Title: 'Beaconsfield' Langbank *Completed*
Post by: sage on Saturday 10 March 12 02:23 GMT (UK)
I wonder does anyone have knowledge of a residence by the name of 'Beaconsfield' Langbank, Erskine, Renfrewshire.  A family by the name of Boyd resided there in 1901 and the head of the household was a Marine Superintendent (I have the census return).

Langbank, I've discoverd, is on the Glasgow side of Port Glasgow by the Clyde River.

Cheers, Sage.

Hi Sage

Struggling to see anything really on Beaconsfield.

Have you seen the will entry on SP for a William Brown in 1885, also a marine superintendent for Patrick Henderson & Co., merchants, ship and insurance brokers in Glasgow?

Given the same occupation for your Boyd and this William Brown, maybe some connection to do with the property itself to the occupation of both these men?

Might be just a co-incidence the occupation of marine superintendent.

The 1891 census shows a William Hollywood and a family. Following his death in 1898, his 1899 will entry shows him as an Engineer's Furnisher, Oil Merchant and Asbestos Manufacturer.

Likely your Boyds were the next family in?

From the book 'History of Langbank ' by Bridget MacKenzie;
Originally known as BALNACRAIG in MIDDLEPENNY ROAD.
Alexander Budge was himself a builder , and he seems to have built this house and EILDON as one structure, joined by  single storey rooms between the two main houses. He sold the Western half  as a house of 12 rooms , known as BEACONSFIELD VILLA, to one William Brown around 1880.

There is another page of the history of the house. Perhaps if you send me a PM I can forward it to your e-mail address.

regards,
baird

Must have been a substantial property from the description you gave, Baird - great info for Sage.

I can see an area referred to as Middlepenny here, just west of East Langbank. Would this be in the correct general area? www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/place_page.jsp?p_id=21880

Thank you to Monica, Ev and Baird,

As suggested, I've sent a PM to Baird. It looks like it was a private dwelling favoured by businessmen with connections to the Clyde.

Thanks again for all your input.  :)

Sage.

Sorry to jump in on this I noticed this thread was referring to Balnacraig. My family had the estate for about 30 years, wondering where you found the History of Langbank book, and if there is reference to William Grant, or the Grant family.

Thank you
Caitlin
