Title: George Kerr of Rosebank
Post by: Jamjar on Thursday 12 April 12 11:08 BST (UK)
The following is on a headstone in Lochmaben cemetery. George Kerr the joiner of Rosebank is my line.

I just want to be sure that I understand correctly. "Also George son of the above who died 20th
December, 1808 aged 72 years." Is that referring to the George of Rosebank and that this George had the wife Christina Burgess.

Jamjar

"To the memory of Thomas Kerr in Esbie who died January 26th, 1764 aged 75
years. Also Jannet Sandert his spouse who died May 4th 1767 aged 75 years.
Also Thomas, Robert and Elizabeth, Thomas and James all children to George
Kerr joiner in Rosebank. Also George son of the above who died 20th
December, 1808 aged 72 years. Also Christina Burgess his spouse who died at
Lochmaben 19th December, 1819 aged 77 years. Also William Kerr son of John
Kerr who died --- 1817 aged 12 years, and Jean Kerr his daughter who died
10th March 1833 aged 16 years. Also Helen Bell spouse to the said John Kerr
who died 13 January, 1833 aged 50 or 56 years. Also Jean and Christina their
daughters - Jean died at Lockerby March 1837 aged 14 years and Christina
died at Ohio, America August 1835 aged 21 years. George Bell their son also
died in America aged 31 years."

Hi Jamjar

There is at least one actual extract index entry on IGI:

Elizabeth KER chr. 15 JUN 1766 in Lochmaben. Parents George KER and Christine BURGESS

Also a member submitted entry for a son Thomas, b. 1768, d. before 1774.

Maybe SP would have more indexed entries from the OPRs for their children?

Monica  :)

Thanks Monica,

My Janet is there also.

What I really want to know at the moment is that I am interpreting the headstone correctly.

There is something not right with the Janet Kerr's on that link.

Janet Kerr married Joseph Jardine and died in Canada.

Sorry  :P you are right, main question being is the George, married to Christina, the son of Thomas first mentioned...

I think yes he is, from the way the inscription is worded.

Added: You could try contacting the tree owner to see where s/he got the info for Janet perhaps?

Thanks, Monica.

The tree owner was contacted and they have built their information on information found from other websites, not original sources.

Lochmaben Church

In memory of John KERR in Old Esbie who died August 18 1777 aged 72  Also Janet Rogerson his spouse who died July 18 1770 age 63 years Also John and James his sons who died young. Also his daughter Margaret who died 15 December 1774 age 16.

That would be nice. Would be the furtherest back of any of the research thus far.

Is there any way of proving it?

Not sure about proving it, though :-\.

From the headstone inscription Thomas Kerr & Jannet Standert  were George’s parents. Thomas died in Esbie January 26 1764 age 75.  The John I found died Old Esbie August 18 1777. So, Thomas would have been born 1689 and John  born 1705 – 16 years difference.

George KERR and Christina Burgess first born was a son - John b. 1770.  Their daughter Janet was born at Old Esbie 1771. They also had a son James b. 1773. The names seem to follow through.

Just a thought. Thomas Kerr must have been 47 and Jannet Sandert 44 when George KERR was born.

Sounds very likely, then.

It possible that the ages on the headstone was out a tad.

Any church records for the Kerr marriages?

Do we know where Old Esbie and Esbie were/are?

We don't know where or when George & Christina were married. I would guess around 1769, as their son John was born in 1770.

I'll see what I can find on Old Esbie and Esbie. Think it is between Lochmaben & Lockerbie.

Esbie Farm still exists and Is up the road from the bungalow.

I phoned the number for Esbie Farm and spoke a lady. She didn't seem to know an awful lot except, some of the buildings on the farm are no longer there. She said to phone her sister-in -law who may be able to help me, as she does family tree things.

As yet, I have not managed to get her on the phone. Will get back to you if there is anything to report.

Excellent.

Just had a flash of us meeting someone - larger lady -  in a coffee shop in Lochmaben who was into family history and for some reason think she may have been from Esbie.

Just found this. If you go left from the bungalow  and travel a short distance, this is on the left.

That's a pity we didn't know about Esbie, then.

However, I have just phoned the Esbie Farm number and said I hadn't been able to get her sister-in-law, the reason being, she is in Newcastle. She has my number now.Would be nice if she could give us some information. :)

The womas husband seems to think that Old Esbie, was a house on the farm ground, which is no longer there. I think it will be still worth going to take photographs, though. Will give you the feel of the place and where Janet KERR was born. The lady said there was no problem with that.

On the monumental Inscription it has - Also Thomas, Robert and Elizabeth, Thomas and James all children to George
Kerr joiner in Rosebank.

So, there was a Robert who may have been named from Christina BURGESS :-\.
