In 1923 Jane and Florrie returned from their travels via New York heading for Leigh in Lancashire.
From then I have no idea what became of them.
Jane was the widow of Eldred Smith b 1879 son of Thomas Smith 1829 and Harriet (Calland) 1840 and Florrie was unmarried
They travelled with a friend Ernest J White b.1879 Leigh Lancs Who
lived at 37 Vernon St. Pennington in Leigh in 1911
If anyone could tell me what became of them after 1923 . I know that later they continued on their travels to Honolulu
Hoping someone can help me away from this Brick Wall

Thank you for your prompt reply
I don`t really know much about Mr White but on the ships manifest 1923 he was listed as Friend( in England) to Jane and Florrie .
Not sure if he actually travelled with them. His address was listed as 32 The Avenue. LEIGH Lancs
-
Colaine - have you approximate date & place of birth for them?
-
Jane Elizabeth Barrett 1886 Kidderminster Worcs
Married Eldred Smith 1912
Florence Barrett 1898 Halifax yorkshire
I have all information up to 1923
Thanks
-
You have the information ,yes ,but any one trying to help you does not,
so where do they start, without the basic information,
place and date of birth ,
for instance I was looking here
St Mary the Virgin Leigh
9th of March 1870
Eldred Smith
son of Thomas and Harriet
abode Pennington,
father a cotton manufacturor
so am I correct in assuming this is the Eldred you mentioned
-
Ernest James White was a cashier
so possibly a person Eldred trusted as he is mentioned in his probate record
-
Do you know if Ernest James White was married
Ernest James White to Jane Alice Daniels,St Marys Leigh,
1907,
ammended you have this from the census
-
Thanks for the details - from searching I see there was a previous thread that has Florence going to Canada in 1924
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,470949.20.html
With a name like Smith, there are numerous possibilities of re-marriage or death for Jane - you would need a lot of time & patience to work through them. Sorry!

Returning to England
April 1923
President Monroe
New York to London
Miss Florence Barrett ,single, aged 25,no occupation,of the 32 the Avenue Leigh
Mrs Jane E Smith ,housewife, aged 38, of 32 the Avenue Leigh
-
From your other thread ,you know Florrie Barrett returns to Canada on the Andania in 1924 ,
naming Mr White as her next of kin in England,
-
Just to Summarize (in my mind)
Jane and Florence were last recorded travelling to Canada in 1924
What became of them after that is anyones guess
I remember( as a child) that they visited us (from Honolulu) but we were not at home and left no contact address .
Thanks everyone for your help .Maybe one day the puzzle will be solved.
Thanks again

Hi All Thanks for your help on this subject
I am still working. Between 1919 and 1927 they travelled 14 times I have found and as far as I know settled in Honolulu.
My latest findings are that both ladies sailed from Liverpool to Colon (Cuba) July 1927on the `ORDUNA`
Also they applied for citizenship and Naturalization both lived in USA at the time
This record was on Ancestry but I dont have membership. Maybe someone would be kind enough to confirm this for me.
Thanks again

Hi All
Still looking for info on Jane E Smith and Florence Barrett (sisters)
JANE E ( Born Barrett) 1884 Kidderminster
Married Eldred Smith in 1912 (he was born 1879 Leigh Lancs and died 1914 Fylde)
FLORENCE (Flo) born 1898 Halifax
After the death of Eldred the two sisters travelled extensively finally settling (I think) in Hawaii
I have lots of info on their sailings 1919-1927 but have now drawn a blank.
Please look at my previous posts if you think you can help.

Hi colaine
It helps us if you can include the url of your previous topics such as this

If you don't have the information already, it might be helpful to get an exact birth date for them. If they subsequently remarried, it may be easier to find them with a birth date.

Perhaps you could work out which births are Florence & Jane on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/. At least narrowing their birth to a 3-month time frame might help.
-
Jane Elizabeth Barrett 1884
Kidderminster 2nd Qtr, 6c 259.
Florence Barrett 1897
Halifax 4th Qtr, 9a 400
Both found Free BDM
However there is another one NOT on Free BMD
Flora Barrett 1897 2nd Qtr
Halifax 9a 447.
Is it feasible that Jane Elizabeth is in fact Florence mother.Stranger things do happen.

Have searched extensively for Jane Elizabeth and Florence after 1927,last positive sailing on the Orduna July 27th Liv to Colon Cuba.[Family Search]

Hi Brionne
Thank you for your interest in my family.
In the 1911 census Sarah an Barrett (my g grandmother) had a boarding house in Blackpool.
Jane E and Florence (Florrie) lived there together with Eldred Smith.
Jane married Eldred in 1912 and he died in 1914.I have a copy of his will and her left his money to his widow (Jane) and a mr Ernest J White ( cashier),
After the death of Eldred the two sisters ( and occasionally mr White)went travelling, mainly too and from Hawaii.
Between1919and 1927 I have 15 ships manifests with their names on.
I also have an 'alien cert'dept of labor for Jane when she arrived in Honolulu in 1922 on the 'sonomo' fromSydney.
My family have told me that one of the sisters married a military man but I can't find any proof. They came to visit us in the early 1940's but we missed them. An auntie told me. They came from Honolulu and looked very affluent.
Thanks again for your interest
-
Thanks for mentioning the 1911 info.
Its certainly tricky trying to nail these two women down.
Notice an Australian marriage for a Florance 1939.
Possible that either or stayed in the United States, due to their continued visits to Honolulu.
Hopefully not killed at Pearl Harbour, some civilians were. Brionne.
-
Have you checked their parents and siblings death notices? As they were affluent they may have put in quite detailed death notices including their full name and location.
regards
Ros
-
There is a list of civilian casualties at Pearl Harbor here - https://www.nps.gov/valr/learn/historyculture/civilian-casualties.htm No matches there.
-
Hi Shelly
Thanks for your help but I know that the sisters visited England around 1948
So the couldn't have perished in 'Pearl Harbour'
Thanks again for your help.

Hi All
I would like to update you of my findings re the above sisters.
I have now found that Florence married Isaiah McKenzie (police Officer)who was born in Chesterville Ontario Canada in 1905. He lived most of his life in Michigan and they were married in Panama Canal Zone in 1930. He died in Christobel Colon Panama in 1962.
Florence died 1971 Trenton Wayne Michigan .Before she married she travelled (with her sister Jane E Smith) .I have a total of 20 plus voyages they made together.
Hope this is of interest .

Great to have an update - Perhaps it would have been better to post on the orignal threads and then the people who helped you would be more likely to see it.
These seem to be the original threads appertaining to Jane E Barrett Smith and Florence Barrett :-

Hi Colaine,
A couple pieces of the information seem to be off a little bit.
Isaiah's last name appears to be "Mackenzie"
In 1937 & 1941 their address is listed as Colon, Panama
1937 Passenger list: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24KK-RRG
1941 Passenger list: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24LX-5Q2
In 1947 their address is listed as Monroe, Michigan
1947 Passenger list: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:245G-M4H
Isaiah died 16 Jul 1967 in Toledo, Ohio and where he was buried
Death Record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VKLG-KPV
Florence died 02 Oct 1971 in Trenton, Michigan and her death record has place of burial as Toledo, Ohio. I assume she was buried with Isaiah
