Title: Paper Manufacturing Kings Mill
Post by: Mahala77 on Friday 27 April 12 13:36 BST (UK)
Can anyone help with information about a paper mill that was once located near Castle Donington (possibly at Kings Mill) Leistershire.  My relative Joseph Drake Dixon states his profession on his marriage certificate in 1845 to Grace Kirkland as paper manufacturer as did his father George Dixon and I would like to find out about the mill where they worked.

This book is a wonderful insight into the life of the brother of your ancestor which includes an engraving/picture of their birthplace and a picture of James Dixon..... you are really lucky and I am so envious!  :D

It gives a little insight into his early life, mentions his parents; was the second son of five brothers and two sisters.
Went to school in Castle Donington, but when he was ten years of age he was set to work in the Mill, of which his uncles were owners..... a lovely description of the countryside and the Mill - how the paper making began at four o'clock in the morning and at 8.20 were allowed breakfast....  :-\

Died December 28th 1871 - Bradford

You are welcome  :)

There are about 28 Dixon's listed as being buried at Castle Donington between 1821 to 1926 but these are the ones that appear to belong to your family.... although I am assuming they are all related and maybe George was married three times? the list I have for Castle Donington begin about 1813 and I think there will be some Dixon's there before that date.... :-\

The Dixons are certainly well documented and this has been so very interesting. Thank you Dizzyfish.
George Dixon had 2 wives that I know of. Hannah Barber (m) 5 October 1813 at Castle Donington and Mary Smith.
Chn by Hannah Barber - Henry Barber Dixon (chr) 29 July 1816, Mary Ann Dixon (chr) 23 January 1821 (d) 4 Feb 1821, George Drake Dixon (chr) 14 Sept 1822 (d) 8 January 1823 and my ancestor Joseph Drake Dixon (chr) 9 October 1824 (d) 6 March 1893 Adelaide South Australia. Obituary for son of Joseph Drake Dixon and Grace Kirkland - George Henry Dixon says "....grandson of the late Captain Kirkland of 27th Regiment: also nephew of Rev Dr Dixon, Nottingham..."
Looks like I have the right Dixons and also burial place for George Drake Dixon (1 year) and possibly George Dixon 1858 (74 years). :D

Hi, I have been away over the weekend so missed this thread. I live locally - about 6 miles away from CD. all CD PR's are in Loughborough library so if you need anything specific checking please ask.

i suspect as your Family seem to be well documented that there will also be more in the archive room of the library. will have a quick look next time in.

Castle Donington - The extensive manufactory called the King's Mills, in this Parish, has been closed, and the machinery disposed of. It is reported that no more paper will be made here, and although it is the matter of regret that so many are thrown out of employ, the character of the work was so objectionable that no one can be surprised at the removal of the mills, which are situated so close to Donington Hall (Leics Journal 2 Jul 1875)

regards

Hello........

Hi Diddy...  :) maybe you will be able to help prove whether Mahala77 's  Gt X grandfather did indeed marry three times, I think we need proof of burial for Catherine Dixon between 1809 and 1813?

Marriage - Castle Donington - 5th June 1808 after Banns
GEORGE DIXON, of the parish & CATHERINE WOODCOCK, of the parish
~ ~ ~
Marriage - Castle Donington - 25th October 1813 after Banns
GEORGE DIXON, of the parish & HANNAH BARBER, of the parish
~ ~ ~

Unfortunately neither transcription gives the status at the time of marriage.

There is a baptism for a daughter Elizabeth at Castle Donington, 23rd May 1809 - parents George & Catherine Dixon
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JMJL-VQ7

This Elizabeth married at Castle Donington, the age on the transcription may not be accurate but from the census she appears on relates to 1809ish

Marriage Castle Donington - 17th February 1825 by License
William Oldershaw , OTP - Wid   21+, Joiner
Elizabeth Dixon,   OTP, Spin, 20+
With consent Of her father George Dixon
~ ~ ~

1841 = OLDERSHAW family -  HO107 piece 594 folio 24/28 page 17 - St Lukes Lane, Castle Donington

1851 = Elizabeth Oldershaw - HO107 piece 2142 folio 546 page 2 - 21, Full St, Derby

I see that George Dixon was also in Derby in 1851 - HO107 piece 2143 folio 109 page 19, Liveridge St, Derby
and Mary is back in Castle Donington by the 1861 census.

Burial at Castle Donington
ELIZABETH OLDERSHAW - 3rd April 1852, aged 42 - abode = Derby.

I seem to have missed this burial off....

Burial Castle Donington
HANNAH DIXON - 12th July 1833, aged 42 - abode Castle Donington

Thank you for your time spent on the Dixon information and the mill history.
It seems that George Dixon did marry 3 times.
The certificate for George Dixon's son Joseph Drake Dixon's marriage to Grace Kirkland in 1845 lists Elizabeth Oldershaw as a witness! Other witnesses were Richard Knight, Mary Ann Kirkland and 3 names that I can't decipher.
A burial for Catherine Dixon before 1813 would be great!

Hi, my name is Dave Dixon and I am related to the Dixons in Castle Donnington. I was given an original of the book about James Dixon, written by his son, when I visited my Nan in Donnington as a small boy in the 1960`s. The first chapter has a drawing of the original mill, which is now the Priest House Hotel. I also have the family bible, which has names going back over a few generations.
