Title: Duffy from Tullamore, Ireland
Post by: ElmTree on Monday 09 April 12 13:21 BST (UK)
We are looking for the Duffy family from Tullamore.

John Duffy was born in Tullamore, Ireland around 1841. We know his father was James Duffy and his mother's maiden name was Flinn.
John joined the army, married a Welsh girl and lived in Scotland until she died in 1881.
We think John then married Bridget Booth in 1884 in Tullamore and they had a son John Duffy born in 1886.

Does anyone recognise these family names from Tullamore,Offaly

With thanks Amle

Hello Amie,

if you don't already have it - here is the marriage index information for the 1886 marriage:

Tullamore July -September 1884 volume 3 pg 467

John Duffy and Bridget Booth are possible spouses

1901 census Tullamore has John Duffy with grandmother Ann Boothe. I am sure you have this.
Ann B is born abt 1851 which would make her younger than her John Duffy snr.
I know that there were often large age gaps between spouses but as you have said you 'think' your John married Bridget, I just wanted to mention it.

I think it maybe a younger wife as it was John's second marriage, he was a widower with a young son. I can not find anything out about Bridget or Ann though.

You would find Bridget's father from the marriage certificate - you already have her mother Anne in the census.

You might be able to get the marriage details from Scottish records.
Was the older child, William James born Ayr?
If so, his birth details would give you Ann's maiden name.

I think Find My Past, which is a  subscription site, has military records. You might be able to find out more about John perhaps.

I have John's first marriage, it is to a Welsh lass Martha Hays and William James is from that marriage. I think we have worked out the family of Martha pretty well.
As you say I may have to get John and Bridget's marriage cert. I think I was trying to link them up more positively. William James always said he was an only child.

I must have the wrong William James then as he is with a mother Ann. (I thought you called her Ann before, not Martha)

Was William James raised by his Hays family? He may have lost contact with his father.

It seems that you  need to get the marriage certificate for John and Bridget to compare father's names and also the occupation of John which may help.

Sorry Heywood
Martha was the first wife. Then I believe Bridget. I have found Ann Boothe on the 1901 census she was grand mother to a John and a James Duffy. John Duffy was born c1886. John is possibly a son of John and Bridget but James birth is recorded as c 1889 when Bridget's husband John had died in 1887. Of course James could be a son of another of Ann's children, a cousin to John. Is it the 1901 census you have seen? I think it says grandmother!

So I have Ann Boothe whose daughter Martha married John Duffy who had a son John. I thought if anyone had any information on the Duffy family I could link them up somehow but perhaps we should start with Martha and John's marriage as you say.
With thanks Amle

William James Duffy is recorded on the 1881 census in Ayr  with mother Ann. We do not know why but Martha was his mother and she died just a couple of days after the census was conducted, so may have been an error.

I think some of your names are a bit mixed up there.

1881 - Ann (should be Martha) is in Ayr with William James.
She is a Private Soldier's wife 61st Brigade Depot.

Presumably you have this marriage info as you have John Duffy's parents.

1901 Tullamore
Anne Boothe is grandmother to John 15 yrs and Joseph 12 yrs.

You say that John Duffy died 1887 - do you have that death certificate?

Are you trying to confirm that the two Johns are the same person?

Bridget and John's marriage is the opening perhaps.

I have just seen a post of yours (I assume) on another forum. You have the information which connects these people apart from the marriage certificate which would give you John Duffy's father's name and hopefully that would tie everything up.

Apologies if I have confused you.
Yes that is right.

How do you get a marriage certificate from Ireland? That will have to be my first thing. It is a bit tenuous but probably worth a try. I do have the death certificate of John Duffy in 1887 in Tullamore. Bridget is the informant. I also have the birth certificate of John born 1886. That records mothers maiden name as Bridget Duffy formerly Booth. my problem is William James born 1875 in Ayr was thought to be an only child and we were unaware of a second marriage. I am just trying to confirm what I know and was hoping there might be other members of the Duffy family out there, my apologies

It does get confusing doesn't it when all these names are being bandied around.
Perhaps William James wasn't raised any further by his father and if that was his father who died just a few years later, he may not have known he had siblings or about the second marriage.

http://www.groireland.ie/  has all the details about obtaining a marriage certificate.

There is also http://www.rootsireland.ie/ (purchasing credits). Bridget Booth, you would imagine, is not as common a name as John Duffy so you may be able to find the marriage there.

Thanks seanmac

I have now seen the marriage of Bridget and John Duffy who married in 1884. They were only married three years before he died and I have found three children James born 1884, John 1886 and Joseph 1887 all in Tullamore. This must be the right marriage.
Bridgets parents were John and Ann Booth. Bridget was just 20 years when she married. So maybe married again

I'm glad you have it sorted out now.
It looks as though Anne Boothe died in 1904.
best wishes

Elm Tree : Your original query re Duffys in Tullamore.  There are at least two Duffy families still living in Tullamore who have long roots in the town -one of those is alluded to in Seanmac's gravestone photographs and I remember that man as 'Grandad Duffy'

I somehow have to link my John Duffy up. I know very little, he was born around 1841, he was the son of James and lived in Tullamore where he died. He was a catholic and he died  in 1887.
John Duffy had three sons  all born in Tullamore
James born 1884
John born 1886
and Joseph born seven months after his fathers death in 1887.
Where do we find parish records for Tullamore? I would like to link him up with the recent burials, any suggestions?
With thanks
