Title: Laura Mercy Amelia Nightingale/Gardner/Dawson
Post by: lgardner2000 on Friday 13 April 12 14:03 BST (UK)
hello
I am looking for any information about Laura Mercy Amelia Nightingale, she is my gt gt grandmother. She seemed to live an interesting life.
She was born 1875 Eastcote, Northamptonshire to Paul Nightingale and Sarah Kirton.

She had a daughter Elsie Rebecca in 1891.

She married Herbert Gardner 25 May 1893 Pattishall, Northants.
They had the following children:-
Florence Elizabeth 1894-1909
Percy George T 1896
Hebert Frederick J 1899
William 1900-1981 (my gt grandfather)
Olive 1904
Stanley 1905-1975

In the 1911 census she is living with a George Dawson. She is listed as a housekeeper. However they seemed to have a son together called George.

Looked at the free BMD I believe they had 3 children together
George C D Gardner b. 1911
Sarah D Gardener b. 1912
Willie D Gardner b. 1915

Both Sarah and Willie's mothers maiden name is Nightingale. I believe the D = Dawson, and that these three children were Laura's and Geroge Dawson, and were just registered under Gardner as they were not married.

I have information from her death cerificate:-
Laura Mercia Amelia Dawson, died April 7th 1939 in Northampton
Age 64, widow of George Dawson
Cause of death 1a Myocarditis & senility
Informant - George C Dawson, son.

I cannot find any record of a marriage between Laura and George or a divorce between Laura and Herbert.

Any information on Laura or any of her children would be great.
Thanks
Lisa

George Dawson died in 1935 so if the children were unaware that George & Laura never married - her son George would assume she was George's widow when he reported her death.

I would doubt that both sets of children were unaware of the others existence.  I don't know what addresses Laura & Herbert were at in 1911 or how far apart they were but it's more than likely that Laura retained contact given that her children were so young

Hi again all.

Lisa I am not sure if this will be of help.

I knew these names also rang a bell with my friend.

You seem to have more information about Laura but I will
p.m. you in case you wish to contact her to which she is agreeable.

You would need to get in touch with the Cemetery Office Lisa.

No existing gravestone (if they was one) at Billing Road.

I could look at the Kingsthorpe one later and see if I can see it.

Okay I have worked out where the grave should be.

If you go to the Cemetery and take the left hand fork after
arriving through the front gate pass the Chapel of rest
and on towards the next roundabout it is pass that and on
the left hand side just further up the hill.

If you have any problem I can always get Hubby to take me
to look for it.

I did find mention in an 1933 Electoral Roll at 13, Collins St.

George, Laura, George Charles, Sarah Dawson and Elsie Nightingale.

It may help someone else researching the family also.

I  saw my friend at Northampton Library today.

She gave me copies of 3 photographs, 2 known people and
another family group.

1. Paul Nightingale and Sarah Kirton, parents of Laura.
2. Sarah Kirton and 2 young children one boy and one girl
standing with Sarah's bobbin lace.
3. Another one which seems to have another couple in their
50's or 60's  a possible daughter and 3 grand-children?
2 boys and one girl.

Although we tried to work out the complicated life of Herbert and
Laura it seemed as though things were not as they seemed at
the time.

I have found the burial of one of the children of Herbert and Laura.

Gardner Florence Elizabeth, aged 15 years, of 37, Norfolk Street,
died 14th April buried 19th April 1909 in grave 2696.

And this seems to be another.

Gardener Richard Sidney, aged 2 years of 37, Norfolk Street,
died 5th Oct , buried 9th Oct 1906 in grave 4520.

This would be correct with a birth in the Sep Qtr 1904.

Thank you so much for infomation about Richard.
The 1911 census makes sense now. The census said they had 7 children born alive and only 5 living. I could only find 6 children, and I knew Florence had died. Thank you for that information.

How do you find all these deaths? where can I research them?

Sorry it took ages to get back to you, worked nights over the weekend. And thank you for going to cemetery for me.

Right,
I have looked at the 1911 census for Herbert Gardner which shows him with 4 children. It states he had 7 children and only 5 living.
I believe he had:-
1. Florence Elizabeth 1894-1909
2. Percy George T 1896
3. Herbert Frederick J 1899
4. William 1900-1981 (my gt grandfather)
5. Olive 1904
6. Stanley 1905-1975
And 7 Richard Sidney Gardner that Sandy has just found.

I then looked at the 1911 census for Laura Gardner who is living with George Dawson and it states that she has 10 children, and 8 living.

So there are the 7 children she had with Herbert (above) and two of them sadly had died by 1911.
I believe another child is George Charles Dawson Gardner (who she had with George Dawson).
and Elsie Rebecca Nightingale born 1891 who she had before marrying Herbert.
But who is the other child??? Cant be with Herbert as numbers dont add up!

Interesting!!!!

Hi again.

I think some of the info is not quite right.

Laura had

1. Elsie Nightingale (before marriage) 1891. Is this Herbert's child also.?
2. Florence Elizabeth 1894-1909.
3, Percy George T could be the one who dies in WW1 1896.
4. Herbert Frederick J (aka Frederick) 1899.
5. William 1900.
6. Sarah Olive 1903.
7. Richard Stanley 1904-1906.
8. Stanley Albert 1906.
9. George 1911.

There is a Betsy H M who is born in 1907 and dies in the N.G.H 1911.?

You can look at the Burial records at the Northampton Record Office, Lisa.

Hi,
It's not Betsy, found a christening for her, which lists her parents. Not Laura.
I believe the child to still be alive in 1911.

Thanks

Glad that you can discount Betsy.

I do not think there are more than 2 births and we have worked
those out Lisa.

I also now know Percy died and his brother Frederick also
served but survived.

Also photocopies of the 3 pictures.

Hi there.  Alfred Sydney Nightingale, 1882-1966, was my great-grandfather and he was the youngest of Sarah and Paul's nine children.  He married Mercy Jane Ashby and they had seven children with Dorothy, 1913-1993, being my grandmother.  I can share my tree with you if you like, maybe there is some info in there you don't have.  You definitely have a lot I didn't have.

Hello.
Sorry in delay in responding to you. Lovely to hear from you.
Yes Laura led an interesting life & still not uncovered all of it.
I haven’t looked at this for a very long time. Can’t believe it was in 2012 but a lot has happened since then.

When I get a spare moment I will dig out my family tree.
Anything you looking for in particular?

Thanks

Hello.

Trying to find information out about any of Laura’s children.

Sandy you mentioned Herbert had served in ww1 but I can’t find any records. Any info you could share please.

I know Percy died in ww1 and I have been to France and seen where he is remembered.

Now would like to find out information about
Herbert born 1899
Sarah born 1903
Stanley born 1905.

Many thanks

Hi Lisa.

I can not see where I said Herbert had served. ? There is a service record for (Herbert) Frederick on Anc *****   He served with the Lincolnshire Regiment number 43843.

If you are not aware you can find mother's surname on births prior to 1911 here after registering https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

(Herbert) Frederick Gardner is on the 1939 register which you can view on FindMyPast in the Library.
Doesn't seem to marry.

As to Stanley there is a marriage in Sep 1927 in Northampton R.D. to a Gladys Ward. Needs confirming they are who you are looking for.

Both of them appear on the 1939.

There is a burial for Stanley at Dallington Cemetery in 1973 aged 68. I can not see one for Gladys.

I think Sarah O married as Olive Gardner to a Sydney Bellamy in Jun 1922 in Northampton R.D.

They are both on the 1939 register.

Olive Sarah and Sidney are both buried in Kingsthorpe Cemetery in 1974-1977 in grave 5625 and 16673
