Where in Co. Cork did the marriage take place ?
Most of the births are before the start of civil records in 1864, so you will need to check for baptisms, which require knowing the parish, and denomination. (Since the marriage seems to be registered then it's non-Catholic..)
Maybe start the search with Louisa to try to narrow down the location...
see : Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)

not sure if this fits - but the parents names match with a little variation ...an RC baptism in St. Finbarr's RC , Cork City for an Anne Thornell on 13th Dec 1859 with parents John Thornell and Margt. Moore.. see : link (http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/7638b80105601) (IrishGenealogy.ie)
Maybe it was a mixed marriage and some children were baptized RC and others CofI ?

That is the details i have from IGI
On Williams Marriage Certificate it says the following;
William as Laborer aged 28 residing at Longbush Invercargill born Cork, Ireland. His Parents are John Thornhill a Clerk and Margaret Thornhill maiden surname Moore.
Sorry all i have is Cork. I thought the Civil Registration bit may have been important so included it.

That marriage definitely helps your search but this type of extracted record doesnt include all the details that would be on the cert or register.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FG62-2C9
A civil marriage cert would show the name of the church or registry office, and also should include residences for the bride and groom, father's names & occupations, names of two witnesses and name of the priest/minister/registrar.
These look like the index details in case you wish to order a cert :
Name: John Thornhill
Registration district: Cork
Event type: Marriage
Year: 1855
Volume: 4 / Page: 538
A Margaret Moore is listed on the Index with the same references.
Cork registration district covers the city but also quite a wide area of the county - e.g. towns such as Watergrasshill, Glanmire, Queenstown(Cobh), Blarney etc
see : Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433040.0.html)
Details included on a Marriage Cert (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433042.0.html)

Hello all
I live in Brisbane Australia. I have traced one of the branches of my family tree back to a William Thornhill born in Kildorrery, Ireland in 1851. He migrated to Brisbane, Australia, married here in 1875 and died here in 1900. He was one of my Great Grand-fathers. I have and can obtain more about this Australian connection if anyone is interested.
My enquiry is as follows. It has become part of my family's folklore that the Thornhills from Kildorrery descended from the Thornhills who lived at Thornhill Hall in West Yorkshire. However, I can find no evidence of this. I know that a female Thornhill living at Thornhill Hall married a member of the Saville family in the 1300s and from that event the link between the Thornhill name and Thornhill Hall ended. Can anyone throw any light on the link? Is there any documentary evidence to support the connection?
I note in the discussion on this site that a researcher has been investigating the Thornhill family in Cork Co. I'm not a member of any social media group (I think social media arrived too late for my age) and so cannot contact him directly. However, if he is still following these posts, I would gladly pay him for researching my branch of the Thornhills back beyond where I have got to.
Any assistance in this regard would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, William2912 (Bill)

I am new to this forum and not sure how to proceed. I was born in Kildorrery County Cork and have researched the Thornhill family from there. I note that William2912 (Bill) from Brisbane has been looking for information which I am happy to share.
my gmail.com user name is carey.thornhill
I believe he is correct about the Yorkshire connection, it is a long story, via Derbyshire.
Bill's great-great grandfather's father was William Thornhill (1818-1885). He married Mary Anne Daly in 1842. The family went to Australia in 1863, with 3 sons and 2 daughters. There was sickness on board and the girls died at sea.
William's father was St. John Thornhill (1797-1873, my g-g grandfather). His mother was Elizabeth Courtney from Ballyhea in North Cork.

I do have a lot of birth date discrepancies with the 1st George Thornhill and wives (the Mary's) can be confusing. I'm also trying to figure out how they all fit in with the rest of the Cork Co. Thornhill's.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

1)Have you found the marriage of George Thornhill who married Mary Bailey. The dates you have show him as having a child at the age of 15. While of course this is physically possible...Are the dates correct?
2) have you found the family coming to the US and later US Census information?

Thank you everyone one for the help.
To answer Shanreagh's questions, I've never been sure about George Thornhill's birthdate. the U.S. Census has him being born in 1795 and then 1800 and then 1810. So it's all over the place. 1795 makes more sense. The family immigrated during the potato Famine in 1848 to New Jersey. I have a lot of information on them in the U.S., just not in Ireland.
Thank you to Kiltaglassan for the suggested websites, I'm delving into the sites now.
Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hello Thornhill Family of Cork
I am wondering whether you have any record for Mary Anne Thornhill 1794-1877. I know she is buried at Aghern in East Cork as I have seen her gravestone, erected by son Thomas who kept the family farm nearby. She married Richard Burke, also buried there (as is Thomas). I don't know when they married, or where. I know their children. Francis, one of the younger sons is my twice great grandfather. However I have no knowledge of Mary Anne and her Thornhill origins.
