For others trying to help;
Marriage;
William DOWLING
Sarah LUFFMAN
23 July 1798, Broughton, Hampshire
Do you have a date of death for Sarah?
Was William with his son Henry (Occp Gardener) in St Mary Hampshire. 1841/1851? Born c 1772 Lockerley, Hampshire according to the 1851 Census?
Children of William/Sarah christened Lockerley;
Henry 1799, Mary/William 1805 (Twins), Fanny 1810, Moses 1812, Ann 1814, Elizabeth 1816, James 1817, John 1819

IGI has a Sarah LUFFMAN, Christened 13 March 1771,
St Marys, Portsea, Hampshire, Father WILLIAM Luffman
(Extracted Record)
There is also a Submitted Record, 15 September 1776, Eling, Hampshire,
Mother ANN Luffman
Both would be of the right age to Marry 1798.
We need age Burial Record if possible, someone on here may be able to help, to establish a possible DOB for Sarah.

I have burial records for two Sarah Luffman's in the right era; viz: 18th May 1803 Fawley, and 7th May 1822 Southampton St. Mary. I had forgotten about those Llandinam, sorry, this posting jogged my memory.

Is that Sarah Luffman or Dowling?

Both Sarah Luffman, should of course be Dowling; sorry!

Thank you both of you. Came back from the dentist to find all this information. Yes this is my family. Moses was my Gt.Gt Grandfather, and all I had been able to find was his father,s name William and that he married a Sarah. Then found a William Dowling and Sarah Luffman marriage. I am so pleased to have a link with the Luffmans with the history that they are an old Hants family going back so far. I like to know about my ancesters lives, not just a collection of dates and names.. You mentioned his being a gardener in St.Marys, is that St.Marys Bourne please Trish. Thank you once again both of you. Hope I can help you sometime.

There is another possiblity for Sarah:
Sarah Luffman, daughter of William & Rebecca, baptised 26 Aug 1781, Kings Somborne. This is a little closer to Lockerly than Portsea, although the northern edge of Eling parish is not that far distant.
Sarah had died by 1851 (William was in Southampton parish of St. Mary at that time). I'm not having much luck tracing William and possibly Sarah in 1841.

Hi Llandinam,
1851 it is Monument Road ?, Southampton St Mary Extra.
William as a Master Gardener/Henry a Gardener employing 2 Men
1841 it is Woolston, St Mary Extra(under Dawling), William down as a Labourer/Henry as a Gardener.

Thank you Trish, I am finally making some progress, now I will have to see where we go next.I would like to find out where Henry worked. I know that Caleb son of Moses had a market garden so have plenty of fun ahead. Good luck with your searches. Llandinam

Hi, Noticed this thread. I have Sarah Luffman in my family tree. She was born in Whiteparish (where there are generations of Luffmans going back to 1560's) to labourer Robert Luffman (1749-1833) and his wife Ann Phillips. They had children Robert 1773, John 1775, Sarah 1777 (who died same year), your Sarah 1778, William 1781 and James 1785, all baptised in Whiteparish. Soon afterwards, the family possibly moved to Broughton and eventually Robert and Ann settled in West Tytherley, where Ann was buried in 1837. Hence Sarah was in the vicinity to marry William Dowling in 1798.
Hope this helps!

I believe the Luffman's are all one tribe. I had a DNA Y chromosome connection to Whiteparish, and descend directly from the Dorset/Somerset line with a direct connection to John Luffman believed b Henstridge 1776. Unfortunately if this is him the paperwork doesn't yet stack up as he was illegitimate.
