One of my forefathers had a clothier shop/business in Cateaton Street, (now Gresham Street), London, in 1817. Does anyone have access to a street directory for this period? His name was George Randall, although he may just have been a partner. Any help much appreciated.

Hi,
The 1808 London Post office Directory has a George & William Randall, clothier, Lothbury.
See link fro Lothbury

Hi Sharon,
Many thanks for that, must be the same person, probably working with brother William. Thanks again. Tony Randall

1825 Pigot's Directory has "Randall, Wm. 2 Charlotte St, Pimlico" under "Tailors etc." also tailors A.F. and John Randall, but no sign of a George unless he was by then a cabinet maker or feather maker.

Thanks also Jenifer and Chris, just the information I wanted. As a matter of interest, George was apparently born in Wilton, Wiltshire, married 1802, Salisbury, had his first child 1817, again in Salisbury, but alongside the birth entry was this mysterious note 'Clothier, Ch. Passage, Cateaton St.' unusual because no other entries had notes referring to the occupation & address of parents. Thanks again.

Hello There,
One of my 5x Great Grandad's William Spooner lived in Cateaton Street, in 1811. This is according to his Marriage Licence Certificate, dated the 26th of December 1811. He married Catherine Hodgkin, on that date, in Edenham, Lincolnshire.
Can anyone please find him in a London Directory, for this time/ around these dates? It would be much appreciated, thank you.
I don't know his occupation at that time. But I do know that he became a Linen Draper, when his first child, Frederick was born in 1814. I think his address, in 1814, was Henry Street, Pentonville.
By 1817/1818, he had moved to Chiswell Street. This is only half a mile away from Cateaton Street.
Any information would be gratefully accepted.
Thank you very much. :) ;)

Re William Spooner, there is a man of that name in an 1811 London Directory, proprietor of a "Manchester" warehouse at 23 Lawrence Lane, Cheapside. "Manchester" was (and still is in Australia) a generic term for household linen and cotton goods.

Thanks very much for that. I'd never heard the term "Manchester" relating to household linen, and cotton goods. I think Cheapside was right near Cateaton street, wasn't it?
Cheers. :) ;)

Thank you very much indeed. I think there is a good chance this may be my William: The earliest reference I can find to him being a Linen Draper in Chiswell Street, is via the: "Old Bailey Online Proceedings" dated the 29th of May 1816. This was when Thomas Bruce was indicted for stealing four handkerchiefs from him. I know what a Warehouseman is but what is a: "Factor" please?
He was put down as that in the 1816 bankruptcy proceeding.
Thank you. :) ;)

If you google "old occupations" you can check out "factor" at different sites or google "factor wikipedia"

Hello There,
I wander if you could possibly tell me please what website this is from/ post a link to it?
Or is it only viewable on Find My Past or Ancestry, where you have to pay a subscription to view it?
Thanks. :) ;)

It's in Holden's London and Country Directory 1811, volume 1, which I don't think is available online other than through a subscription site. It is also available to purchase on CD.
Incidentally I have just noticed a Wm Spooner, 18 Henry Street, Pentonville in the private residents directory of the same volume.

So there is one section for private residents, and one for business addresses?
When his Son, F W Spooner was born in 1814, he was down as being born at Henry Street, Pentonville.
Does this mean that both William Spooner's might not be the same person? Or is there still a chance that they could? ::)

But then again I suppose if William Spooner was the Proprietor of that business, he would automatically be put down as the owner of that business at the address in the 1811 Directory.
And it would make sense that he would have a different residential address and not have been living in his own Warehouse. :) ;)

So there is one section for private residents, and one for business addresses?
Yes that's correct. It could quite possibly be the same person.

Is there also an 1809 and 1810 Holden's Directory of London?
Thanks. :)

I have also found a clothier in Cateaton Street: Wood and Downing. Can anyone help with more information, please? Was the Wood named Richard Wood, and did the Downing have any connection with a clothier in Melksham, Wilts at around the same time?
