I am just looking at William Ellingworth on the census.
He was born about 1833 in Oakham, Rutland and is one of my loose ends.
I have followed him on the census and each time he says his wife is called Fanny.
On freebmd for the March quarter of 1846 there is a William Ellingworth marrying an Elizabeth Brown.
Do you think I have the wrong marriage or Fanny is just a pet name?
Never come across this before ???
-
If he was born in 1833 and married in 1846 - this means he was only 13 when he married :o
Have you discounted William Ellingworth and Fanny Goodliff, 4th q 1855, Oakham 7a, 579?
-
Is he with a wife in 1851? If not that eliminates the 1846 marriage anyway.
Added: Are his parents Seth and Ann, if so he is single in 1851.
-
On the 1861 census Fannys brother is living with them - Tom Goodliff. So the marriage to Fanny Goodliff would be correct.

I might have my records mixed up a bit.
According to my family tree programme his folks were William and Elizabeth Ellingworth (formerly Dexter).
I had his year of birth down as 1828. On the census it says 1833.
As I said this is one of my many loose ends and I may have got things a bit wrong ???
-
Is this is the family in 1851
HO107; Piece: 2092; Folio: 269; Page: 29
Seth Ellingworth 45 Brickmaker's Labr Eaton, Leicestershire
Ann Ellingworth 36 Burley, Rutland
William Ellingworth 18 Brickmaker's Labr Oakham, Rutland,
James Ellingworth 12 Oakham, Rutland,
Sarah Ellingworth 9 Oakham, Rutland,
John Ellingworth 2 Oakham, Rutland,
A tree on Ancestry has Ann as Elizabeth Springthorpe.
The William married to Fanny had a son called Seth born 1870, which I would think links him to this family.

Familysearch has an extracted record of a William Ellingworth marrying an Elizabeth Eatt 14 Sept 1835 Rutland.
It also has a William Ellingworth marrying Elizabeth Dexter 11 Sept 1820, so perhaps that is where your record came from.
-
I think I need to go through all my records to find out where I went wrong ???
-
According to my family tree programme his folks were William and Elizabeth Ellingworth (formerly Dexter).
I had his year of birth down as 1828.
There is a baptism for a William Ellingworth @ Oakham - 30 Mar 1828, s/o William & Elizabeth, abode Oakham, father's occ Labourer.
There are also other children baptised for this couple along with what looks like two other couples by the name Ellingworth baptising children around the same time.
I didn't include them all here in case it just adds to the confusion, but just say if you want them.
-
Do you have any of William & Fanny's children? Do you have a birth certificate for one of their children to establish the mother's name, i.e. maiden name?
-
That sounds like the William I'm trying to sort out.
-
According to my records William and Fanny's children were all born in Oakham and were;
Henry (1857)
Lucy (1859)
William G (1862)
Violet A (1864)
Clara (1866)
Fanny (1869)
Seth (1870)
Frank (1873)
All birth years are from the census they may not be spot on.

According to my family tree programme his folks were William and Elizabeth Ellingworth (formerly Dexter).
What documentary evidence do you have to link the William Ellingworth you are looking at in the census with William Ellingworth and Elizabeth (Dexter)?
-
I think you need to get William and Fanny's marriage certificate as that will confirm their fathers' names. As I said earlier, the fact they have a child called Seth makes me suspect they are linked to the family I gave you in 1851.
-
As I see it you have two choices - take a chance and get the marriage certificate of William and Fanny Goodliff, which looks the most likely,
OR
firstly get the birth certificate of one of William & Fanny's children to confirm that she is Fanny Goodliff, and then the marriage cert to confirm their father's names.
-
I'll sort it out, thanks :)
-
Please let us know the outcome, once you establish the father of the William with wife shown as Fanny we may be able to help you go further back.
There are certainly Ellingworth names in earlier Oakham records that may be connected.
-
It may take me a while but I will get back to you.
