Hi Uggy
They had a few more children than you show so adding those here just for background (names might help with later searches).
Thomas and Mary (Gardiner) married/banns on 7 July 1848 Carstairs.
Their children's entries, all in Carstairs:
1. George b. 27 Nov. 1848/ chr. 7 Dec. 1848
2. John b. 21 April 1850/ chr. 20 May 1850
3. Janet b. 4 March 1852/ chr. 24 March 1852
4. Agnes b. 1 Jan. 1854/ chr. 15 Jan. 1854
5. Thomas b. 19 May 1856
6. Mary Ann b. 8 March 1858
7. Marion b. 13 March 1860
8. William b. 10 May 1862
9. Edward Skinner b. 6 Dec. 1864
10. Helen b. 8 July 1867
11. Valentine Skinner b. 6 Sept. 1870, twin
12. Elizabeth Griffith b. 6 Sept. 1870

This looks to be Thomas and Mary in 1861:
Thos Martin 40, Coalman Labr
Mary Martin 33
George Martin 12
John Martin 11
Janet Martin 9
Agnes Martin 7
Thos Martin 5
Mary Ann Martin 3
Mary Martin 1
Address: Village Of Carstairs
The 1851 census also shows Thomas as born c. 1820/1 (aged 30 for that entry).
If he and Mary followed Scottish naming pattern, this might be his entry on IGI (member submitted so needs to be confirmed on SP):
Thomas Martin b. 3 May 1820/ chr. 7 May 1820 to George Martin and Agnes Donald in Carstairs.
This might be his family in 1841:
George Martin, 40, ag. lab
Agnes Martin, 40
Thomas Martin, 20, ag. lab.
James Martin, 8
Address: Village of Carstairs.

Uggy, from the info here www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,573735.10.html, we have the rest of the census info from Sage and also Ev has posted likely death dates for Thomas and wife Mary and more info which is great :)

Possible on Mary Gardiner, actual extract, on IGI:
Mary Gardiner chr on 2 Sept 1827 in Carstairs to John Gardiner and Janet Wilson
Possible 1841 entry for the Gardiner family. No Mary showing but she could already be out of the home working by then:
John Gardner 40, agr. lab.
Janet Gardner 40
James Gardner 15 agr. lab.
Robert Gardner 11
Janet Gardner 8
Address: Robsknowe, Carstairs
