Post by: emmguy on Monday 19 March 12 22:52 GMT (UK)
Looking for anyone related to Ernest Henry Barnes.............

Had a brother Frederick emigrated 1904 to Canada … who was unfortunately
 killed during WW1
He was married (Ernest) to a Jennie May and had two children...
Charles Henry and Arthur Leslie according to 1916 census…..

Relationship to me….they were Great Uncles…

Greeting emmguy,

It appears you are looking for info post the 1916 census? Do you know where they settled in Canada and where they were in 1916 - assuming western Canada for the moment.

Hello JDC

Thanks for the reply....heres the info I have on Ernest.....

In 1911 he was in:
Province: Manitoba District: Lisgar District Number: 17 Sub-District Number: 18
Ernest Barnes 22 .......recorded as married...however I have been unable to find a Jennie May Barnes born 1892..scotland..in 1911

In 1916 Canada Census of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta
Name: Ernest Henry Barnes Gender: Male
Marital Status: Married Age: 27 Est. Birth Year: 1889 Birthplace: England
Home in 1916: 12, Lisgar, Manitoba Address: 4, 7, 1, Oversea
Household Members: Name Age
Jennie May Barnes  24
Charles Henry Barnes  1
Arthur Leslie Barnes  0
Frederick Barnes  21 ....His brother

Im sure the address makes sense to you....it means very little to me....

Does that help

Thanks Emm

Hello again,

It sound like he was a home child. I beleive Barnardos operate out of Toronto but they would send children to the west as well to farm homes there.  I am unsure where their records are held.

Lisgar is between Winnipeg and Brandon Manitoba, just off Hwy #1 (the Trans-Canada). If Ernest fought in the great war, his (similarly for his brother's) WW1 service file would be available at the Canadian national archives. These files would have some useful info in them for you

Before you go on...  :) We already have many, many, threads on this subject from jake ( r.i.p.) and I am sure you've posted on this as well on other threads, as that is how you found this site......We don't seek out living relatives, as there are other boards for that, we are a family HISTORY site...You are always welcome to post new queries anywhere on the site, but we'd like you to stick to one thread with one subject as we all see both boards, and it is frustrating to see people looking up work that others have already previously spent hours  researching. ( in this case, more like months, and Karen even, I believe, paid for some information as well as physically sought out the grave site while on vacation )

I'll post a few here but you can find them all by putting barnes in the search above and jake as the username

As you have the 1916 census information, there isn't much available after that...If you are looking for information on Jennie May, we might be able to help you with that, although I don't think we ever did find a marriage... You may have to wait 4 or 5 years ( 100 year) until the birth is available to find her maiden name...

Apologies.....thought if I submitted this in another format  anyone who had not seen it.....might think ...... Maybe....it's the  family I'm researching....

Where is the best place to post a search for ' living ' family members?

Yes I have posted once or twice and researched jake....though having looked at your links again (today).....still found other areas to research.... I notice that you refer to his various records (Frederick/Ernest).....though i have been unable to find them...... Any suggestions?
I know there was a reference to a will....but never found it

Believe the two brothers went into partnership and possibly purchased some land to work in 1913.....ish....

have found the photograph of Ernest Henry s grave.....

which is the best way forward to search Canadian Genealogy...with what i know ......sorry for so many questions...if i can help with british geneaology....please ask and i will do my best!

Also while I am here.....I presume he married pre 1911 ....(was marriedby1911census)

....you say  you haven't been able to find a marriage..... Obviously the marriage would help significantly.....

The 100 year rule refers to records in Canada  I believe....is this marriage  /  birth.......she was born in Scotland....however  I will still need to wait/ find a marriage certificate.......for maiden name......yes?

Please let me know if I'm approaching this the wrong way

Again apologies and thank you for any help

Emm

Here is something for you to read:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,261434.0.html

As I said though simply adding to an existing post is the best way to keep getting help when the names of the subjects haven't changed...after the 1916 census, you start working your way into the area of living descendants...Many of my ancestors lived PAST the hundred year mark. ( ack, yes, if longevity is in my genes I may well be doing this on to the mid century,  ::) ) Hopefully we have solved your mysteries by then  ;D

The 100 years from Birth is approx. as it still differs province to province...the Marriages/Deaths are less years

By the way, the couple may not have been married at 1911 census, as this information can often differ from fact...

I have read through several of the linked posts but can't remember if this was posted .... the 1921 Canada census is due to be released next year and this may be of some help to you.

I noted the possible death of Ernest in 1917 in Thompson was posted on one of the threads. This appears to be where the family was living in 1916 census (see below) and the age matches.

To clarify ....

The address for Ernest Barnes and family as Oversea has been mistranscribed by *A*. The address should be 4 7 1 Thompson (municipality)(image). The address for Frederick, who apparently would normally have lived with Ernest, is given as 4 7 1 Overseas, which signifies his deployment overeas with the CEF during WW1.

The 4 7 and 1 refer to the rural locaton of the farmland as opposed to a street address in a town or city. Township (general area) = 4, Range (this would be the road) = 7, Meridian = 1 (someone may correct me but I think this might be the nearest cross road to the range).

Ah,, persistence pays off...the "sounds like" didn't find him with surname, so I just tried ernest alone!
...so it likely was just enumerator error he was marked married in 1911...( or he was spoken for so he used the term married?)
I think we may have originally speculated she was a Brown or a Fry...I can't remember what I looked for back then, I just remember looking through tons of stuff and finding little...

EARNEST H BANNES &  JENNIE BROWN
MARRIAGE: 18/03/1914 THOMPSON
REGISTRATION # 1914,095141

There are several Jennie Brown, so to pinpoint which one she may be you may want to send for the marriage cert http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php

Apologies to LEPK as polarbear pointed out that url was posted by you earlier and I'd missed it.... welcome to rootschat by the way.  Thanks for helping on the thread.

emmguy , We have a soft heart for the wee ones sent to Canada, so we often work harder at getting them solved...Many of us have been trawling through information to see what else we can find...Of course many do not realize this as we only post what we find and if nothing is found it is so much more a thankless task.  J.J.

Sorry I'm late in coming to the thread.  I had the privilege of going to Ernest Barne's gravesite a few years ago in Miami, Manitoba.  Here is a picture of his headstone.

WOW!

How do you do it?......get all the information and remember what you have already researched

It's such a sad story though.....he died at 30,1917 and his younger brother Frederick  died aged 24 in 1918. I wonder how that must have affected him when he was fighting in France knowing his brothers wife and young children were mourning their husband/ father.....I imagine that they would have been close having 'found' each other again in Canada and then undertaking a farming project together.

The grave stone says 30, the death certificate says age...28..... Any idea for the
discrepancy ?....or ' just one of those things'

Thank you    Emm
