Title: Catherine Greig, 1841 Census?
Post by: Torwoodlee on Wednesday 04 April 12 21:38 BST (UK)
Hello

I'm trying to find my great great great grandmother, Catherine Greig, in the 1841 census without any luck.  I have found her from the 1851 onwards.  In the 1851 census she was fifteen years old living with her mother, Ann Greig (widow, 43 years of age), her thirteen year old brother James and her sister Elizabeth who was eight.  Catherine's father should be in the 1841 census and his name was William Greig.  From the 1851 onwards, they lived in Tillicoultry, however, Catherine and her siblings were born in Denny, Stirlingshire.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

BordersLass :)

Logically - they should be in Stirling in 1841 as Elizabeth was born there in 1843 but I can't see any obvious entry for them

Hi there

I have found this one, not sure where Ann is though. Will look for her after posting this to see what you think

1841 Scotland Census, living 478 Herbert Mine Row, Dunipace, Stirlingshire

William Greig 40 - Woolmerln worker (it is spelt like that) b. scotland
William Greig 35 b. scotland
Jean Greig 10 b. scotland (sorry it is all it has)
George Greig 10 (oooh twins :) b. scotland
Kathrine Greig 4 b. stirlingshire
James Greig 2 b. stirlingshire
James Gonerig 70 b. scotland (mistranscribed should be Greig)

Parish = Dunipace  /   ED 2 /   page 18  /  line = 820

Any good ???

will see if I can find Ann and see where she was that night :)

Possibility

1841 - living 46 High St, Perthshire

James Moncrief 50 b. Perthshire
Mrs Moncrief 33  (thought this could be Ann?????) b. Perthshire
Jean Napier 8 b. Perthshire
Margret Wright 15 b. Perthshire

Parish = Perth   /    ED 4A   /   Page 8   /   Line 960

shame it doesn't say relationship on the 1841's - may not be her, will see what else I can see.

Hi all  :)

Possibly a better transcription on freeCEN -

William Grieg 40 wool mill worker born Outside Census County
Mrs Grieg 35 b. OCC
Jean Grieg 10 b. OCC
George Grieg 10 b. OCC
Kathrine Grieg 4 b. Stirlingshire
James Grieg 2 b. Stirlingshire
James Moncreif 70 Independent b. OCC

Down as Grieg rather than Greig. You might want to check the original on SP

SP has -

Ann Greig(other surname Moncrieff) death 1873 Tillicoultry Clackmannan , born c1808

Wonder if James Moncreif in 1841 is Ann Greig's father ?

I can see why I had troubles finding them considering they were OCC.  I'll get on to SP to retrieve the documents.  Thank you very much to all of you who have helped!
