Title: Corbett Family (The Salt King)
Post by: andrewp91 on Tuesday 01 May 12 17:00 BST (UK)
Hi. The family tail goes that myself and the family are dencendants of the Corbett family, which was known as the Salt King.

I am looking for Joseph Corbetts father.
Joseph Corbett was born; 1797 Worcestershire, England
Married Hannah Cole in 1817 Worcestershire, England
Died 23rd March 1867

He had children called
John Corbett - 1817 (He was known as THE SALT KING)
Mary Anne Corbett - 1819 (married Thomas Milward in 1837)
Joseph Corbett - 1822 (married Jane McDougall abt 1843)
William Corbett - 1824 (died in infancy)
Henry Corbett - 1826 (merchant, married and had 5 children)
David Corbett - 1830 (one child)
Thomas Corbett - 1833 (died unmarried in 1906 and was buried in the grave next to his elder brother, John)

I have tried looking for him but cannot find anything on him. I would be very greatful if someone can help me.

PS; Reason why i am looking for the fathers name is so that i can see if Joseph had any brothers or sisters which might have had a child called SAMUEL CORBETT (cousin to John Corbett - THE SALT KING). SAMUEL CORBETT was born abt 1831 Broadheath, Worcestershire, England. He married EMMA PREECE 1852 Sep Worcester, Worcestershire, England.
SAMUEL AND EMMA had a child called Felicia Annie Corbett in 25 Aug 1852 Hereford and Worcester, Worcestershire, England.

Kind Regards
Andrew

Are you descended from Samuel through his Daug Felicia?
If so the Marriage Cert to Emma would show his Fathers name and Occp.

I can find only 2 Samuels Christened c 1831 in Worcs;
16 October 1830, Cothridge, Worcester to SAMUEL/ANN
06 March 1831, St Helen, Worcester to JAMES/ELIZABETH

The Samuel, Son of James/Eliz is in St Helen in 1841.
Father James' age has been mistranscribed as 50 born c 1791.
In 1851 he is born c 1804, St Helens.
James Occp is impossible to read in 1841 but in 1851 he is a Tailor.
Samuel has left Home by then.
HO107/1209/9/St Helen
HO107/2042/764/44

The other Samuels Father Sanuel is born c 1806 and is an Ag Lab;
HO107/1199/3/St John Bedwardine

I see Emma/Felicia in 1861 together/no Samuel
##Was your Samuel a Tailor and previously Married 1850 to Elizabeth Bradley?

Trish :)

EDIT## Ignore the above bit;
The Samuel with Parents James/Elizabeth has a Sister Maria c 1838 in 1841 Census
And she is with him in 1861 and with his Wife Elizabeth in Middlesex.
So not yours.

Hi Wozzle. I'm not sure that it is the right person as he was born in 1797 accordig to his death on familysearch. It is a possablility of course and i will take a note of that on what you have found! I appericate you looking for me.

Hi Trish. I am a descended from Felicia. She married to a William Sedgwick. and they had child called William Sedgwick, who married a Rose Cooper who had Eric Sedgwick to married Alice Belk who had my nan Josephine Sedgwick. All sadley passed away.
I have ordered James and Emmas marriage certificate but cannot wait to find out lol. ment to come on the 22nd May. Was hoping that i could try and work it out before the marriage certificate comes. On feleicias birth certificate it states that Samuels occupation was Ostler. Which is Inn Keeper, Servant. I dont have any more information on Samuel other than this. I was hoping that he would appear in a census like 1841 was 10 years old from Broadheath, Worcestershire, England.

I appericate you both helping me look for this. Really appericate it.
Many kind returns
Andrew

So by a process of elimination I think this one is yours. POB/Address matches Census info.
It will hopefully be confirmed by the Marriage Cert.

1841 Census
Broadheath,
St Johns, Worcestershire
HO107/1199/3/St John Bedwardine
Samuel CORBETT, 35, Ag Lab
Ann, 30
John, 14
SAMUEL, 10
Harriett, 12
All born in County except Ann

1851 Census Samuel is born c 1801 Martley and Ann Leominster c 1821 Herefordshire.
The image is poor and Anns age is crossed through so more likely to be age 50+ than 30.
Everyone has left Home and they have a Daug Eliza age 7 (1844), born Broadheath.

Thank you very much for this information! I am very gratful for this.

I now need to know if samuel father (Samuel) is brothers with joseph. Do you think there is anyway to find out this, without buying both birth certificates?

I appericate the census that you have found as i could not find anything on him. I am really greatful!
Many Thanks
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
There were no Birth Certs for anyone born pre Sept 1837. The best you can hope for is a Parish Record of their Christenings to confirm same Parents.

I will have a scout around later.

The trouble is Family "legends" are incredibly unreliable.
Mine is that my Cummins line was related to the Cummins Engine Co in the USA.
Yes the person that started that Co. was from Ireland but through research totally from another area.
My Branch did have a Brother of my G/G/Grandfather go to the US at the same time my line went to New Zealand. But he was not the one that started the Co or any of his Descendants.

Trish :)

PS;
I presume you meant it is Samuel/Emmas Marriage Cert that you have ordered?

Hi Trish.
How would i get hold or see parish records please? I am glad that you know what you are going with parish records lol.

I am starting to feel like that with the salt king to be honest. Its looking glum at the moment. Only hope is to think that samuel is joseph's cousin.

Yeah sorry i mean the marriage to samuel and emma. to find samuels father.

Andrew :)

Hi. I have recently got the marriage certificate for Samuel and Emma and found out that Samuels father was called Samuel also. He was a labourer according to the marriage certificate.
Hope you can still help me with my quest :)
Are there any other options with Samuel having a father called Samuel also.
Many Regards
Andrew

Hello,
I am a descendant of Joseph Corbett and Hannah Cole. I can tell you from Newspapers written in 1901 and earlier, as well as various people bringing out books about JOHN CORBETT Salt King... that Joseph Corbett's father had a farm on the outskirts of Ludlow in Shropshire. Joseph moved to the Delph, Brierley Hill, around 1816 (in his late teens) and met Hannah Cole and married her soon after.
