Title: Whelan
Post by: genseacher on Wednesday 25 April 12 21:45 BST (UK)

Hi
Would to hear from anyone researching Whelans from Carlow

I am researching my gg father Patrick Whelan.
Irish Census 1901/1911 states he is born Carlow.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Ushers_Quay/Thomas_Street/1303368/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Usher_s_Quay/Emerald_Square/59588/

His marriage cert is as follows
Patrick Whelan m. Anne Dwyer on 6th October 1884, Bagenalstown, Co Carlow
Patrick at time of marriage residence at Rathellen, Co Carlow, Occupation labourer
Anne at time of marriage residence Ballymoon, Co Carlow, Occupation Servant

Father of Patrick Whelan is James Whelan and occupation is listed as Labourer
Father of Anne Dwyer is Patrick Dwyer and occupation is listed as Labourer.
(Anne Dwyer's mother is Ellen Dwyer nee Doran)

Witnesses are Patrick Fenlon and Kate Whelan

I am now at a brick wall
As Patrick was born prior to 1864 its hard to pin point anything concrete
born between 1855 - 1860 (maybe according to census)

I have found out ages people say they were on the census are so far out, as researching another part of my family their ages were out approx 8 to 10 years.

My great grandmother was Bridget Whelan. Had a brother Patrick. She was born in Baltinglass but records show the family between Carlow and Wicklow. They had two other sisters Anne and (Mary) Ellen

Hi there
No I think his name was Michael. I couldn't access your links yesterday and it would seem to be different families. My g g uncle Patrick Whelan had 5 children Anne, Ellen, Elizabeth, Paddy and another son who we think was called Cyril.
Best of luck with your search.

Hi

JOhn Whelan who married Mary Anne Dargan had 2 children, Frances Whelan and John Whelan, John (jack) married Mary Kavanagh and came from Dublin to live in Dunleckney for his health., He is burried in Dunleckney Graveyard with Margaret Sheehan and Tommy Byrne.

John and Patrick were the children of Frances Sheehan (born Sept 1st 1831) and a Whelan - I guess now that is James Whelan, both form the Carlow / Rathellen area.

We are trying to figure out a connection between the Whelan / Dargan / Galligan lines. Can you help with that at all?

Hi Aideen

Many thanks for your posts. I have only seen these tonight (7th May)
Patrick Whelan brother of John Whelan was my great grandfather.

I will come back to you tomorrow evening I'm nearly sure I found another brother I think it was Edward will have to check my file.

Do you know if there were any more children of James and Frances Whelan nee Sheehan, (John, Patrick and ??? Edward) surely there were more children.

On Patrick's marriage cert to Anne Dwyer one of the witnesses is Kate Whelan, not sure who she is.

I will upload the marriage cert of Patrick and post more information and post more info tomorrow evening.

Regards and thanks

Hi Genseacher

The information I have is from the Leighlin parish records, I was tracing all Sheehan connections so I might have missed some Whelan births if the mother's maiden name was not clear. But the only Whelan's I found born of Frances Sheehan were John 1855 and Patrick 1859, if they moved to Dublin after that there may have been other births not on the Leighlin register.
Edward would be a family name, it seems Frances may have had a brother Edward too.

I'll search through the information I have gathered and upload anything I think might be relevant for your search.

That's definitely the same family Genseacher.
Have you any idea of the marriage date, it would help give a rough estimate of Edwards birth date.

Edward's brother John married a Dargan, there's a big family of them in Meath St with church records in St Catherine's and St Audeon's (most of the Dublin Church Records are available online on www.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords.

I've been down home during the summer and asked if anyone knew anything about Edward Whelan - Garyhundon is only 2 miles or so from our family home -  they weren't too sure of the names but the story I got was this,
Edward Whelan worked for the Ryan's when Alice became a widow an arrangement was made that he would marry her look after the farm and when her son (Harry) came of age he would leave.

Not sure the truth of the story but Edward is not with Henry in 1911 and it seems they have parted company -  Edward a herd still in the Nurney area and henry living in Garyhundon with another Ryan as head of the household.

Hi Aideen
Great to hear from you. Have been on hols myself so only getting around to replying to your post
Interesting story about Edward and Alicia Whelan thank you.

I think this is Edward Whelan in 1911 a widower, what do you think http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Carlow/Nurney/Cloghristick/309458/

and I also found this death for a Alicia Whelan  in 1903
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FTF7-2Y9

I wonder what happened to Fannie Whelan their daughter .

I am hoping to take a short trip to Carlow next month September, so I need to gather as much info before I go.
