I've recently found that it is only my immediate family who moved to Invershin, Sutherland (working on the railways). The family came from Maryburgh Ross and Cromarty. But there are so many MacLennans in Maryburgh. Are they all related? How long have they been there? the numbers have overwhelmed me. has anyone been researching them? thanks, Kait

It can seem overwhelming can't it when you are faced with so many similar names :-\
It might help people if you described the family that you are looking for, names and dates, occupations etc. All that you can add that is relevant to identify them will help people here to either connect with them or to help you with searches :)

Thanks! Things I know:
My father used to take me to the grave of his grandfather. The stone says
Donald MacLennan station master Invershin Died 7th Feby 1907 aged 54 years
I worked out from this he was born about 1853/4 and traced him back on the censuses from 1881 to 1901
I also found his marriage certificate for 1875. The later censuses showed he was born in Maryburgh so I then searched earlier ones there and found him with his mother Mary Mclennan b abt 1829 and his grandparents - Kenneth McLennan b abt 1797 and Christins b abt 1798.
I am interested to find if any of the many McLennans are siblings of Kenneth

A good place to start to gather info on Kenneth and wife Christina (you will fiind as a variant Christie/y and Christian for example) to help you work back would be Kenneth and Christina's death certs. Given they show in 1861 (and post 1855 and the start official registration) their death certs should hopefully include their parents' names. Have you checked these yet?

Just found an online tree which can help and let you verify things from it.
From that 1841 census, we were missing one first (?) born son (post that 1820 marriage). Early born names for children can often help in giving clues for paternal and maternal grandparents. A son George looks to have been born in 1822, died 1886.
Kenneth McLennan's death is looking to have been on 6 Sep 1876 in Maryburgh - parents showing as George McLennan and Jean Chisholm or Margaret McKenzie (looks like some issue in confirming this?). Birth on 5 Jun 1797. Hopefully his death entry may help with parents' names.
Christina McRae b. 1 Jun 1798 in Millnain and died on 5 Nov 1875 in Maryburgh. No mother's name included but father is down as Duncan McRae. These might be her siblings, newer LDS database (I have shrunk the link) www.rootschat.com/links/0mv0/ I think this may be Christina's entry along with sibings...all to confirm though.

Kait, with all this info, these are things that you can confirm via SP and official records for your benefit. Member trees are great, but can be wrong and you always need to take steps to confirm for yourself.

Wow! Thank you. Quite a bit to go on. I haven't found Donald's birth, pretty sure he was illegitimate. A tree on Genes Reunited shows his father as Alexander Fraser and he is down as Donald Fraser on 1861 but there after as McLennan. His marriage certificate gives his father as Alexander McLennan and mother as Mary McLennan ms Mclennan ;)
Jane, the sister visiting with mother Mary appears to be illegitimate too.
It all adds to the interest!

oh and yes, those are the census records I've been working from.
I have Christina MacRae's mother down as Mary MacKenzie, but rather foolishly I haven't noted where I got that from, probably someone else' tree.

Hi Kait,
I am descended from Mary's brother George, born 1822 in Dingwall. I have Mary having a child. Donald, by Alexander Fraser, but no marriage. There was another child, Jane, I'm not sure (can't remember and didn't note it) if it was the same father. This information I got from Donald McLennan (aka Donnie Dingwall, an expert on the McLennans who sadly passed away in 2004).
He was descended from Mary.

Re' preponderance of MacLennans in mid Ross, they had been cleared from Strathconnon, about 500 people in all, between 1840 & 1848, by the Balfour's (of prime minister fame) factor, the notorious Mr Rose, a Dingwall lawyer. There are a few MacLennan websites which might have something.
