I have found a marriage for Laurence V Alvis and Helga Neemoja (Estonian?) in Sept quarter of 1949
I have found children born 1954 in Plymouth (?) and 1957 in Bournemouth
I can find no Birth for Laurence senior who was known as Larry or any marriages for his children - can anyone help please?

And he arrived in the UK a few years earlier:
31st August 1945 on SS Scythia (Cunard White Star)
From Bombay to Liverpool
Alvis, Laurence F 1st Class age 33 Surgeon Dentist
Proposed address: Turner Dental College, Manchester University
Previously resident in India
Family also appear, returning from Far East, in 1959.
Laurence's DOB given as 30th January 1913
Wife's dob given as 23rd April 1914

Thank you for this - still can't trace a birth for him.... - they all could have moved abroad I suppose.

My guess would be that he was born in India?
Would there be any records from Manchester University, I wonder?
Or maybe the British Dental Association?

No more info really but I've found the family leaving England in 1958,
Ship: Chusan
London to Singapore
Departure: 23 December 1958
Bound for: Yokohama, Japan
so just a short visit abroad that time.

As the events are recent I have sent a PM regarding Obituarys etc.
To work backwards it would be worth getting the marriage certificate of Laurence and Helga to find his their father's names.

Apologies, but i only came across this post a few days ago (only 4 & 1/2 years after you posted it).
You have probably resolved this query about the father and ancestry of Laurence Francis Alvis.
If not, here are a few facts, which may assist:
* Laurence Daniel Alvis was born in Colombo, Ceylon, 30 Jan 1913.
* He travelled and lived in Ceylon, India, England and finally Australia.
* His father, Laurence Justin Daniel Alvis was born in Ceylon, 5 Sep 1871 and died 25 Feb 1942.
* His grandfather was Francis Daniel Alvis 1829-1896.
* His son is Laurence Victor Alvis, living in Melbourne and CEO of the Uniting Church ReGen (you can google or see him on Youtube.
* The family lived on Valkstone Rd, East Bentleigh (Melbourne), from the 1960's-1980's. Ironically this is around the corner from where i live.
* Laurence and his family are distant cousins of mine and are on my family tree.
