Title: Williamina Matheson of Dalchalm, Brora, Sutherland
Post by: murton on Tuesday 15 May 12 14:58 BST (UK)
I am researching specific details of the above lady whose parents were Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Matheson of the same address.

Williamina served as a Worker in the Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps and died on 5th February 1920 aged 20 years.. She is buried in Clyne New Burial Ground, also known as Brora Cemetery, Clyne in Grave number E.630. I would be most grateful for a photograph of her grave if possible. Would PM my email add. if required.

Williamina also had two brothers – Alexander, Royal Engineers and Thomas, Cameron Highlanders who were both killed in the war of whom I have sufficient details for her profile.

She also had a brother-in-law who also died in the war but I am unable to identify his surname to obtain details of his service, etc. would be grateful if anybody can assist with this name.

Williamina and her two brothers are commemorated on the Clyne War Memorial, Brora that was unveiled by her mother on 25th December 1922. There is the possibility that her brother-in-law is also commemorated on the same memorial ‘If only I knew his name’.

Will be most grateful if anybody can assist.

Hi,

You may be able to obtain a photograph from the War Graves Photographic Project -

Thank you for your interest. I am aware of the TWGPP but as my project which is purely personal and non-commercial one has to watch ones pocket, especcially when looking after some 4,000 unfortunate ladies.

The grave will come eventually but I am more interested at the moment in identifying Williamina's un-named brother-in-law.

Regards,

Tony

Have you looked at the Ambaile site? It might throw something up.

I have a photo of the Matheson headstone in Clyne cemetery with Williamina's name on, date of death 5 Feb 1920 aged 29 years. Also on the headstone are her brothers: Pte Thomas Matheson died in France 3 May 1917 aged 20 years and Spr Alexander Matheson died of wounds in France 3 Aug 1917 aged 22 years.  It's some time since you posted so maybe you have the photo already.

Hi Tony

Just some ideas to try and establish name and details of son in law to Thomas and Elsie Matheson.

Is this info correct in respect of children's names for Thomas and Elsie www.garycolquhoun.com.au/judaft/genealogy/bridger_daft/aqwg191.htm

If so, three possible daughters, any one of which may be the one your are looking for further details on regarding the marriage. The other daughters too young for a marriage around WW1:

Margaret MATHESON b.c. 1884
Isabella MATHESON* b. c. 1886
Elspeth MATHESON b. 1892

* if you click on her link, you can see she looks to have married first a DALTON and then a ROSS (no first names included).

Fits with the family's 1901 entry:

Thomas Matheson 44, Plasterer Contractor
Elsie Matheson 37
Margaret Matheson 16
Isabella Matheson 14
Williamina Matheson 10
Elsie Matheson 8
Alexander Matheson 5
Thomas Matheson 4
John Matheson 2
Charles Matheson 46

Address: Gartymore, Kildonan

From online material, someone has Margaret Matheson marrying a Charles Malcolm in March 1906 in Edinburgh.

Again from online material (family tree on a/try):

William Dalton served as a regular soldier for 12 years with the Kings Own Scottish Borderers in Britain before emigrating to Australia at the age of 30. The information on the Roll of Honour states that he served with the 22nd Battalion No 5963 Sergeant William Dalton, Coburg, Melbourne, Victoria. He was Killed in Action on 3rd October 1917 at Ypres.  His next of kin is given as his wife, Isabella Dalton (Matheson), Dalchalm, Brora, Sutherland, Scotland.

William Dalton born c.1883 Tockwith, Yorkshire married Isabella Matheson in 1909 in Edinburgh.

Second marriage date not included but Isabella Matheson went on to marry a Walter Alexander Ross (b.1892 in Evanton, Parish of Kiltearn, Ross-shire).

Possible 1891 entry for William Dalton in Tadcaster, Yorkshire (the Scottish marriage cert will let you properly confirm his parents' names if you need this):

John Dalton 35, brewery labourer
Jane Simpson Dalton 34
George E Dalton 12
Amos Dalton 11
William Dalton 8 b. Tockwith, Yorkshire
John Dalton 6
Jane Dalton 4

RG12/3881/30/2

Added: As you thought Tony:

... There is the possibility that her brother-in-law is also commemorated on the same memorial ‘If only I knew his name’.

You're a Star! That is definitely him, I was not expecting him to have been a Colonial but there you go.

I had moved on to other research but will now have to go back and change Williamina's profile.

My regards.
