Title: Which Charles Bunday/Bundy 1842?
Post by: rjb1984 on Monday 21 May 12 17:53 BST (UK)
Hi,

I've just hit a snag with my family linneage.

I've just discovered that a great x? grandfather was a Charles Bunday born about 1842 in Woodgreen, Hampshire.

Census records give his name as Charles Bunday, marriage certificate as Bundee but his death certificate gives Bundy (i've just ordered this...)

A search on findmypast doesn't give any matches for Charles Bunday about 1842 but several about Bundy's about 1842.

Which do I order first? Is there anyway to work out which would be my ancestor? The marriage certificate gives his fathers name as James Bundee.

Thanks

Rich

Hi,

Unfortunately the age is simply "Full age" and the occupation is shown as 'Labourer'.

I would imagine that he was a farmer / worked on a farm. His son and grandson did!

Rich

Edit - The marriage was in Whitsbury 1866. The witnesses were George Robert and George Stagg.

Charles and Sarah Bunday then lived in Fordingbridge from what I can work out.

So i've now got the birth, marriage and death certificate which I believe is for Charles Bunday.

Death - 1925 Charles Bundy - 83 years old. Farm Labourer. Died in Whitsbury. Informant. Son, W Bundy (From my records he had a son called William) There was another possible death in 1926 but I don't have this record.

Marriage - 1866 Charles Bundee. Full age. Wood Green. Interestingly, lists fathers name as James Bundee.

Birth - 5th March 1843. Charles (no surname given in name of child). Wood Green. Father James Holly. Mother Hannah Bundy.

I've looked at the census and now i'm just confused!

I couldn't find a match for Charles and his parents living together in 1851 or 61. So I took a look at James Holly. I found a hit from 1851 and 61. James Holly, Hannah Holly and Charles. Born Woodgreen in 1843.

Is this common? Why would the birth index show Charles Bundy when fathers surname was Holly? Why would his fathers name then be listed at James Bundee on the marriage certificate?!

Thanks,

Rich

He was obviously illeg as James/Hannah did not Marry til 1844.
Reg, Dec 1844, Fordingbridge, 8 279
You are lucky that James Holly was named as his Father on the Birth Cert.

In my opinion he may have gone back to his Mothers maiden name post 1861 Census and Married under that name. For the reason of not embarrassing himself he named a James Bundee as his Father on his M/C.

Interestingly, i've just found his birth certificate as Charles Holly. The details are exactly the same. Same page and volume number.

I'm glad that James Holly accepted that Charles was his son, otherwise i'd be hitting a dead end. I've hit enough of those already.

It's surprising just how many children were 'illigitimate'

Thanks,

Rich

Title: Bunday/Bundy Hampshire, More help needed!
Post by: rjb1984 on Tuesday 23 October 12 21:08 BST (UK)
Continuing along my Bunday line i've moved past Charles Bunday.

Charles mother was Hannah Bunday, born about 1820 in Wood Green Hampshire. Christened in Hale, Hampshire.

Her father was James Bunday, mother shown as Rachel. The only marriage record I could find was between a James Bendey and Rachel Downer in Hale, 1808.

The 1851 census shows James and Rachel living in Woodgreen. The surname being Bunday. This census shows that he was born in Fordingbridge in 1787. (This record appears to show the name Jas and I think has been wrongly transcribed as Jon)

I have been unable to find any baptism records for him, or any which would help me take it back further. I've widened my search and found the only one possible -

James Bundy, baptised 1786 in Downton, Wiltshire.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice as i'm stumped now!

Thanks,

Rich

also wondering if the following has any connection, I must admit I have not followed it up and the name is slightly different but the following shows that someone of the surname bound lived in Woodgreen
1805B/05
Will and administration of Richard Bound of Woodgreen, Fordingbridge, Hampshire, labourer
1805

Hi Deb,

I've had no further luck. I thought I might have had a possible father, a George Bundy, but I don't think it's correct.

I'm sure that they tie into the Downton Bundy's which have a long line already well researched on Ancestry.

It doesn't hurt to take a look at the Will if you can, any possibility is worth looking at. I'm especially interested in following this line of my ancestry due to the surname. I'm a Bundy also.

Would you mind PM'ing me further information about where you tie in the James Bundy / Rachel Downer?

Best,

Rich

Hi rich
I am a descendant of James Bundy and Rachel Downer's son Peter who lived in Woodgreen.
The marriage certificate shows Peter Bundy aged 28 , labourer, bachelor of Woodgreen son of James Bundy , labourer to Harriet Jane Clark aged 20, spinster of Godshill, daughter of William Clark ,labourer. The witnesses to the event were Jonas Downer and Harriet Bundy. Both bride and groom made their mark.(Jonas Downer lived in the local area and appears on the census')

Deb,

I see. I've got Peter Bunday b1826. The spelling has been Bundy up till about 1870, my Great Great Grandfather was a Bunday and the family story is that his wife didn't like the 'a' so it was dropped when they married. Odd.

There have been Bundy's going back a long time and I guess i'll never know.

I traced my line through to Hannah Bunday, b1820 who married a James Holly. Her parents were James Bundy b1787 (roughly!) and Rachel Downer b1790. Married in Hale, Hampshire in 1808. He was born in Fordingbridge and she was born in Woodgreen.

I haven't been able to find any birth or christening records. One possible but that was in Downton if memory serves correct...

I use Ancestry as I like the lay out. Are you a member on there?

Hi Rich
Not a member on ancestry at present but will probably join when my subscription for findmypast runs out. I have been using findmypast because of their excellent access to british army records.
I do have a tree on worldconnect - it does not contain any of my notes but shows people in my tree.

Hi Deb,

I've used Findmypast, I much prefer their search engine and layout over Ancestry but the Ancestry family tree layout is easier to use and I like the 'hints' that pop up! It's the small things in life eh!?

Any notes you might have and are willing to share would be very kind.

I wish I could help with your research but i've only recently discovered James Bundy, Rachel Downer and their children.

Hi - Sorry to drag up an old thread.

I've just started further research with where I left off and have revisited the Bunday/Bundy line.

Deb, I've firmed up James Bunday/Bundy and Rachel Downer. They are definitely the parents of Hannah.

From looking at clues -

1851 census shows birth in 1787.
Marriage in 1808 is between James Bendey and Rachel Downer. I've done a search for a James Bendey. He doesn't exist. I'm swaying towards this being a transcription error.

Interestingly - I've found a christening for a James Bundy in Downton, Wilts in 1786. Father shown as a George Bundy. I couldn't find anything for James Bundy/Bunday born in Fordingbridge around 1787.

Furthermore, a search for a christening shows a George Bendy in Wiltshire 1769.

I'm stretching here I think. I'd be grateful for some suggestions?

Rich
