Can anyone tell me more about this company please? I have Henry Banks b 1821 and his son Louis Henry Banks (1850-1934) and his son Cecil Golightly Banks (1880-1960) in my tree. I have found a little on the internet but am intrigued to find out about the "Legendery Miss Banks".
Are there MI's for York Cemeteries any where on-line?
Thank you
Carol

Banks and Sons are still in York - now called Banks Music.
The company was founded in 1756.
This site might be a good starting point - www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk/Page/Index.aspx - or this: www.york.gov.uk/leisure/Libraries/archives/Items_held - or the Borthwick Institute: www.york.ac.uk/library/borthwick

I don't think so. The City of York and District FHS have published them on microfiche (though apparently more inscriptions have been discovered since), and also offer a search service by post. Details are on their website.
Alternatively you can contact York Cemetery direct - their website has a whole section on genealogy which includes a surname index (97 register entries for Bank(e)s) and information about their search services.
I haven't used any of these search services myself, but the charges look very reasonable.

I dont know whether you have progressed your search or if this query is still active. Cecil Golightly Banks was my Great grandfather. His daughter Janet and son Peter ran the business until their deaths. My mother ran the business until 2006 when she retired and sold the business, although the name has not changed.

Thank you for your message. It is good to hear from you. My connection is Annie Elizabeth Dresser (1880-1921) wife of Cecil Golightly Banks. She is my 1st cousin 2x removed. I have a family tree on Ancestry called A:Carol
-
so my mother and you have great grandparents who were siblings. Also we are related to CHristopher Dresser, the great Victorian Designer
-
You probably already know this, but Banks Music Shop is still in Lendal in York.

Inwest is your mother called Wendy?
-
No Judith Thorpe (nee Clark), her sister is Susan Bolger, their mother was Norah Banks, Cecil and Annie's younger daughter
Wendy is the daughter of Annie Banks son, Peter Banks, her sibling is Nicholas
ie Wendy is my mother's cousin

Thank you. I have Judith on my tree. I am going to try to send you my e-mail as I have some photos I would like to share with you. carol.mcintyre@gmail.com
