Title: NANSI RICHARDS famous Welsh harpist
Post by: Malcolm Butcher on Sunday 08 April 12 17:29 BST (UK)
Old family legend has it that Nansi (not her real name) is a distant relation.  I believe she lived at or near Pentbontfawr.  Does anybody else have connections that will help me prove or disprove this story?

Hi

I presume hat you've got these links :

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/walesonair/database/nansi2.shtml

and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nansi_Richards

Born 14th May 1888 - I'll try to find her on the 1891.

gnu

PS - I think Penybontfawr is in Montgomeryshire

Thank you.  I had seen a booklet similar to your first link but can't remember where.  The two tales on the Wiki page are often spoken of.  What was her real name?

Nancy/Nansi is usually a pet name for Ann or Agnes - but she could have used it just as a professional name without any connection to her real name :-\

Just found a reference to 'Penybont, the farm where Nansi was born'

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0l43/

Which suggests that the 1901 census (Mary)* might be her.

Will do a bit more exploring.

* later discovered that it was her sister Jane Anne = Nanne = Nansi

A bit more about the family:

Probate
Thomas Richards of The Farm, Penybontfawr, Pennant, Montgomeryshire died 14 June 1930
Probate granted at Shrewsbury on 12 August 1930  to Anne Richards, widow.

You'll need to go back a few posts (Reply #9)  to read all that I've found, Malcolm  :-X

Gnu, I don't know where you have found all this information but it's fantastic.  I have been away from the computer watching Antiques Roadshow and you seem to have been solving my family tree issues.  Thank you very much.  I'll get on the case.  I like to go to the Record Offices when I can, so I can feel a trip to Ruthin coming on.  Perhaps I'll get her birth certificate first, though.

Thanks again,

malcolm

Hi Malcolm  :)

I was watching a bit of ARS too - did you see the attic floor boards  :o :o

Then I  watched a bit of the Masters and now I'm watching a QI repeat  ;D

I'm incommoded at the moment so I'm being a (multitasking) lady with a laptop on the sofa with a tele  :)

What I really wanted to say was that most of the records will be at the Powys Archives. Oswestry Local Studies Library might have some info too.

Enjoy your ancestral  searching - I do whether they're mine or not  ;)

I am also a relative of Nansi. She was an aunt of mine, but I am unsure about how many "Greats" should go in front ! My mother is probably now one of the most senior relatives around today. I will check out what she can add on here. It would be great to find new family !
Rest assured that her harp prowess, including ability to play the triple harp, has been passed on through my family via my 2nd cousins.

Hello all,

I've just found this fascinating discussion - thankyou all.

I've requested the "Breakfast" programme on Radio 3 to put a pin in Penybontfawr on their music map of Britain, on Nansi's account. An extract from my email:
" For ten years we lived half a field away from Penybont Farm (Pron: pen-uh-bont) and her name is still much admired in the area - I don't know most of them but she has surviving relatives. Apparently in the 1920s during one of her world tours she was at breakfast with the Kellog family; they were about to introduce a new breakfast food called cornflakes and she pointed out the similarity between "Kellog" and "ceiliog" (Pron: kayliog) which is Welsh for cockerel, hence the picture on the cornflakes packet!"

In all that time it didn't emerge that Nansi was her stage name. Very surprising...

Regards Ant

Hello all,

Nansi Richards on Radio 3 on the 8th of July - I suggested it for their "pin in the map" scheme
for musicians around the country. You can hear it for a week on BBC iPlayer:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b036j0ln
where you can see the details of the record of The Ash Grove by Nansi Richards, and it can all
be heard if you play it starting at 37'47" from the start at 0630.

 For the map:

http://r3maps.herokuapp.com/?
and put in the postcode. It also shows the other information I put in, about Kellogs for
instance.

I'll give it a short while then see if they'll do the same for the Choir!

Regards, Ant G0AJA

Hi Ladymerle,

First of all I have to tell you that a lot has happened in the (almost) six years since I looked at this, and I have not moved on with it, but thank you very much for getting back in touch.  I would love to see the information you have and to see exactly where Nansi fits into my tree. I suspect that Nansi's father and my 2 x great grandfather (Richard Richards - b. 1831 at Pwll Pridd, Llanrhaedr) were brothers, but I haven't got close to proving this.
