Title: Ewen Cameron Bruce -distinguished soldier, convicted felon- died Cheltenham 1925
Post by: corisande on Thursday 15 March 12 16:40 GMT (UK)
I am looking for help from anyone with access to local Cheltenham papers in 1925 - or can point me at such a source

My full notes on Ewen Cameron Bruce are   here, click link  (http://www.cairogang.com/other-people/auxiliaries/bruce/bruce.html)

He was born Cheltenham 1890

Joined Tank Corps in WW1, MC in 1917 and lost an arm

Went back to tanks and volunteered for Russia, where ironically in 1919 captured Stalingrad with one tank. He got DSO for this.

Joined Auxiliary Police in Ireland and was dismissed for striking civilians.

1920 Robbed a local Creamery in Kilkenny and was sentenced to 2 year in prison. Lost his MC and DSO for this as well

Returned to Cheltenham and died 1925 Apr 16. I am anxious to see if this was covered locally at the time, or discover where he was buried.

That very kind of you

Certainly shows that he did not commit suicide - given the funeral was held straight after his death. A Suicide would have entailed an Inquest and delay

I would be grateful if you could look when you are in the Gloucester Archives

Hi,
I checked St Mary parish church Cheltenham for the burial of Ewen Cameron BRUCE, circa April 1925, but unfortunately all burials ceased prior to this date and were transfered to Cheltenham Borough Council (CBC) Cemetery. There is NO record of Ewen's burial there.
I did find a BRUCE burial though which will probably be of interest:-
Alan George Cameron BRUCE was buried at CBC Cemetery 17th January 1929, aged 54.
If you can obtain a copy of Ewen's death certificate to find out in which parish he died I'll have another go at tracing his burial.

Thanks very much for that, that is very interesting. Looks as if they buried him away from his father - it is always difficult where "problems" have surrounded an individual like Ewen Cameron Bruce, as to how the family would have reacted.

I will see whether I can get any more on him, and re-post here if I do

Thanks for that Graham,

It is a very helpful link as you say

My problem is that I live in Spain, so my chances of getting to actual paper records in UK are remote - I can only really access online stuff, though I do make an annual pilgrimage to the National Archives in Kew!

I was shocked to read about Ewen's fall from grace! I met his wife EUGENIE's sister WINIFRED EVELYN POWER b1893, who was my elocution teacher, around 1967. Eugenie and Ewen had 2 children (born 1917 and 1921)both named after themeselves but cannot find what happened to them. Like most of her aunts Winifred died a spinster (in 1980) not long after her sister Eugenie in 1978.

Ewen & Eugenie had 3 children, Ewen Anthony Bruce (Tony) was the eldest, only son.
Tony was born in 1917 and died in 2002. He served in the RAF during WW2 flying Spitfires; shot down twice, one over Malta and bailed into the sea. Tony himself had 3 children; Ewen (Vince) Bruce; Charles (Nish) Bruce and XXX Bruce.

An incredible family.

Vince Bruce (1954-2011) was a famous rodeo performer and Nish Bruce (1956 - 2002) was the first SAS Soldier to parachute into the Falklands, awarded the QGM for his bravery in Northern Ireland and author to his autobiography: Freefall by Tom Read.

Dear all
Pertaining to my grandfather Ewen Cameron Bruce, if you wish to know more regarding his life  and the very strange trial that was  held in Ireland by a military court even though it should have been a civil one please log in his name on the wilkipedia site!
I would like to plainly state here I am the last remaining brother Nish and now Vince dead! My mother going out to America to nurse the latter through the last remaining few months of  life!
As you see my family is landed gentry the reason the wilkipedia biography is written is  because of what you chose to head the description of Ewen Bruces life with! Hmm a year! After my brothers death ! Thank u so much!  Perhaps u wanted to take the family down a peg or two!  I have to join this site for write of reply !
I see you have no sense of anything probably a case of the compassion and good manners  you dont know you have not got!
Be aware! If I can ever return what you have tried to bestow on my families name to your name! I will have pleasdure in doing so! God allowing
I do not wish you to apologise as comming from you would be meaningless  as for the nasty spiteful headline for my grandfathers  whole life keep it there if you wish it will be helpful as a reminder to meal to deal with you oh and my name is Andrew Gordon Cameron Bruce I dont know the title of the author who wrote my grandfathers headline  so I will hold all of you responsible without predjudice

With due respect Mr Bruce, Ewen Cameron Bruce was convicted for his crimes in Ireland by a court duly constituted under British law. Further hearings at courts of appeal confirmed the initial finding against him. Ewen Cameron Bruce "bestowed" these things on his family name (as you put it), not the original poster in this thread. Threatening others on the internet is hardly suggestive of the "compassion and good manners" you demand of others.

