Hi Jake,

Would Agnes have gone to the USA 1st? I found this USA/Canada crossing info:
Border Crossings: From U.S. to Canada, about Miss Agnes Ritch
Name: Miss Agnes Ritch, Age: 41, Estimated Birth Year: abt 1888
Arrival Port: Stanhope, Quebec, Date of Arrival: 3 Nov 1929
Birth Location: Scotland
Gender: Female
Citizenship: American

Did Agnes marry and change surname? If so, before or after moving to Canada/USA?
Do have an estimate sailling date to North America?

If you can provide as much info about this person as you can it would help us help you :-)

I believe Agnes remained a spinster, and a family story is that she was unwilling to return to USA to help her elderly father and my second cousin twice removed [2nd marriage for both] in their old age.
The blank period for us is now roughly after about 1930 until her death ... that I am seeking.
Thank you for 1929 border crossing information.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that Agnes' residence in Canada is believed to have been OTTAWA.

On the 1929 Border Crossing document Agnes is grouped with a Mrs. Catherine Gibb, 51, from Berlin, NH, as well as David (22), Alison (12) and Hellen (18) Gibb.  Agnes's occupation in her own country (i.e. the US)  is given as Domestic, as is the occupation she intends to pursue in Canada.  The destination for all is given as Ottawa, where they will join Mrs. Gibb's husband, John S. Gibb.
She must have worked as a domestic for the Gibb family in Ottawa.  Unfortunately the Ontario death records index only goes to about 1939 at present so if she died after that date the record would not yet be available.

Thank you

That may be a useful lead to follow if any newspaper obituaries are available.

Hi Jake,

You may want to contact the Ottawa Public Library for an obit. You may want to check the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid as well to see if Agnes is listed in an Ottawa/Carleton Co area cemetery. You can then contact the cemetery administration to see about getting more info on her. Again, hope this helps.

Its been a while since you posted this but I found in the 1953 Voters Records, Agnes as a Housekkeper at Apt 31  255 Metcalfe Street, Ottawa and in 1957 at same address maked retired with a Mrs Catherine Gibbs.  I have been looking at the Gibb family to see what happened to them in case it provided any hints.

Alison SIMPSON (Child of Catherine and John S Gibb)

SIMPSON, Alison Gibb Peacefully on Remembrance Day, November 11, 2004. Predeceased by her beloved husband Harold. Survived by her children and their respective spouses, Clara and Amos and Joseph and Christine. Fondly remembered by her 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and several nieces, nephews and dear friends from across North America. Born June 12, 1917 in Berlin, New Hampshire, she moved to Gatineau with her family in 1929 and later lived in Brockville and Montreal. Dedicated member of the United Church of Canada and the Lorraine Chapter of the Eastern Star. We will always treasure her sense of humour, her story telling and genuine kindness to all. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Sunday, November 14, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Monday, November 15, 2004 at 1 p.m. Interment to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we kindly suggest a donation to the Lakeshore General Hospital to help them with the enormous needs of the sick and the elderly. We are forever grateful for the loving care she received at the Lakeshore General Hospital, the Richardson Hospital and Legault Residence.

Forgot to say that the connection between the Gibb family and the Ritch family through Agnes who worked for the Gibbs is the  Paper Mill in Watertown NY where John Gibb and Edward Ritch both worked.
