Title: Brown Family Parkanaur estate
Post by: brunosean on Saturday 03 March 12 02:04 GMT (UK)
Hello
I am seeking assistance in following a weak lead. I would like to know more about my great grandfather... Henry Brown.
He was of the Church of Ireland.
He was a game keeper in the Parkanaur estate.
He and his wife Elena, Henena /Lena      [who I think once lived in the Townland of Edenacrannon]   had two children who were born in 1870/1872 approx.
The childrens names were Elena/ Helena and Anne Jane and were born in that order.

They may have been married in St Michaels in Castlecaulfield or St Patricks Donaghmore.
All help gratefully appreciated.

Trying another lead for information about Henry  and Lena [Helena/Elena] Brown of Edenacrannon.
Henry was of Church of Ireland so the may be associated with St Michaels/St Patricks church in Castlecaulfield.
Henry might have been born in the area

Henry  worked as gamekeeper in Parkenaur in the 1865-1875 era and they had two children Elena or Helena and Anne Jane.

I am wondering if I could get a marriage detail because I dont know Elenas surname.
Maybe the birth certs or Batism certs might give this.

In a previous search of associated documents Elena is mentioned as coming from Edenacrannon..which is the townland [or one of them] upon which Parkanaur is situated.

Any information ,no matter how small ,would be appreciated.
Thanks
Sean

Hi,
On 8 Nov 1870 Elena Brown was born to Henry Brown and Elena BROWN and the birth was registered in Dungannon. It may be worthy of note that a Joseph Henry Broen was born to Henry Brown and Helena BROWN on 15 Aug 1868. This birth was registered in Armagh.

Thank you very much for that,K.
I am sure that is the family I am searching for.
I am really trying hard to find the name of the  mother Elena.
There were not too many people of that name I guess in such a small place as Edenacranna, and yet I cant seem to break the puzzle.
Maybe Henry Brown was from the area.
They went on to have another child Margaret, born in Wexford and a son Henry who is reputed to have been born in Scotch Street outside Portadown Co Armagh.
.Do you think the Broen might be a mis -spelling or poor handwriting?
Thanks for your help.
I see that you help many people and I hope you know how valued your expertise is and what it means to all of us.

Hi,
Sorry, typo, Joseph Henry's surname was BROWN. I have also found the marriage of Henry Brown to Helena Brown on 30 Sept 1867 in Milltown Church of Ireland, Lurgan District, Co. Armagh.

Thank you for the help.
Does that imply that Elenas name was Brown also?

Hi,
Yes, it would certainly seem so. It may be of interest to note that my Ggrandfather was Henry Brown and my grandfather was William Henry Brown. My grandfather had a brother called Joseph and named one of his sons as Joseph. The family came from Hill Street, Lurgan but I cannot find a connection to your family.

Regards

Thats quite interesting.
It appears my Henry worked at his GAMEKEEPER profession for a number of different estates..I think he worked for the Verners at Church Hill /Verners Bridge. No, I never heard Lurgan being mentioned in dispatches. Went to see Parkanaur this week. They are renovating it. Lovely place.
Thanks again. I will keep trying...but the info on Helena is great ,as I have another wee piece of the jigsaw. Keep an eye out for me please.

Thank you Aghadowey,
This information really expands greatly what I know and ties in well with scraps of information in my collection. The Townland where John Brown was born is actually Rathmanow, which is a part of the Farrell estate in Moynalty Co. Meath. Henry Brown definitely worked for a Coln. Farrell, but we never knew where....so it all ties in,thanks.

How do I get copies of the marriage cert/baptismal certs. Is it through the Church or PRONI?
Regards and thanks

PRONI have microfilmed copies of some church records- you can check their website at www.proni.gov.uk. Up until recently they couldn't make copies of microfilmed church records without written permission from the minister but not sure if theat's still the policy. If it has then you would need to know exactly which church and a fairly exact date. Probably far easier to contact the church directly.
See here for details included on marriage certificates, how to order them, etc.:

Hello Haircut
Thanks for the response to my post and it is very interesting that the house still is in use. The Browns would definitely have lived there as Henry my Great grandfather ,the Gamekeeper, worked on the estate between about 1886 and 1875 and 2 children were born there. Also my grandfather,[also Henry] lived there as well.
Is the house near the main house or is it in the townland of Edenacrannon?
I would love to see it and get a photograph or two. Although I live in the South, I do business in Craigavon from time to time and I have visited the main house and grounds a few times this year. But I didnt know where the gamekeepers house was.
It certainly would be nice to have a chat with Mr B*.
Incidentally, there is a very good site..Killeeshil and Clonaneese historical society, which is full of great stuff about the area, with old maps, school records etc. Maybe you already know this.
Thanks once again
Sean

this particular house is in a small row of ex tied cottages.probably lived in by estate workers. they are on the same lane as the old school house.
if i get a chance ill ask the gentleman which house exactly the gamekeeper lived in. i know for a fact that the last occcupants before my sister were the forest manager and his wife

Thank you so much. I have no real notion of where those tied cottages are located, so I would appreciate your help in just getting directions to where they are located, relative to the main house.
Thanks once again

Aughintober road in Edenacrannon is the exact address. It leads onto the estate of Parkanaur.. Google away...it's a bit of a distance from the main house. If this row of houses are not where the a keeper lived then its my genuine mistake. There's a story of the four houses in that row being built for the landowners four daughters. However the houses were all different in size and are terraced.and the old school, now a house is at the end of that private road