Dear moderator,
I am mortified and puzzled by your reply, I certainly did not intend that you should imagine my post was a threat indeed I merely stated I would bestow on you what you had bestowed on my family your reply indicates that what you  originally bestowed was meant in a threatening manner in the first place and that by my reciprocation I was doing likewise how strange
In regard the second part of your reply regarding my grandfather you are mistaken about appeals there were none they were denied there was no retrial even though witness testament was proved to be false as to the amount of money taken even that was found to be false with the person the money was stolen from not being sure of amount taken IRELAND at the time was in turmoil so the civil courts had broken down my grand father was in the auxiliary police not the army by then!
all I have written can be seen on EWEN CAMERON BRUCE WILKIPEDIA
I think I have been more than fair in pointing these things out to you I feel that someone not as strong as myself after such tragedy in their family may find your post  the last straw and perhaps do themselves in I have drawn attention to this in the sincere hope that you think of the living as well as the deceased especially when recent tragedy had struck as in my case
regarding your last statement Why? would I demand good manners? or compassion? from you? when I have already stated! and it has been established!  That you have neither!
I am sure this reply will not be posted just as my password was not excepted may be coincidence who knows? ? for you sir would you describe HENRY THE EIGTH as a murderer his unfortunate wives may think so but no he is described by his other positions in life my grandfather was much more than a very ?questionable felon charge as was his life! I wonder as to how history will remember you kindly I hope so! But then I suppose that would depend on who is writing it I am sure you have done incredible things in your life as others in your organisation
                              yours? no mine sincerely
                                  ANDREW BRUCE

TO THE MODERATOR
Thank you for allowing my reply, it was a nice surprise! It does make me feel better. On a general note I believe I am right in stating that the soldiers shot for cowardice during the great war have now been pardoned as we have come to know more about post traumatic stress!
when QUEEN VICTORIAS ,PRINCE ALBERT Was involved with the setting up of the VICTORIA CROSS HE Personally insisted that NO  person who was in receipt of it could ever have it taken from them no matter whatever in their future, occurred!  It was appreciated by the prince, that at the time of its award the person was Deemed "worthy"
I believe this consideration should be afforded to ALL THOSE "DECORATED" CHAMPAIGHN MEDALS AS WELL!  Any crime deserves but ONE punishment!
Regarding my Grandfather, he was one of the many" REMITTANCE MEN "Who came back from abroad to Defend his country in its time of need! OUR NEED"!
MAJOR EWEN CAMERON BRUCE Was a Brave man but definitely not a team player! Openly defying orders! IF  he felt it could be done he would usually Achieve it! But of course that made some jealous enemies! Especially regarding how much he was decorated! In such a short space of time!
Once again moderator I thank you for allowing at least, another point of view! And at best !For a light of illuminating understand! To be SHED! On those who BLED!
                                          Yours sincerely,(This time)

I felt to conclude this rather emotional issue I should give a loving closure on my brothers lives and perhaps to give some comfort to the people who knew them I cannot post in the way I normally would so my poet name is Andreqw bruce that's right spelt with a  Q! if you key  this and go to allpoetry.com you will see my poems for them, there. One is called" freefall" for Nish Bruoe ,the other is!  Vince Bruce, Wizard of whips and Ropes! At end of!  Au Revoir Ewen Bruce. I hope  Their friends and fans will gain some small comfort from them as I did writing them!
                                                             Goodbye,

Hello all.

I’ve just joined this forum, I’m not sure if this thread can be revived, but here goes.

It seems that Ewen Cameron Bruce wasn’t the only member to bring scandal or disgrace on the Bruce family  -  I think his half-brother,  Allan George Cameron Bruce was the focus of a much larger scandal which involved Winston Churchill.

Allan Bruce was a ‘colleague and rival’ of Churchill at Sandhurst  (Lavery, p. 12)
On passing out of Sandhurst, Churchill was commissioned as a subaltern in the 4th Queen’s Own Hussars in February 1895.

‘When it became known in the spring of 1895 that Bruce intended to join the 4th Hussars, a group of subalterns in the regiment, including Churchill, tried to keep him out’ (Russel).
‘Churchill and his cronies had decided that.............Bruce was unsuited to join their ranks’, and with Churchill acting as spokesman Bruce was informed that he was not wanted. (Rose, p. 33)

Bruce refused to be browbeaten and joined the regiment, where he was boycotted by Churchill’s group.

Under the pretext of meeting a veteran of Balaclava, Bruce was lured to the NCO’s mess, where he raised a glass to the health of the mess. Three days later Bruce was arrested and charged with ‘improperly associating with non-commissioned officers’ and condemned as unfit to serve with the 4th Hussars. He left the regiment and the army.

The cause of the hostility towards and harassment of Bruce is unclear, but it’s alleged that Bruce had knowledge of a homosexual relationship between Churchill and another cadet at Sandhurst (Morgan pp. 81 – 83)

Bruce’s father (Allan Cameron Bruce-Pryce) advocated on his behalf, and the culture of snobbery and bullying in the 4th Hussars became a national issue, debated in Parliament and condemned in the press (Coughlin).

Bruce-Pryce went so far as to allege that his son knew that Churchill had participated at Sandhurst in ‘acts of gross immorality of the Oscar Wilde type’. Churchill sued, and accepted a settlement out of court.

The affair didn’t die easily, being repeatedly raised by the journal ‘Truth’, and ‘....caused a scandal that very nearly ruined Churchill’s career’ (Russell).
Churchill's career was saved, but Bruce's was over less than a year after graduating Sandhurst.

I’ve become interested in Bruce since I bought his sword at auction on Monday. I can’t help wondering where the sword’s been for the last 120 years – it must have been a bitter memento of a very short and sad military career.
