Her death certificate should tell you. If it does not say on the certificate itself, there may be a link to the Register of Corrected Entries which would.

When you see a reference to the register of corrected entries, you scroll down to the bottom of the page and there should be a link to it there. It is not very obvious unless you know to look for it.
-
Thanks gr2
found it on SP, it's a red box that appears at the top of the image.
sarah was struck by some part of a passenger train at dumbarton railway station. She survived 3 days with a fractured skull.

I know this says completed but I couldn't see that anyone had replied to your original request for a newspaper report. There is one in Glasgow Herald 18 January 1897:
Dumbarton – Fatal Result of an Accident – On Wednesday last a little girl named Sarah M’Curley was found on the railway near Dumbarton station injured, but on being medically attended she was able to walk home. Her case assumed a serious aspect however, and on Saturday she succumbed to her injuries.
Hope this helps

That's a great find Joyce :) Poor, poor child walking off home after the accident with a fractured skull :'(
Snooki, now that Joyce has found the entry which is always the hard part, you can view the original image for free here http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC
You cannot search by key word on this google news archive, so having dates to search by (and a lot of patience ::)) is essential.

There are no editions online for that timepoint - that's why I transcribed the version I found rather than posting a google link ;)

That's great Joyce :)

Thanks Joyce for taking the time to look for the info. It is much appreciated.
This helps in trying to paint a picture in our minds of what happened.
Very sad indeed :'(
monica

(one or two)?
also if High st 1897 is in the same place as it is now ?

Does anyone know how many railway stations in dumbarton 1897 ?
Sarah was struck by part of a passenger train at the (looks like 'west end') of dumbarton railway.
also if High St is in the same place now as it was 1897.

Snooki, you need a map nearer to the late 1890s. The lastest one for Dumbarton in the NLS collection looks to be 1859 http://maps.nls.uk/towns/index.html
Can't help sorry regarding the stations: Dumbarton East Railway Station and Dumbarton Central Station. Some bits here
http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/87969/details/dumbarton+station+road+central+station/
http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/87521/details/dumbarton+glasgow+road+east+station/
You need local/railway knowledge, on which I fail on both counts :P

Hi,
History of the Dumbarton railway line is at
http://www.railbrit.co.uk/Glasgow_Dumbarton_and_Helensburgh_Railway/body.htm#area
Originally Dumbarton to Bowling was part of the Caledonian and Dunbartonshire but was taken over by NBR

thanks for the link

Hi Snooki,
There was and is, a third station in Dumbarton. Dalreoch Station is located at the junction of the Balloch, and Helensburgh lines. The local papers are the "Lennox Herald" and "The Reporter", and both are produced weekly. I understand that the archives of the former went back to a time before the accident you refer to. The paper is no longer Dumbarton based, but part of the Scottish and Universal Newspaper Ltd Group, with a contact address at One Central Quay, Glasgow G3 8DA.
Dumbarton Library may be able to assist you as they hold archived copies of the paper.
Regards,
Istrice

Would like to post a correction re Sarah's fathers name. George is not her fathers name.
It is Charles McCurley ,Her mother is Sarah (Okane)
I did not have her as a child of the above. I believe she was born in Ireland, maybe Antrim.
I will look try to locate her grave. I posted she was not buried with her mother.
Surely being hit by a train ??? would result in a more serious injury being sustained.
