Title: childs family
Post by: whiteheather on Monday 23 April 12 19:54 BST (UK)
Hi I was very pleased with the info that your researchers gave me before on this name, but since then I think I have found 13 children belonging to Thomas Childs and Edith Wooding, their dates of birth range from 1817 - 1834 and yet I can find nothing of any of them of any census, some of the children were born in cardington, or Edworth and the rest were born in Newham of which I have no idea where that is, do you think I have the right family, I would be very grateful if anyone could please help me
regards Heather

I think you need to be very careful here, as I'm pretty sure you're mixing and matching two separate families.

In addition to the 1851 family living in Newnham, Herts, there was another Thomas and Edith Childs living in Thames St, Bedford St Cuthbert in 1851:
Thomas Childs head marr 57 farm yard manager b Goldington
Edith Childs wife 56 b Bletsoe
Hephzibah Childs dau unm 26 b Cardington
James Childs son 26 unm b Cardington
George Childs son 21 unm b Bedford St Cuthbert
Mary Ann Childs dau 14 b Bedford St Cuthbert

In 1841 at Waterloo, Bedford St Cuthbert was
Thomas Childs 40
Edith Childs 40
James Childs15
Hepsebah Childs 15
George Childs 10
Sarah Childs 7
Mary Ann Childs 5
All b in Beds

Any Childs born Edworth or Newnham are the other family and nothing to do with your Thomas and Edith from Bedford/Cardington/Goldington

What a coincidence that both families were living at Waterloo in 1841! Waterloo, Newnham, Herts and Waterloo (which is probably Waterloo Rd) Bedford

Waterloo (which is probably Waterloo Rd) Bedford

Waterloo was a slum-type area along the north side of the river.  It was demolished in the 1880's when The Embankment was built.  Thames Street ran from St Cuthbert's Church south to the river (demolished and replaced by super-posh Newnham Road) and then east along the riverbank through Waterloo.  Waterloo is given as an address only in 1841, and the Waterloo properties are given as Thames Street in 1851-81, so I suspect the Childs family were at the same address in 1841 & 1851.

Hi David, thanks for clearing that up for me it was the Thomas and Edith from Thames Street that was my family, so they never had as many children as I thought, although they had William my gr.gr.grandfather in 1818, so do you think Frederick and Joseph are from another family

If Frederick and Joseph were born in Edworth or Hertfordshire, then they're not your Bedford family
