Hello Fufuss,

A belated welcome to RootsChat.

What denomination were the Jackson family? Civil registration in Ireland commenced in 1864 so it will be a case of searching for details of your ancestor in Church records.

Thank you for the welcome.

My Jackson family were Presbyterian...I see from the Canadian1881 census.

I am told that my g.grandfather's middle name was Slater
(if that could help in any way).

Thanks for any help you could give me...this family has me stuck!

Regards, Karen

Armagh is both a city and a county so you need to narrow down the area in Ireland before you will be able to find church records.
Have you traced the family through Canadian Census records, deaths certificates, gravestones, newspaper obituaries, etc. in case there's a mention of a place in Ireland besides 'Armagh'?

P.S. forgot to say welcome.

Hello Fufuss - saw your query and wondered if you had discovered info about your g.grandfather James Jackson. I am trying to find information about my g.grandfather Robert Jackson, born in Ireland about 1822. Emigrated to Canada (Ontario)about 1840. Family lore suggests that he may have travelled with a brother (name unknown). Do you have any info about your g.grandfather's family such as names of parents or siblings? Any possibility of a family connection here - if so would appreciate hearing from you
Regards
Jack

Hello Keesa- yes, I have discovered some info about my g.grandfather James Jackson.--His parents were David Jackson b.1808 ...his mother was Mary(Molly) Haggerty        b.abt. 1793...both born in Ireland.David emigrated to Ontario in1834.

I  have found that he had a sibling, Hugh, b.1834 in Ireland
...& there's a possibility that he also had a brother Henry,b.1836 in Ireland.---Now,the only Robert that I have found is a son of Hugh's, b.abt 1861 in Ontario.

I don't know if this is any help to you.-I don't see a family connection...but still could  be, as I'm sure there were lots of siblings that I am missing as of yet. these Jacksons lived in Dundas County (kind of southeast of Ottawa)

-These Jacksons seem very elusive!-If I can be of any help, just let me know.

Regards, Fufuss

Hi there,

Do you have James S. Jackson's death in 1912?  They have his place of birth listed as County Derry, Ireland.

Since civil registration in Ireland started too late to trace this family and you need more information than 'Co. Derry' to find them in Ireland you need to go through all Canadian sources to look for further clues.
Any place of birth in Ireland mentioned on gravestones, newspaper obituaries or local histories?

Yes, Karen M. I also have David Jackson born in County Derry, Ireland as well.

And yes, I have James' death in 1912 in Winchester, Ontario, Canada.--David Jackson (my g.g. grandfather) also died in Winchester in July of 1883.

I am amazed that anyone else has the info I had searched for, for such a long time!--Are these your relatives also?

regards, Fufuss

It's been almost 10 years, but...

My g-g-g grandfather was also named James Slater Jackson, from Northern Ireland.  He isn't the same James Slater Jackson because he emigrated to New York about 1843.  But the name similarity is striking, so perhaps they were some sort of cousins ...

His father was also named James Jackson (I don't know the middle name), born around 1800. The Jacksons were Presbyterian. James Slater and his siblings were said to have been born in "Laurel Lodge" somewhere in County Tyrone.  My James Slater referred to it as "the ancestral estate of the Jacksons in County Tyrone", so it would have produced numerous Jacksons going back into the 1700s.  This structure seems to be gone now, and I don't know where it is (couldn't find it on Griffith's Valuation maps) but I suspect it was near the border with Armagh for several reasons that I won't go into now.   Suffice it to say that James the father was married somewhere in Armagh in 1827. So if your James and mine are connected, and geographically close, I would look for him in churches near the border with Tyrone.
