Title: Researching Property in Caithness
Post by: Welsh terrier on Friday 20 April 12 15:58 BST (UK)
Is there a way to research who lived in a particular house without having the names of the people ?
I am trying to discover who lived in our farm.prior to 1860's.
It was rented out by a landowner whose family eventually sold on in 1950's.

Any help much appreciated

Hi WT ,

You could try the freeCEN website
It has the 1841 , 1851, and 1861 Census transcriptions for Caithness

You can do an address search on there
What information do you have ?

You could ask the North Highland Archive: contacts are given in this link:

Thank you ev, just tried freecen but came back with no results.
There is a possibilty that the farm changed it's name once out of Crown Estate hands.

You could find out from the valuation rolls. Remember that "farmer" was often used for a crofter and you can find several crofts of the same name on an estate.

I found one tenant in the 1901 Census,
Alexander Dunnet.
Civil Parish:-Olrig
address Hilliclay (farm name).

Think maybe the library the best bet ?

You may also want to try Hilly Clay , Olrig in 1851

and

Hilly Clay or Hillyclay , Olrig in 1841

You can enter Hil* on the freeCEN search , with Census place set at Olrig

Olrig is on 1841 , 1851 , 1861 , 1871 , and 1881 on freeCEN

As GR2 posted there there may have been several crofts at that location

Looks like it's under Hilliclay , Olrig in 1871/81

Hilliclay Farm House(New House (in 1871) Younger family

or

Hse at Hilliclay Farm(Old Hse - Younger family

Both heads of families joint farmers of 450 acres(brothers ?)
