Title: CAIRNDUFF 1930s SOUTHSEA/PORTSMOUTH
Post by: sandgrounder on Tuesday 17 May 05 18:43 BST (UK)
I'm trying, with no success, to find out what happened to a Sophie or Sophia Cairnduff (born 1900). She was married to David Cairnduff, from Scotland, a stoker in the Navy and they lived in Southsea and Landport in the 1920s and 30s. They had four children, Margaret, Gordon, Helen (Nellie) and David. Both the sons died, one recently, one in infancy, but I traced the daughters a few years ago. They told me that their mother had had an affair, their father had found out and packed the children off to live with his mother in Glasgow and that was the last they saw or heard of their mother. As far as I know this was going on whilst he was stationed in Malta and must have been sometime in the 1930s. They weren't divorced and David died in the early 1940s.
I have looked through some years, but not all yet, deaths and marriages but haven't found Sophie. My fear is that she became someone's common law wife, took his name, and her death was registered in that name - in which case I'm never going to find her! All suggestions welcomed.
Thanks in advance,
Judith
