! A far distant relative comes to the surface! ;)
Are you doing family history - or did you just Google and happen here? ;) It is a really good and friendly site and lots of help available - as well as finding people who have knowledge.
Mary Ann Booth/Daley was my Great grandfather's sister - that's where the connection lies. So we have common rellies some way back, with John and Rachel Booth.
I would love to share any information you have! And ask a couple of questions! - But I have learnt something already - I'd assumed Roslyn Daley was a female - maybe why i was having trouble in the first place. We will need to swap information via email or private message I suspect - so you will need to make two more posts on Rootschat before we can do that. Just comments here - or somewhere.
Looking forward to making contact.

I have studied family history for a long time, but only looked at the internet recently.
Roslyn was a male, obviously.
He had 4 boys, the last Grahame is still with us.
John Alva Daley m Margaret Elizabeth Charteris 2 b 2 g
Noel xxx m Olive and then xxx adopted b and g
Eric xx m Patricia 1b 2 g
Graham xxx m Dorothy 2 b
My memory is rusty this morning but I will contact Grahme for more info because he has been tinkering of late.
I had some details about Mary Ann BOOTH
I am happy to use the chat page, it may help somebody else.
-
but it gets tricky when you get forward to live people!! ;) ;)
I went to school with a girl from the Daley clan - and her father was a second cousin, obviously - but I can't work out where Stan fits in - I can mention him as he is now longer with us! He had a girl and a boy.
Thanks for this info - a little more to add to the branches! ;)

You may have already seen the will for John Thos DALEY, gent, of "Bruerton", Hocking St, Yea, died 18 July 1924. Leaves all in trust for his wife Mary Ann for her lifetime and various bequests to his children after Mary Ann's death. As we already know, Mary Ann only outlived him by a couple of months.
Mary Anne's will is also digitised - leaves all to be divided among her children

sorry Wiggy I don't have any pictures, I visited my husband's Aunt Elsa Legg (Daley) in Queensland last year and asked if she could send me some photos of the Booths and Daleys, she said she would but as yet I haven't received any, but she is old and I guess I won't hold my breath. :'(

Any photos of Booths and Daleys would be welcomed thanks :)

Have to say they would be welcomed by me too!! ;D ;D
I have a few, but not of John Daley or any of his offspring.
