Title: Hull marriage look up request-COMPLETE
Post by: Headgirl on Tuesday 28 February 12 16:37 GMT (UK)
My gt grandfather FRED SAMPSON was widowed then married again in Oct-Dec 1921 in Hull to ELLEN CARR. Im looking for information on Ellen as I have nothing on her at all other than she already had a son and a daughter when she married Fred. If she too had been previously married, would Carr be her married or maiden name?

Thanks

Do you know when she was born, or died?

She would have married using her previous married name, but there's nothing to stop her using her maiden name.

What maiden name was mentioned on your father's birth certificate?

She was born in approx 1889 as I have found a death record for her in 1966 aged 77. I havent got any certifiactes yet, I thought I would ask on here first. Im interested in finding her maiden name and parents names if possible.

OK! Next step, when and where was your father born?
If he is still alive, then don't mention his name (RootsChat policy! ;D)

The birth registration will have his mother's maiden name.

Apologies, I dont think I have explained myself properly, Im only looking for any information on Ellen Carr and thought her marriage to my gt grandfather would be the best place to start. Both her and Fred are now dead.

I will more than likely order their marriage certificate but thought if anyone on here could help it would save me a few pennies  ;)

But we need her maiden name - and the best place to get that is either the marriage certificate, or the birth of your father (either certificate or online indexes).

All these sources will have her maiden name.

Once we have that we can find her marriage to Mr Carr.
And that should take us to before the 1911 census.

Looking at FreeBMD, and assuming your father was born in East Riding, these maiden names come up on Sampson births:

Gardham
Martin
Skow
Simons
Eden
Goulden
Harrison
Walkington
Dove

This is not much help but they married 1921 St Saviour (YorkshireBMD) http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/marriages.php

Sometimes if the person has been married before there's usually an * to indicate both names,
Ellen's name is only listed once as CARR Ellen SAMPSON Fred

You could also try using Yorkshire BMD for the births of her children to see if they have
entered the mother's maiden name

No maiden names entered on that site for Hull births!

I was planning on using FreeBMD

At the Beverley Treasure House today with a few minutes to spare
9th July 1921 at St Saviour
Fred Sampson 34 Widower, postman residing at 5 Montrose Street, Hull
Ellen Carr 31 Widow, residing in the East Riding
Parents names
John Thomas Sampson
Herbert Walker
Witnesses
Samuel Holmes Walker
Lucy Peavey (last name difficult to read) could be Percy
Marriage by licence
It looks as if Carr was Ellens married name and her maiden name was Walker

There is a Ellen Walker born 1890 living in Keyingham on the 1901 census, in the same household is her father Herbert and a brother Samuel H
This matches the fathers name and one of the witnesses in the parish records

A Ellen Walker married a Tom Carr or a John Tuplin 4th Quarter 1909 in Patrington

In 1911 Tom and Ellen Walker have two children Ethel and Tom Edward

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on,
