Title: 19 Field Street, Birkenhead
Post by: clingov1 on Thursday 10 May 12 20:51 BST (UK)
Does anyone know where Field Street Birkenhead might have been in 1911?

My great grand parents John and Edith Toner are listed on the census as living here with their 5 children in 1911, however also listed as living here were a Mr and Mrs Haggerty/Heggarty together with their son.

I would like to know if this was a 'court type dwelling' or did they just share the house?

Was it really near any fields?

Would there be any old maps of the area in existence?

Thx

doubt if Field Street was near any fields. I think is was between Birkenhead Park and Conway Street, that neck of the woods, a busy part of the town. A relative living in Birkenhead is looking into it.

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html?coords=331260,389335 and it will centre the map on Field Street which you can see on the 1911 1:2,500 map to the north of Birkenhead Borough Hospital.

I think it was a Tenement Building.
There is another family also living at No 19
If you go forward a few pages from No 19 to No 21 it does have "tenement" written on the form.

You can see Field Street on the aerial photo http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/eaw001793 between the hospital and Livingstone Street Baths. Sign in/register to zoom into image.
