Title: Ashforth family of Sheffield/Derbyshire
Post by: mrs.mousie on Monday 09 April 12 16:19 BST (UK)
Hello

I've just joined today!

I've been trying to find more out about the Ashforth family who are on my paternal side of the family. I think they originated from Scholes nr Sheffield & they sent a son to live with relatives in Marlpool in Derbyshire, which started the Derbyshire connection (1800,s late?). I know Ashforth Avenue in Marlpool is named after them too. I'm particularly interested in finding out more about the Sheffield side if anyone can help at all.

Many thanks!

Hi Mrs Mousie,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Can you give us a bit more information and names for  the individuals that you are seeking, and I am sure you will then get plenty of help!

Best wishes,

Many thanks for the welcome Copperbeech5, very much appreciated!

I know there was a Hannah Ashforth (this was her married name) who was born in Scholes, Yorkshire in 1773, I think this makes her my Grandma x4. I would love to know her husband's name. Her son John married a lady called Sophia (nee Spray) from Heanor, Derbyshire and had at least 7 children, one of whom (William (Spray) Ashforth) was sent to live with her sister and her husband in Marlpool Derbyshire (Thomas and Hagar (nee Spray) Copestake).  William had a son called John who married Emily Hallam, who had 7 children including Dolly my Grandma who was killed before I was born.

Any other information anyone can provide with the Ashforth name, Scholes connection, Spray or Copestake names - I would be eternally grateful for!!

Many thanks.

Hi Mrs M,

Having just check Freebmd, between Sept 1837 - Dec 1841 there are 2 deaths for Ashforths in Rotherham (I think that is the correct area)   John and  George.

Not that that proves anything, and at the moment, that is all I can come up with.  No Husband appears on either the 1841C or the 1851C - Hannah is a widow on both.

Someone else, might well have Parish records and I have no doubt will look for you.  I have looked on Family Search.org, and nothing there either.

Best wishes,
Copperbeech5

Hi CB5

thank you for checking, I do appreciate it.

I randomly googled a couple of  Ashforth names last night and ended up on an Australian family tree website of a lady who has literally traced every single relative of hers ever (seems like thousands!)! They are my Ashforth's and Sprays, she has some gaps which I can help her with, so I will probably email her and see if we can share info. But she has no knowledge of Hannah Ashforth either.

Oh well!

Henry ASHFORTH Christened 31 December 1815, Wentworth, York, England
Parents JOHN/HANNAH
(Familysearch.Org)

Hannah is living with  Henry 1841/1851 Census.

Do you have your Johns Marriage Cert to Sophia?
It will have his Fathers name/occp.

Now I googled Scholes and it is near Wentworth Woodhouse.

I did notice a Tree with her being the Mother of  Caroline 1832/Henry 1836 who are with her on the 1841 Census. I laughed she would be too old!
They must be the Children of another Child of hers.

I think it is possibly a JOSEPH;

Possible Marriage;
John ASHFORTH
Hannah HEATON,
07 March 1791, Rotherham, Yorkshire.

Another part I'm struggling with is finding out more about...

John William Ashforth (born c.1882) and his spouse Emily Hallam (born c.1882), I think they had about 7 children, I've found Madge (born 1911), but I can't locate Dolly (assuming this is her real name and not a nickname), Vera, Stella, Annie, Jack and I think there was a Geoffrey.

Thank you if you can help!

Hi my Great Great Great Grandparents were John and Sophia Ashforth from Scholes in Rotherham.
My Great Great Grandad was their son John who married Mary Ann and my Great Grandad was their son Levi Ashforth.
I read that there is a street named after them I never knew this. I would love to hear more! It would be interesting to share information.

FishForth 😊
