Hi Mick,
MURROE as its called runs along the border of County Limerick and Tipperary. I had never heard of the name Caplis before so i tried the 1911 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ you can also try the 1901 census but there were 98 Caplis family members in the Murroe area, all of them within 10 miles of each other, both in County Limerick and Tipperary. This is most unusual as there were none in the rest of Ireland. They must have really loved their place.
How was your grandfather allowed to go to the States !!!

Thanks PJ he must have been quick on his feet  ;D

my grandparents only live in the USA for 2 or 3 years then moved to Leigh near Manchester,  i think my dad was about 3 or 4 at this time, he had one brother john both my dad and uncle are now not with us.

I wish I had taken more notice when my dad told me about his mam and dad

me and my partner moved to Sligo in Ireland some years ago and now that I am unemployed i am going to make an effort to go to Murroe and see if any Caplis's are  still there.

Mick  :)

Hi again Mick
Tried  061 phone directory and there are 8 Caplis families still in that area especially in the Newport area . You should have no trouble linking them with yours . Try writing to them first youd never know someone might have the tree done .
Then go down there and tell them there is a big world out there     ;D

Hi

1835 Census of the United Parishes of Newport and Birdhill lists four Caplis families:-

David Caplis at Chapel Lane.  6 males + 2 females
Richard Caplis at Newross & Ahane.  3 males + 1 female
William Caplis at Newross & Ahane.   4 males + 2 females
John Caplis at Knockacullin.   4 males + 6 females

It appears Caplis were plentiful in the Newport area even in the 1830s!

Cheers

Hi
I'm doing some skulking around the Caplis family on behalf of a friend of mine.
Part of the Caplis family immigrated to Australia in the 1850s/1860/s.

I have traced back to The areas of Murroe & Boher, Limerick and Newport:

John Caples (residence Murroe) m. 04.03.1832 Newport to Catherine Casey (residence Knockanbaun)
Children:
Thomas bap 08.03.1833 Murroe & Boher (immigrates 1857)
Norry/Hanora bap 29.11.1837 Murroe & Boher (immigrates 1861)
Martin bap 12.11.1840 Murroe & Boher (immigrates 1861)
John bap 3.3.1847

Dad, John is dead by 1857 when his son, Thomas, immigrates.
Mum, Catherine immigrates in 1861 with 2 of the known children.
Immigration of all paid for by Catherine's brother, Thomas Casey (have not found when he went to Australia yet).

Am bit stuck any further back than the 1832 marriage.  Is there an 1835 census for the Murroe area?
Any of these Caples/Caplis/caplice names, places connect with anyone else?

The Christian name Martin pops up in many later generations ....

Hi James - have you done DNA testing at all? My profile is both on Ancestry and MyHeritage.
Asking as I'm a Caples (Caplice/Capless) descendent. My great grandfather * 3 leaving Newport, Tipperary at what I believe to have been a relatively early age.
Gleeson is a name that crops up as a connection DNA wise and as I try and build a wider picture of the Caples clan in the 19th century Lackamore, Toreen Brien, and Coonmoore (all close to Newport) all appear to feature heavily. My working hypothesis is that some of the farmers in these locations were either brothers or cousins but I'm yet to find a smoking gun.

Other names that appear to feature quite heavily also include Nihil and Hayes and of course Ryan. I think every other family was a Ryan ;)

The townland is likely to be Garavane, - spelt Garravane in this case- which is only a short distance away from Toureenbrien, both places in the parish of Kilcommon Rearcross and Hollyford.

I will see if I can find the  parish register entry for Catherine's marriage if it helps?  Let me know

Don't see a townland called Garavane in https://www.townlands.ie/
There is one called Garravin.

Note that the townland in the civil parish of Kilvellane is called Tooreenbrien (reply #12)
